Aufstellung: Bywater - Newton, Powell, Mackay, Mullins - Noble, Lomas, Fletcher, Etherington - Zamora, Harewood

    45. Chadwick für Fletcher, 62. Sheringham für Zamora, 87. Elliot Ward für Mullins

    Tabellle:

    1 Wigan 37 72
    2 Sunderland 37 72

    WEST HAM UNITED 1 READING 3 - KUMB.com
    by Gordon Thrower
    Saturday, 12th March 2005

Wins and defeats seem to be like buses these days. They come in threes.

So we ventured west to London Irish’s ground which the bewigged one modestly
allowed his yes men to name after him, This followed a session in the “Three
Guineas” pub by the station where, amongst the collection of rugby shirts of
the world was a tasteful number in pink and blue which, on closer
inspection, turned out to be a Scotland away kit. Whether or not one would
have gained access to the lego stadium wearing such a number I have no idea
but, given that the Reading stewards seemed to be applying some sort of
dress code with at least one person being denied access for the apparent
crime of wearing a hat, the rugby shirt was not something I’d have risked.

Team news was that new signing Newton went straight into the side in a sort
of right wing back position. Rumours of Ferdinand’s return turned out to be
sadly premature though Mark Noble made a welcome return in the absence of
Williams who had picked up a training knock. The team lined up thus:
Bywater, Newton, Powell, Mullins, Mackay, Etherington, Noble, Lomas,
    Fletcher, Harewood, Zamora.

The early exchanges were scrappy. Fletch picked up what appeared to be a
painful knock off the ball which required lengthy treatment. The most
noteworthy individual appeared to be the assistant referee on the right hand
side who nailed his colours to the mast early on when flagging for a couple
of dives. This was, not for the first time this season, to become a
recurring theme throughout the match and, whilst I do not wish to condone
blatant gamesmanship, if referees are going to ignore it I really wish our
players would go down just that bit easier sometimes.

The clearest chance of the early part of the game went to Reading when, with
about five minutes gone, a Newman shot came back off the post. Bywater might
have got a touch but, as players went in for the rebound, the flag went up
to render the exercise somewhat academic.

On 13 minutes we went one down and, again not for the first time this
season, the long arm of officialdom can claim a major assist. Morgan dived
in front of Mackay without reward. So, working on the Preston Principle (if
at first you don’t succeed, dive, dive again) he went down again. Aided by
the linesman, ref Joslin (a strange choice given his poor performance in the
corresponding fixture last season) gave the free-kick which was headed in by
Kitson. Kitson went running across towards the linesman in thanks, though we
can be thankful he didn’t totally give the game away by hugging him.

About fifteen minutes later things went from bad to worse and again the ref
had no little part to play. A burst into the box ended with a dive from
Morgan so obvious that Joslin spotted it. We know this because he did the
crossed hands “play-on” sign. Kitson then put the ball out with Bywater
getting nowhere near it. Somehow Joslin saw this as a corner, which was
about as incorrect a decision as it could have been. Either it was a penalty
or a goal kick. Joslin was too busy congratulating himself on spotting the
earlier dive, though not to the extent of actually doing anything about it.
Since we had already proved that we can’t defend set pieces, the award of a
corner rather than the indirect free-kick in our favour that the earlier
dive merited was tantamount to giving them a penalty and so it proved. The
corner came over, got flicked on and Kitson picked up his second. Two set
plays two goals. You get the picture.

Up the other end there was little of note going on. A couple of weak and
wayward headers from Harewood apart, the passing game was all shot to pieces
and Reading had little trouble dealing with things. It was a poor display,
even by our own recent standards.

The second half started with a change of personnel with Chadwick coming on
to make his first appearance since doing his hamstring up at Sheffield,
Fletcher being the one to make way.

Well having supported this club for over 40 years now you’d think that by
now I’d be used to the resilience, gallows humour, and sheer bloody
mindedness of the average Hammer. However, our capacity for revelling in our
own misfortune reached new heights as the “claret & blue army” chant started
and got louder, and louder. There was a brief pause for breath that was
filled by “Bubbles” but by and large the chanting was fairly constant.

This didn’t stop Reading wrapping things up with a third goal of course.
Helped again by the obligatory assist from the ref who decided that a
full-blooded push on Newton that flattened the new signing was somehow not
worthy of punishment, Morgan’s first effort was saved by Bywater so Kitson
had two goes himself. Bywayer saved the first but Kitson had all the time in
the world to gather the ball and bury it.

Reading is yet another one of those clubs with the habit of playing a little
tune for their supporters when they score. This is not a habit of which I’m
personally fond, particularly as most clubs who do this seem to have a
singular lack of imagination as to the choice of tune. Memo to all clubs: If
you have to play a tune – and face it it’s a particularly naff thing to do
in the first place, please try to find something other than Papa’s Got A
Brand New Pigbag or Tom Hark. As long as it’s not Build Me Up Buttercup.

On this occasion the cacophony was drowned out by the Claret and Blue Army
chant which, in a Villa Park stylie, was simply cranked up a notch or two
much to the bemusement of the home support who could only come up with the
highly amusing “Pardew out”. Still this season at least they didn’t trust
the kid who owns the local computer with printing off posters – I mean Judas
was such a hard word to spell, so this year they stuck to the tried and
tested marker pen on cardboard method!

