Federal fisheries officials are taking additional steps to protect sandbar sharks.
A new rule would ban the recreational harvest of sandbar sharks - recognizable by their long pectoral fins - and limit commercial harvest to vessels participating in a research program. The rule also would add protections for porbeagle sharks, a northern species found in the waters around Canada.
Commercial fishing led to overfishing of sandbar sharks, whose large fins are sold in the lucrative shark fin soup market. Recreational anglers participating in kill shark tournaments also have contributed to declines in coastal shark populations, NOAA Fisheries Service said.
The harvest of dusky sharks has been prohibited since 2000, but they are taken incidentally by commercial fishermen targeting valuable sandbar sharks, which are classified as overfished.
"We must take strong measures to stop overfishing and allow these species to rebuild," said William Hogarth, director of NOAA Fisheries. "Even with these measures, it will take a long time to rebuild the population of these sharks."
Unlike many species of fish, sharks are slow to reproduce. Sandbar sharks take 15 to 19 years to reach sexual maturity and give birth to about eight pups every other year, said John Carlson, a NOAA Fisheries biologist in Panama City.
The loss of sharks and other top predators can knock ocean ecosystems out of balance, Carlson said, though scientists still are studying the effects of their dwindling numbers.
Florida has more commercial shark fishermen than any other state, with 141 holders of permits for shark fishing and 144 permits for the incidental harvest of sharks while targeting other fish.
As proposed, the shark rule would allow five to 10 boats to land sandbar sharks for research. The rule also would close eight areas to shark fishing and require that fins remain attached to any shark that is commercially landed to guard against finning.
Florida already prohibits the harvest of several sharks and rays, including sawfish, basking sharks, whale sharks, white sharks, sand tiger sharks, bigeye sand tiger sharks, Atlantic angel sharks, bigeye sixgill sharks, bigeye thresher sharks, bignose sharks, Galapagos sharks, longfin mako sharks, narrowtooth sharks, night sharks, sevengill sharks, sixgill sharks, smalltail sharks, spiny dogfish, manta rays and spotted eagle rays.
A public hearing on the proposed federal shark rule is scheduled for 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 23 at the public library, 101 Melody Lane in Fort Pierce. For details, go online to www.nmfs.noaa.gov.
