    The Scripts of Hârn
Several scrips are used on the island of Hârn today. Other scripts, while not in active use today, are sometimes met, either in ancient documents or in forreign writings. This page details some of these scripts.

Lakise by far the most used script on Hârn as of 720 TR. It is strongly associated with the languages of the Jarind family. On Hârn it is used for writing Hârnic and Jarinese, the two most used languages. Orbaalese is also often written in Lakise, though it is more common to use Runic. Lakise is also used extensively on the mainland in the areas nearest Hârn.

Here is the chart from Hârnlore 9.

A Lakise font is available from Columbia Games' site.

Runic is strongly associated with the languages of the Pharic family, particularly Ivinian. On Hârn it is used for both Ivinian and Orbaalese.

Two different Runic alphabets have been published. This is from the Ivinia Index:

It is simply one of the versions of the 16 character Futhark, also known as the younger rune alphabet, used in real world Scandinavia in the late Viking age and very early middle age.

Another alphabet is used on the player's map in Curse of Hlen. No key is given, but the same names are given in Latin letters on the GM map, so it is quite easy to construct a key.

The map is entirely in English. For example, while we know that Harbaalese for kingdom is "Tanalaar", and Harbaal is a "Vatanalaar", both maps read "The Kingdom of Harbaal".

No Q occurs on the GM map. C occurs only in the digraph CH, which corresponds to KH on the player's map. KS in runes is rendered X on the GM map. The letter Y us used both as a consonant (Yelaben) and as a vowel (Xeradyn). The same rune is used for both. The English digraph Th, wich was one character in the real world rune alphabets, does not occur. The digraph Sh does occur (Sharl), and is written SH in runes.

I think it is safe to conclude that the key above is complete. By an amazing coincidence Ivinian uses that same digraphs as English. The thorn sound is written with two characters, TH, just as in Engish.

    Selenian
The Selenian script is used by the Sindarin. No example of Selenian has been published by Columbia Games. Even so, we know with great certainty what it looks like. The Sindarin come from Midgaad, which is best described by Tolkien. Practically every name on the Elshavel and Ulfshafen maps are Quenya, the language of Tolkien's high elves. Thus there is little doubt that Selenian is the Tengwar of Feanor.

The link above leads to just one of many, many sites on the web where you can find the Tengwar described. A great number of Tengwar fonts have been made, and many of them are available on the WWW. There are also many pages on the Elfin languages out there. Try for example Ardalambion.

Of the scripts never used by any Hârnian culture, Ayaran is by far the one most often encountered. It is strongly associated with languages of the Azeri family, particularly Azeryani. No clue to the nature of this script is known to me. Even so, my take on it is available on a seperate page.

    Khruni
This was the alphabet of the Khuzdul, and the precursor to Runic. No example is given, but it is reasonable to presume that it is a descendant of the certhar of Daeron, probably through the Angerthas Moria, since the Khuzdul like the Sindarin came from Midgaad.

Note "was" above. Khruni is no longer used. What led the dwarves to give up their own alphabet and adopt the Ivinians' altered version of it is a mystery.

    Nuvesarl
This script is almost a complete mystery. It is used in old document in those regions where Lakise is used today, except Quarpor/Shorkyne. This could indicate that it is a predecessor of Lakise.

The curious Lakise vowels may be a clue to Nuvesarl. Some scripts have only consonant letters, and ignore vowels altogether. Nuvesarl may have been an intermediate form, specifying the positions of vowels, but not distinguishing between them. Lakise's vowels could be Nuvesarl's all purpose vowel character with marks added to specify which vowel is intended.

Otherwise I have no clue to what Nuvesarl may have looked like.