There was a brief respite from the misery when Sheringham, who had earlier
replaced Zamora, buried a loose ball from the edge of the box with 8 minutes
left on the clock but it was all far too little too late and the game
petered out despite a late run out up front for Elliot Ward. Mark Noble came
across to acknowledge the crowd’s efforts whilst the rest of the squad stuck
with the “clap from a distance” approach, presumably, and probably
correctly, embarrassed that the efforts on the pitch did not match those
    from the visiting support.

Reading hadn’t won this year but frankly they hadn’t played anyone as poor
as we were in this match. When we play that badly a half decent team can
beat us let alone Reading who weren’t really any great shakes themselves –
there again they didn’t have to be.,

I think it was the great Anthony Hancock (try UK Gold younger readers), who
once said something along the lines of “it’s not the despair I can’t stand,
it’s the hope”. This quote came to mind when we discovered that nothing had
changed league-table wise and that we were still 7th with a game in hand.
Despite a run of form that leaves a lot to be desired, and without being
able to blame Maltese Hammer who wasn’t present at the match, we are somehow
still in the mix. If we are to fail to make the play-offs I wish someone
would put us out of our agony and tell us now so we can at least get on with
    our lives.

    Player Ratings

Stephen Bywater (7) Let down badly by his defence whose efforts at
set-pieces beggared belief. Was unlucky to see his double save from Kitson
end up in the net. The kicking was much better this week, though after last
week it could hardly have got any worse.

Shaun Newton (5) Hadn’t had much training with his team mates and it showed.
Started off in a sort of wing back role that didn’t seem to add much either
    defensively or in midfield.

Chris Powell (7) Got some good blocks in, though his attacking options
seemed limited by the apparent disappearance of Etherington.

Hayden Mullins (5) Caught out in the air on the first two goals, a failing
that opposition sides have targeted all season.

Malky Mackay (4) Seemed even more immobile than usual and his distribution
tactic of hoofing it as far as possible was all-too predictable.

Carl Fletcher (5) Anonymous up to half time when he was replaced.

Mark Noble (5) Tried hard enough but on a day like this he had little
    support from his colleagues.

Matthew Etherington (5) Kept disappearing inside which, apart from taking
him into already overcrowded territory, meant that Powell had to sling in
    aimless crosses from deep.

Steve Lomas (6) Ran about a lot though with little effect.

Bobby Zamora (5) Like Harewood he struggled with an almost complete lack of
    service.

Marlon Harewood (5) Another frustrating day. Got into a couple of decent
positions but proved adept only at hitting row z or the ‘keeper’s arms.

    Substitutes

Luke Chadwick (5) (Replaced Fletcher, 45) Failed to really give the width
    that his introduction merited.

Teddy Sheringham (5) (Replaced Zamora, 62) Took the goal well but otherwise
    not much of an influence.

Elliott Ward (5) (Replaced Mullins, 87) Thrown on as a late sub but not
    enough time to shine.

Jimmy Walker (0) Did not play.

Nigel Reo-Coker (0) Did not play.

I got approached by this old crone on the road to Cheltenham racecourse. “Some lucky heather, my dearie?” I ignored her. I can tell you that I will never give the bum’s rush to a vendor of floral good fortune again given what’s happened over the past 48 hours.

At the races on Thursday afternoon, it looked a dead cert for a classic each way bet - 30-1 and running in the sacred claret and blue. OK, so maybe it should have been called Eastender rather than Westender, but believe you me, it was just like watching West Ham. Never has a nag sported such appropriate colours. Maybe you backed it yourself. It led all the way until the last fence. I would have happily taken third but it got pipped at the post and ended up fourth.

Found wanting at the last gasp and it left me going through the same routine as I have after recent football matches. Were we unlucky, robbed or never really good enough?

    Fancy a job?

I did stumble out of the back of the grandstand in stout-induced psychosis to see Peter Reid in his racing garb. It took extreme levels of willpower to stop myself falling to my knees and begging him to come and take over at Upton Park. “Peter, for f*ck’s sake, we need your scouse common sense to save us!” Yes, like all of you, I’m teetering on chasm of despair and falling prey to the most irrational thoughts.

Returning eastwards after a riotous St Patrick’s evening, the Queen’s Fish Bar had to be taken in pre-match to try and counter a lingering day long hangover. The banter in the extremely depleted East Stand was all about rumours and yet more rumours. Was it really true that Strachan was being lined up to come in? Someone else had heard “via a mate who knows a bloke who owns a kebab shop in Green Street” that there were people about looking to buy the club off Brown. All probably total bollocks, but I can tell you it cheered me up.

I have to say that I liked the look of the team, with Pardew sticking with the central defensive pairing of Anton and Elliot Ward. Newton and Powell were there again as well, but the midfield had Chadders down the left, Noble down the right and Reo-Coker and Fletch in the middle. Teddy and Marlon started up front with the promise of more firepower up front on the bench in the shape of Zamora and Sergei.

    Noble style

The first West Ham player to show some style was Noble, who seems to be growing in stature with every game. On 7 minutes he made a great run and put a nice ball through to Teddy, but the move broke down.

