#8 EASTCOAST (DARWIN TO BRISBANE ET RETOUR)
Shalom, Aloha and (one last time) G'day! you freakish little travelreport-fanatics from all over the globe XD

Here we go - one more time Aussie news from my time Down Under between June and early August:
I've already uploaded several picture-galleries showing Donnie and, later on, merely me while travelling up the west coast from Carnarvon to Darwin with major stops in
Coral Bay/Exmouth and the Ningaloo Reef
    (http://www.iphpbb.com/board/ftopic-52075169nx54173-142.html)
    Karijini National Park
    (http://www.iphpbb.com/board/ftopic-52075169nx54173-143.html)
    Broome and the Kimberleys
    (http://www.iphpbb.com/board/ftopic-52075169nx54173-145.html)
    and Kakadu National Park
    (http://www.iphpbb.com/board/ftopic-52075169nx54173-146.html.

Donnie and me decided to split up at about Winter Solstice - he rather decided to accumulate money in Kununurra, the last town in WA before the boarder to Northern Territory. I kept the beloved car (that eventually seemed to be reliable by then) and drove on to Darwin, the territory's capital (named by - ha?) together with Pierre and Mizi from Korea. In between, though, we visited the famous Kakadu National Park.
Five days sightseeing followed; time enough to find new people to accompany my trip to the east coast: two Germans (Hannes from Rostock who strongly reminded me of you, Manuel - plus Christian from Goettingen) and Emily from Lester/England. The trip was fun, nobody finished one sentence in German and the the car remained one piece, not one problem (besides some road trains which almost smashed our windscreen due to flying debris on the highway. Ah, and the crack kept growing, of course).
After one week driving we made it to Townsville (the so-called capital of Northern Queensland - very impressing, right? With 150,000 people the state's secondlargest settlement, btw). I used to like that place for I spend way too much time there - including my birthday in early July.

Ah, yes, and then I ran out of money and, instead of driving north towards Cairns and banana plantations, I found myself on the way south to a place called Porcupine (this is how we called it, you'll find it on the map under "Proserpine" - but why should you have a look?). Farmwork again: tomato-picking. Those mean people in the "working hostel" promised us work every day and a bonus: one additional paid week after four. Well, of course there was a catch to it and we happily left after fourteen days (and actually only seven half days work). By now I get to know new beautiful people (having had a great time there at all): Doyle from India, Ted from Egypt, both students in NSW; more English dudes: Ben and Jack, one Canadian: Jamie. I was going to spend some more time with. One wild party night in Airlie Beach (the gate to the famous Whitsunday Islands) and up north again for a weekend-trip to Magnetic Island near Townsville.

And then again time to say good-bye. And now to Cairns! It didn't take long to find somebody new: Adrian, an elderly dutch Hippie (a term that probably comes closest); Christina, a Bavarian girl without accent; Elisabeth from francophone Belgium. The car broke down on our first night - so we got stuck in a late rainy night on a banana plantation (where there was no work available allegedly!) and later on in famous Mission Beach (after the farmer jumpstarted us) - not exactly the worst place to be with a broken car.
What followed was something between nervous waiting for a spare part and forced perception to be in paradise (that phrase is just way too sucked out: floskel! - but it's true nevertheless, har!). And then... before we actually realized it we were on the road again - after spending another $120 for a new starter motor. Well, still better than paying for accomodation and being dependent on public transfer or, even worse: on other backpackers. XD

Cairns was an enchanting place to hang around for some days, despite those masses of tourists. On the other hand: after all those weeks in more or less remote WA I haven't exactly had a problem with a couple of more people to do things with. We soon travelled on: north to Cape Tribulation (and even a bit further! - a tiny rainforest-creek: pseudo-romantic campfire versus progressive trance party). Three days of swimming, snorkelling, hiking have been enough, though, and we found ourselves back in Cairns where it was once again time to say goodbye - and hello... we spent the last night together in the local casino, tried our luck once again with roulette - and won $20 what has been invested in fruit juice, ice coffee and two gigantic portions of french fries the next morning.

The last people accompanying FUCKUP's last voyage (back down into Townsville were I planned to sell it to two Dutch girls) were the following: two girls from Frankfurt and Hongkong and an English lad called Antony - the latter a true hit for we not only shared the passion for photography and choc biscuits but anyway had a phenomenal, even if quite short, time together. The plan, however, was to visit the highly praised Atherton Tablelands southwest/inland of Cairns, before finally driving south. Well, it's not always as easy as it is supposed to be - and it would have been almost boring if the car wouldn't have broken down again... a mere three days before selling it. And so it happened: on the long, hilly "highway" between Gordonvale and Atherton, shortly after a lookout-stop, the engine decided to show us the metallic mittle finger... apart from that I really felt pity for the other three I wasn't exactly annoyed, not even surprised, it seemed I didn't even care. I didn't ask myself: how the hell would I get to see all those beautiful waterfalls? I was almost aware we would get outta that even now - and we seriously did (after three hours idle waiting): jumpstarting is the magic word!
The rest of the trip was simply amazing... besides being hypersensitive about every time we switched the engine off (for you never know if it's going to start again!) Antony and I enjoyed it a lot: the LotR-landscape, the falls and, most significant of all, we've seen real platypuses - in the wild! XD - after all... and my heart was jumping!~

Surprisingly (with non-stop-running engine) we made it in time to Townsville and I could sell the car - did I mention yet that the driver's window vaporized one day before? Half a year after we somehow broke it (not being able anymore to actually close it while driving) it now fell in a thousand pieces - there we go again: too much tension is just no good. Ah, yes, I could STILL sell it (don't ask me how I did this +laugh+).
Next day I took the bus down south to Brisbane where I was spending another two nights before eventually flying to Darwin - I was basically trying to find a proper jazz club (bad luck in the middle of the week) and ended up with asking myself: why - another - big - Australian - city. However, Art gallery and Botanical gardens were worth it. Oh, and by the way, please make your way into the movies, everybody and watch Homer singing his spiderpig-tune. It's worth it! :D

    Ah yes, and then Darwin.
Well, you know, while reflecting all these last days of Aussie-land I'm in fact already busy island-hopping in Indonesia - two whole weeks! (Mhmm.. almost home) - I nevertheless remember that I didn't exactly enjoy my last night down under: I lost my last cash while playing roulette and when I was back in town I felt too narcotized and sleepdrunken to enjoy the atmosphere. Never mind! Donnie and I were together again, spending the last sunset together on Darwin's unfamous beaches - getting drugged, catching the last sunbeams on video. Then we almost missed the airport-bus before we realised how the circle was closing. At least I didn't exactly feel pity for leaving - simply because I couldn't wait to see Bali and surroundings! (And this is what I still claim now after an interesting motorcycle-ride through Lombok's capital Mataram to the next bank-office for my credit-card was swallowed by an evil ATM in town. Hell yeah.)

That's it for now - I'm done and you shall enjoy (yet) uncommented picture-galleries!