Three minutes after Newton had to be sharp to clear a ball from his own six yard line on 8 minutes, Fletch found himself free, but like quite a few promising moves tonight, the final ball was lacking, going behind Marlon. A shot was managed on goal, but it was weak.

Leicester were looking to break quickly and the returning Connors – who should never have been sold by West Ham – was looking his familiar lively and industrious self. On 12 minutes, Ward was beaten to a header at the far post, but fortunately the opportunity was wasted with a wild shot over Bywater’s bar.

At the midpoint of the half, Marlon set off on a determined run, but not for the first time tonight, he chose the wrong option, electing to shoot when there we had an overlap down the left.

Explain that rule to me again

The very next move saw Connors convert a penalty kick in emphatic style as Bywater was caught in no man’s land after a ball was sent forward. He started to come to try and cut out the pass, but then went backwards, taking out Stephen Hughes with his feet as he went by him. Like the decision in the Derby game, the ref bottled it and decided it was safer to award a penalty and a yellow card. If that was not the denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity and a red card, then perhaps someone would explain the rule to me.

Not that I’m complaining, for if we had gone to ten men at that point, then we really would have been in deep doodoo. This is what I mean about trying to decide about whether we’re having bad luck or not good enough. If we’re honest with ourselves we were lucky that Bywater was still on the pitch and we had the chance to try and recover.

    Classic Teddy

As it turned out, it ended up with us only being behind for 5 minutes, after Marlon went on a powerful run down the right and put over an excellent cross to pick out Teddy at the far post. He rarely misses chances like that.

Three minutes later, Marlon took the ball down perfectly on the edge of the box and he managed to turn and shot almost in one movement. That seemed to catch Walker on the hop, but he held the ball at the second time of asking.

We were ramping up the pressure and Ward had been clearly told to push up whenever possible particularly at set pieces. He managed to head down a free kick in the box on 32 minutes, and it took a real scramble for Leicester to clear their lines.

Chadders then decided to join the party on 35 minutes with a 30 yard run forward. He made a good pass to Reo-Coker, but his final ball was poor. Chadders had another one of his typical games tonight, drifting in and out of the game and looking prone to getting shrugged off the ball in 50/50 situations.

    Goal of the season

I was thinking about that lucky heather again as out of nowhere, Leicester scored a second. A long ball came forward from Walker and Ward was just beaten to a header. The ball was volleyed first time by Gillespie, who has now got my vote for the goal of the season so far at Upton Park. He couldn’t have hit it better and it just bounced near the foot of the post and in. Bywater had no chance.

Noble had one last chance in the first half as a Fletch pass found him. He got a shot away in the box, but this lacked power, allowing Walker to save fairly comfortably.

We hardly deserved to be losing at half time and the support of the home crowd had been superb throughout, even when we had conceded the goals. It had an air of nights under the floodlights in the good old days, although abuse aimed at the Chairman did feature throughout.

    Blimey, he’s going for goals

Pardew made the right decision at half time, deciding to make a change with the introduction of Sergei for Chadders. This was a statement of intent, and has to be one of the most adventurous moves our risk-averse manager has made this season. It had the hallmark of a man who felt that he had little to lose.
    Sergei on and off

Sergei made an immediate impact with a lovely pinpoint crossfield pass to pick out Shaun Newton. But unbelievably – or believably if you buy my lucky heather theory – Sergei pulled up with what looked like a calf injury. He signalled almost immediately to the touchline that he should come off and he was replaced by Z-man.

Nigel Reo-Coker’s final ball was poor again on 58 minutes and he wasted a very promising run. A minute later, we were expecting to see the back of the net ripple, after Noble won a free kick down the left. He sent over a good cross which got nodded down into the zone where Teddy rarely misses. He snatched at it and blasted wildly over.

All was forgiven just after the hour, when Teddy showed real quality yet again. He won a header and then got the ball back to his feet. He made a little jink and then got his shot away which looked like it took a deflection into the net.

    Joe is back

After a Leicester break which resulted in a comedy kick at fresh air, Teddy very nearly set up Noble with a beautiful little layoff on 67 minutes. It may be wishful thinking, but Noble reminds me a lot of Joe Cole and that move really deserved a goal, but he just fired wide of the post with a curling effort.

Z-man had been working hard since his introduction, even though he was the fourth choice striker. His touch – absent for the last couple of games – seemed to have returned and he used his chest brilliantly well to send Marlon on his way on 71 minutes. He managed to get exactly the right cross across the box and the ball ended up partially cleared to the feet of the advancing Fletch who somehow shaved the post with his shot.

Memories of Joe Cole returned again on 75 minutes as Noble employed great skill to completely outfox a defender with a turn. Terrific stuff and really encouraging that we have found some new talent who wants to give his all for the club. I said this when I saw Johnson for the first time, this boy will play for England.

Marlon proves he is no Brazilian

Zamora was still running around like a man possessed, and he managed to retrieve a ball which the Leicester defenders though would go out. He got exactly the right pass over, and there was Noble waiting, ready to become the hero of the moment. He hit a reasonably decent shot – although you felt that it should have found the corner – and it was only kept out by the hand of Dabizas. The ref saw that awarded a penalty and did not hesitate to brandish a red card and dispatch the Greek defender to the dressing room.

There seemed to be a moment of indecision as to who should take the spot kick. Noble looked keen to take it and most of us were expecting Teddy to stand up and complete a hat trick. However, Marlon got ready and adopted a stance – a sort of two step shuffle - which suggested an attempt to fool Walker. Instead of achieving that, he allowed the keeper to make an easy save to his left. It reminded me of his penalty in the shoot out at Sheffield. We needed less of an attempt at Copacabana beach football, more a Julian Dicks rocket.

This miss incensed the crowd and Marlon did get a lot of stick as a result. He has looked below par of late and is in dire need of a goal. His finishing looks totally bereft of confidence. I still like him, myself, and prefer him every time to Z-man, so everybody can now tell me that I’m mistaken about that.

    Time runs out

It was a great chance to get what would have been a deserved win, but you felt that it was not to be. We had three more good chances to win the game in the last 7 minutes or some of normal and added time. Fletch seemed to do everything right with a little cushioned lay off but Z-man was beaten to it by a defender and the ball was put behind. Then Noble found another fantastic pass to supply Teddy and he slotted a dangerous pass across the box which Marlon met with a back heel. If I’d bought that lucky heather, that would have gone in rather than getting blocked. Marlon had one last chance in time added on following another Teddy lay off, but his fragile confidence saw a complete hash of a shot.

I’ll come back to my Cheltenham question. Were we unlucky, robbed or not good enough? We did actually play quite well, but we could not overhaul and outfit that was threatened with relegation. The harsh reality is that we have now only got 2 points out of 15. Perhaps we should have got at least 8 with a draw at Leeds and a win against Leicester and Crewe. Things would look very different now, but we can’t operate on ifs and buts, we are in the business of success. Pardew may be ruing his bad luck if does have his employment terminated now, but we have made our task very difficult with some pretty diabolical football.

No Mullins? It’s a disgrace, I tell you

The one thing that really disappointed me was that I had bet one of my friends in the East Stand that Mullins would have come on for Teddy if the penalty had been scored. Well, the thought amused me, if nobody else.

We now have a beak of two weeks, where we can either regroup under Pardew for an attempt a final onslaught on the playoffs or bring in someone else to try and do the job. If a change in management is gonna happen it has to happen now. Pardew himself says that he has “no doubt” that he will stay in charge. He must know something we don’t or he’s putting a brave face on it. I wouldn’t bet on it, but I reckon that he will be there when we all turn up at Wigan, who will be looking to pay us back in the same coin we gave them last year when we destroyed their playoff ambitions.

    (Player ratings by Graeme Howlett)

    Player Ratings

Stephen Bywater (5) Whatever his manager thinks Steve was desperately lucky to remain on the pitch after the lazy challenge which led to Leicester's penalty. His confidence was hardly helped by the ridiculous chants of 'there's only one Jimmy Walker' immediately thereafter.

Shaun Newton (6) Despite not looking fully settled in (as one would expect after just two games) Newts gave an encouraging performance at right-back, and supported well in attack.

Chris Powell (6) Solid for much of the game. His 'Bambiesque' skip when running with the ball offered a little light relief.

Elliott Ward (7) Suffered an early wake-up call when he and Anton were left stranded for Leicester's first goal, but recovered well to give an accomplished performace. Although far from the finished article it's good to see home-grown youngsters like Elliott given a run out. After all the problems with injuries one can only hope that he can now become the kind of player who was being excitedly spoken of a year or two back.

Anton Ferdinand (7) A decent game for the rapidly improving Anton, who appeared to relish his battle with the ever-tricky Dion Dublin. Has a good chance to score the winner late on but he planted a free header into row Z of the BML.

Carl Fletcher (6) I have to hold my hands up and say I don't recall seeing an awful lot of Fletch last night. But that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Mark Noble (9) What a breath of fresh air this lad is during these troubled times. Full of energy and determination - as you would perhaps expect from a fresh-faced newcomer to the first team - but hugely encouraging nonetheless. And he's clearly better than Roy Keane ...

Nigel Reo-Coker (6) A better effort than in recent weeks but still let the game pass him by on occasions. Whatever is the problem with Nige needs to be sorted out quickly. A fully-functional Reo-Coker could prove an invaluable asset in the closing weeks of the season.

Luke Chadwick (6) One of those off-days for 'Chaddie' (what the?) who was replaced at half-time by Sergei Rebrov. There was no word on the injury from Alan Pardew post-match.

Teddy Sheringham (8) Did his job, scoring twice - although he really should have had three, but instead delegated the penalty to Marlon Harewood. The only downside was that his first touch let him down at times.

Marlon Harewood (7) Despite putting in a good performance all Marlon will be remembered for in this game is missing the penalty that would have won the game. It was shades of Freddie Kanoute v Arsenal all over again as his weak shot was easily saved by Ian Walker.

Sergei Rebrov (5) (Replaced Chadwick, 45) Replaced one crock and was crocked himself less than five minutes aftewr entering the fray. Alan Pardew was fairly scathing of his backroom staff who Pardew had promised would eradicate such silly injuries.

Bobby Zamora (7) (Replaced Rebrov, 51) Put in a fair amount of effort, and good to see him getting a fair bit of support from the crowd.

Jimmy Walker (0) Did not play.

Rufus Brevett (0) Did not play.

Hayden Mullins (0) Did not play.

Cottee planning Upton Park takeover - Soccernet

West Ham legend Tony Cottee has confirmed he has spoken to a couple of
potential investors over the possibility of taking over the Coca-Cola
Championship club. Cottee scored 147 goals in 437 games in two spells for
the Hammers and is leading a consortium to oust chairman Terence Brown from
Upton Park. The former England international told Sky Sports' Goals on
Sunday programme: 'I have spoken to a couple of potential investors. But
that is as far as it has gone. 'I will not do anything to affect West Ham's
promotion push. I want to see the club back into the Premiership - everyone
knows how much I love the club. I have to play it very carefully.' Friday's
2-2 home draw with Leicester left the Hammers two points adrift of a
play-off place while manager Alan Pardew has come under increasing pressure
    this season.

    Cottee wants West Ham
    By Trevor Haylett
    (Filed: 20/03/2005)

Tony Cottee last night confirmed that he is part of a consortium interested in buying troubled West Ham United.

Cottee watched his club get relegated from the Premiership two seasons ago and, despite reaching a play-off final last season, supporters remain unhappy at the current regime at the club.

While Alan Pardew, the manager, has not been universally embraced at the club, supporters reserve most of their anger for Terry Brown, the club chairman.

"I've spoken to some potential investors in West Ham, all of which are West Ham fans and have obviously done well in their respective businesses, and there is the potential of building a consortium with a view to buying the club," Cottee said.

"I love the club but the last thing I want to do is upset what everyone at West Ham is trying to do - get promotion via the play-offs.

"I can promise the supporters and the club that. The club are aware of this. I spoke to one of the representatives before the Leicester game."

Friday night's match against Leicester ended in a 2-2 draw but when the club last played Leicester at home, David James kept goal, Joe Cole pulled the strings in midfield and the winner was scored by Paolo Di Canio.

That team ended the Premiership in seventh place and it was cause for celebration but that won't be the case should they match that finish this season.

Some disgruntled fans chanted Di Canio's name on Friday night and there's a sense that they have not moved on, that they still can't accept their team's demotion but the harsh truth is that a third season among the lower order beckons if things don't improve soon.

A new regime would surely mean the departure of Pardew. If there is to be a parting of the ways, the fates have clearly decided that his final days will be filled with suffering.

In the last week he has experienced a crushing defeat in front of his former supporters at Reading and watched his team succumb to a last-minute equaliser at home to Crewe.

Into the punishing brew on Friday went an errant goalkeeper whose hesitation put his team behind, a weak penalty attempt from Marlon Harewood, and further missed opportunities late on as the Hammers failed to put away opponents reduced to 10 men through a red card and then nine through injury.

You know your luck is out when you send on a substitute (Sergei Rebrov) sporting two black eyes following a training-ground collision, who then has to hobble off five minutes later with a knee injury. Nobody in a crowd that was the seaon's lowest in the league at Upton Park was laughing. Perhaps the return of Cottee will bring back some smiles.

Cottee hopes card family join his pack - By Raoul Simons, Evening Standard
    22 March 2005

A takeover battle could be on the cards at West Ham after Tony Cottee today
stepped up his attempts to get serious financial backing for his consortium
hoping to buy the club. The former Hammers striker is understood to have
approached Don Lewin, multi-millionaire founder of Clinton Cards, in a bid
to attract investment. Cottee is close friends with Don's son, Clinton,
managing director of the greetings card chain, and is hoping to persuade his
father, the company chairman, to get on board. Together the two Lewins, who
are both West Ham supporters, are estimated to be worth around £40million.
Cottee this week admitted he had held talks with potential investors who he
described as "lifelong fans who want to put the club back where it belongs".
As local boys made good, the Lewins would appear obvious candidates. The son
of a chimney sweep, Don was born in the East End, where he worked on market
stalls from the age of 10. He started selling greetings cards from the boot
of his car at 26 before opening a shop in Essex in 1968 which he named after
his infant son. The business has since ballooned into a Stock
    Exchange-listed company - with a market capitalisation of £200m - which now
sells one in four of the two billion cards bought in Britain each year. In a
recent interview, Don, 71, said: "I have been poor and I have been rich, and
rich is better - there's no question about that. I enjoy my money. I can
have anything I want now, and it's a great feeling."
Despite his immense wealth, Don has stayed loyal to his roots in West Ham's
heartland. Clinton's headquarters is in Loughton, Essex, and he has also
passed on his support for the club to Clinton through regular visits to
Upton Park. Standard Sport understands that Don is giving careful
consideration to a proposal sent to him yesterday by Cottee's consortium,
though he has so far made no decision as to whether or not he is willing to
invest. It is, however, unlikely that any takeover attempt would rely on a
single backer, and Cottee would also require the support of other interested
parties. West Ham are estimated to have debts of £25m and could face more
financial problems if they fail to win promotion back to the Premiership
this season. Nevertheless, any move to buy the club is complicated by West
Ham's ownership structure. Chairman Terry Brown has 38 per cent of the
shares, while the majority of the others are held by the Warner and Cearns
families. One of these block shareholders would need to be persuaded to sell
for a bid to succeed. Brown, who has been personally blamed for the club's
decline by a section of West Ham supporters, had previously said he was
willing to listen to offers from interested parties. Racehorse owner Michael
Tabor, Birmingham City director David Sullivan and another unnamed
consortium have all been linked, but no deal has been forthcoming. The club
claim to have a net asset value of £40m and it is understood that outside
investors would need to find £25m to be taken seriously. Cottee said: "I
want what is best for the football club and I'd like to think we will be
able to get the necessary funds together. That will only be possible if the
    chairman is in agreement."

    Match Report
    HAREWOOD WINNER STUNS WIGAN

SECOND-HALF goals from Teddy Sheringham and Marlon Harewood have earned West
Ham United a brilliant 2-1 victory against Wigan at the JJB Stadium.
Without a win in five games, Alan Pardew rang the changes to take on the
team lying second in the Championship. The most notable was in goal, where
Jimmy Walker came in to make his third League start of the season in place
of Stephen Bywater. Tomas Repka returned at right-back after a three-match
suspension, with Shaun Newton moving to right midfield in place of Luke
Chadwick. In the centre of midfield Hayden Mullins earned a recall with Carl
Fletcher starting on the bench after playing twice for Wales last week. True
to the reputations of both sides, the game was open and fast right from the
kick-off. Tomas Repka had to be alert at the back post to prevent Leighton
Baines’ cross reaching Nathan Ellington after just five minutes. Graham
Kavanagh scuffed his 20 yard shot well wide with less than 10 minutes on the
clock, before Walker was called into action for the firs time, spreading
himself well at the feet of Jason Roberts. On 14 minutes Mark Noble had West
Ham’s first goal-bound effort, his dipping 25 yard shot no more than
catching practice for John Filan in the Wigan goal. Two minutes later a
slick Hammers move involving Teddy Sheringham and Nigel Reo-Coker released
Marlon Harewood, but he pulled his shot wide from the edge of the area.
Sheringham’s effort five minutes later did hit the target, but the Hammers
captain couldn’t find the power to trouble Filan. Tempers had hardly been
raised during the opening exchanges, until Reo-Coker lunged in far too late
on Baines, sparking an ugly melee and earning the Hammers midfielder a
yellow card. With passions suddenly running high, Wigan had a great chance
to open the scoring. Roberts chased a ball in behind the West Ham defenders
and was clattered by the on rushing Walker. But the referee waved away the
home side’s penalty claims and Walker recovered to make a safe catch from
Gary Teale’s shot. His next stop was far from straight forward, though.
Elliott Ward’s slip allowed Ellington to race clear on goal, but Walker won
the battle, spreading himself to make a great stop with his legs. With Wigan
well on top, all Hammers could do was hold on. They could not quite get a
grip on Teale though, as he jinked his way into the penalty area and curled
a shot just wide of the post. Three minutes before half-time Roberts went
down in the box again, Tomas Repka the challenger this time. But again
referee Curson waved away Wigan’s protests. It was left for Hammers to have
the final chance of the half, Sheringham’s lofted pass releasing Harewood
through the middle, who dinked the ball over the advancing Filan, but
    cleared the crossbar as well.

    HT: 0-0

Hammers started the second-half far better than they had the first,
Reo-Coker and Hayden Mullins busily supporting their forwards. But in their
urgency to push forward, Alan Pardew’s men left themselves vulnerable on the
break, and that allowed Jason Roberts to open the scoring with 51 minutes
gone. The Latics forward brought down a long ball under pressure from Anton
Ferdinand and burst past the defender to bury his shot low to Walker’s
right. Alan Pardew’s men hit back in the best possible fashion just five
minutes later. Elliott Ward swung in a cross from the left and the ball
broke to Teddy Sheringham at the far post. The Hammers striker, celebrating
his 39th birthday, showed a coolness honed over the years to lash the ball
past Filan and make it 1-1.
Lee McCulloch saw a back post header drift high of the crossbar and then a
wild shot fly even higher, before Sheringham raised the expectation level
inside the JJB when he lined up a 20 yard free-kick that eventually bent
straight into Filan’s arms. With 65 minutes gone West Ham wasted a crucial
chance. Elliott Ward’s long ball was chased by Harewood and when his
pressure caused David Wright to slip, the Hammer striker was through on
goal. He danced around Filan, but took the ball too wide and by the time he
could cross Wigan had got defenders back to clear. But there was no stopping
Harewood just a minute later. Mark Noble’s fine threaded ball released
Harewood and his finish was cool and clinical, firing low to Filan’s right
to put Hammers 2-1 in front. Paul Jewell introduced new signing Brett
Ormerod for the final 20 minutes to try and silence the fantastic West Ham
travelling fans. The change certainly added some urgency to the Wigan
attack. Soon Ward was making a fine block to deflect Graham Kavanagh’s
fierce shot after Ormerod had knocked the ball down.
Wigan were enjoying plenty of pressure, but a defence marshalled by the
excellent Anton Ferdinand refused to buckle. At the other end, Sheringham’s
flick on released the marauding Harewood again, this time his rasping near
post drive was tipped around the post by Filan. From the resulting corner
Noble picked out Ferdinand, but his header crept just over the bar. With
four minutes left Roberts’ header from Leighton Baines’ cross bobbled just
inches wide of Walker’s post, but that chance aside, Hammers continued to
put up a solid barrier against Wigan’s attack. Carl Fletcher was added to
that barrier when he replaced Shaun Newton with two minutes left to shore up
West Ham’s midfield. Four minutes of injury time were added, but Hammers
held firm until the final whistle to celebrate a 2-1 victory and one of
their most important three points of the season so far.

    West Ham weiter im Rennen.

Gestern ein spätes 3:0 gegen Coventry. Hier der Spielbericht:

WEST HAM UNITED 3 COVENTRY CITY 0
    by East Stand Martin
    Saturday, 9th April 2005

I lasted 45 minutes today. Temporarily exiled to the Dr Martens Stand, I pleaded with a steward to let me return to the East Stand at half time. Fortunately the bloke agreed and I was mightily relieved to return to the understated squalor of my spiritual home.

The reason for being on the wrong side of the ground was that ESM Jnr was part of the Jobserve Kick Off Crew. You may have seen him right at the end of the line to the left of the tunnel. He loved it – especially the bit where he got to have a chat with Chris Cohen.

Anyway, hats off to Jobserve, all the kids had a great time.

    Continuity

For the third match in a row, the manager decided to start with the same lineup. Nothing at all wrong with that in principle, although readers of my Burnley report will recall that I said that Matty had really made a difference when he had been introduced. The problem was who to leave out – the obvious choice would have been Mullins, but you could not find too much at fault at all with his recent performances playing in the centre of midfield.

The opening quarter of this game proved to be pretty scrappy with some evidence of good approach play by West Ham but little indication of any quality finishing. Coventry, buoyed by the midweek win over fellow relegation strugglers Forest looked determined to keep it tight.

In fact, it could be said that the Sky Blues had the best of it winning a couple of corners in a row on the 7 minute mark and then troubling Walker with a curling shot which resulted from a free kick. Jimmy – who instils confidence with his positive keeping and assured kicking – had to be alert to turn the ball away. On this form I see little chance of an early return by Bywater.

    First chance

On 17 minutes, we had our first real chance as Teddy conjured up a lovely flick to find Marlon, but the ball seemed to get stuck under his foot and he scooped the ball harmlessly over the bar. Three minutes later, Marlon returned the favour with a nice lay off to Teddy following some good work by the lively Newton. Teddy tried to chip Coventry keeper Luke Steele, but he managed to gather the ball without too much difficulty.

Marlon then tried a curler on 26 minutes after he hunted down a long ball forward from the back. His pace normally prevails in these one-on-one situations and Steele did well to dive to his left an turn the shot around the post.

A minute later it was Reo-Coker’s turn to show some pace coming forward as he flew through the middle, shrugged off a tackle and then got a shot away which deflected. The keeper was rooted to the spot and was mightily relieved to see the ball spin wide.

    Over-elaborate

On 32 minutes, Mark Noble should have given us the lead after Teddy fired in a great cross from the right across the face of the goal. Noble, who does have a fine array of skills, may have been watching a little too much of Joe Cole, as his attempted back heel went wide of the post with Steele stranded. I really hope he scores soon as his recent performances deserve a goal.

A minute later, Teddy made a superb cushioned header to find Reo-Coker who went off like a train. His cross was good, but he couldn’t have looked up to survey prospects as there was absolutely no-one in the box and the chance went begging.

Coventry had caused few problems in the half, but it was during the two minutes of added time that they had a gilt edged opportunity to nick the lead. Gary McSheffrey, who has a real turn of pace, found some space in the box and got a shot away, but just like at Wigan, seven days previously, Walker had got into exactly the right position to make a fine save.

If we had gone in one down it would have been against the run of play, but Coventry had battled well to break up the West Ham play. On returning to the East Stand, I did remind a few of my neighbours that the last two wins had come from goals in the second half.

    Matty for Mullins

At half time, Pardew made the right decision to introduce Matty and withdraw Mullins. Nothing wrong with Hayden’s play, but we were desperate – just like at Burnley – to find some width.

Coventry started well and won a corner which led to another excellent save by Walker from Welsh international Robert Page.

West Ham then seemed to step up a gear. On 50 minutes Marlon made a nice head on to Newton who ran on and then put over a great cross to find Marlon almost free. His header was poor and sailed over the bar. Then three minutes later a corner was won down the left and Matty delivered a great ball over to find Anton’s head. He did everything right, heading downwards, but Steele made a brilliant save. From the corner that followed, Shaun Newton managed to hit a superb volley, which was again saved, and Noble could do no more than lift the loose ball over the bar.

    Unbelievable

On 56 minutes, Marlon blasted over a head down by Teddy and then Marlon wasted a great opportunity when he headed a Newton cross very poorly. He couldn’t believe it and we couldn’t believe it.

Elliot Ward, who has brought an incredible solidity to central defence alongside Anton, was booked on 61 minutes for punching a ball away after a free kick had been awarded. This boy has been incredibly impressive since introduced and seems to have all the quality shown earlier in the season by Davenport. I have high hopes for him.

Coventry were trying spoiling tactics and the frustration was building. On 71 minutes, Pardew elected to swap Marlon for Z-man, presumably because the former was still feeling the effects of the knock he had picked up at Burnley. He had not looked at his best today.

    Matty is our saviour

Matty was beginning to cause real problems down the left, although the response from the Coventry defence was to foul him a couple of times. It was one of these fouls that led to the breakthrough on 75 minutes. Matty sent in one of those balls to the near post that always creates nightmares for defenders and there was veteran Richard Shaw to head the ball past his own keeper.

The goal was a mighty relief and it gave us new impetus. Matty was rampaging down the left and on 86 minutes he was brought down advancing on goal. The ref immediately pointed at the spot and as Marlon was off the pitch, we didn’t have to try and remember whether it was his turn or Teddy’s to take the penalty. Teddy stood up and tried one of those audacious Di Canio-like chips which the keeper saved with an outstretched hand. The ball still ended up in the net as Teddy pounced, but the ref decided it should be taken again for reasons which weren’t entirely apparent. A bloke near me said “For f*ck’s sake just hit it!” and that is exactly what he did to get his 21st goal of the season.

Three minutes later, Matty caped one of the best halves I have seen him play for some time when he went on another run down the left and chipped over a perfect cross to find the grateful Z-man who headed past Steele.

Coventry had one last attack I added time, but who was on hand to defend what would have been a certain goal – Matty Etherington. Surely he must start against Millwall next Saturday.

    Brown sit down

Just before the end of the game, there was a loud chorus of “3-0 and we want Brown out” and this was the precursor to the planned anti-Brown sit in. This looked like it involved a couple of thousand fans, with a banner in the lower part of the Centenary Stand.

As much as I have distaste for the parasitical regime that runs our club, I have to say that the timing of this protest is wrong. I won’t join in the uncritical adoration of Tony Cottee either as I happen to think his intervention – regardless who may have leaked the news out – was ill judged and premature. I say that with a heavy heart because that bloke is a legend and was my idol in the 1980’s. He’s also West Ham through and through, but that does not make him infallible in the tricky business of corporate takeovers.

The reality is that nothing will change at the top until our future is known for next season. Fail to get promotion and there is a high probability of a new Chairman. Succeed and Brown might hang it out or certainly get a better payday. You can call me old fashioned but my overwhelming desire is to see our club go to Cardiff and win. I will not join in with those that want us to fail to achieve regime change. The sweet taste of victory in Cardiff would be tempered, of course, by the recognition that Brown’s bacon might have been saved or that he will get more cash than he deserves. That is where we are, we might not like it, but we have to accept it.

    (Player ratings by Graeme Howlett)

    Player Ratings

Jimmy Walker (8) Two world class saves kept the scores level until we managed to make the breakthrough late on. Couldn't fault his distribution either.

Tomas Repka (7) Did a job, but not his busiest day at the office. Crossing was vastly improved.

Chris Powell (7) Good performance, solid in defence and supported the attacks well.

Elliott Ward (7) Beginning to look more confident as each game passes. Had a real battle against Goater but came through admirably.

Anton Ferdinand (7) His partnership with Ward is reaping great dividends. His efforts only spoiled by some occasional poor distribution.

Nigel Reo-Coker (7) Still not quite the same NRC that has a huge imoact at the start of the season but encouraging signs nonetheless. Did well to get back up after being smacked in the face by the ball from close range in the first-half.

Hayden Mullins (6) Hayden has looked a far better player since reverting to his more natural central midfield berth. Replaced in a half-time reshuffle that saw the introduction of Matthew Etherington.

Mark Noble (7) Worked hard as always, looked better in the second half when moved from the wing into the centre, his more natural position.

Shaun Newton (6) A fair game, worked hard on the right flank and was unlucky not to score with a tremendous shot which was well saved by Luke Steele.

Teddy Sheringham (7) Not one of Teddy's more influential performances but he'll be pleased to increase his goal count with the penalty.

Marlon Harewood (6) Despite the presence of the odd boo-boy who still stupidly lambast his efforts Marlon worked hard although he had one of those off days which strikers love to forget.

    Substitutes

Matthew Etherington (7) (Replaced Mullins, 45) Took a while to get into the game but his contribution to all three goals will not have gone unnoticed.

Bobby Zamora (6) (Replaced Harewood, 72) His only real impression was with the goal which he took well.

Stephen Bywater (0) Did not play.

Carl Fletcher (0) Did not play.

    Stoke - West Ham 0:1

Tor: der 2 Minuten zuvor eingewechselte Bobby Zamora in der 78. Minute

    Preston North End 4.Platz 74 Punkte +12
    Millwall (A) 1:1
    Wigan (H) 2:2
    Derby (A) 0:2

    Derby County 5.Platz 70 Punkte +12
    Gillingham (H) 3:1
    Leicester (A) 1:1
    Coventry (A) 2:0
    Preston (H) 2:0

    Reading FC 6.Platz 70 Punkte +12
    Cardiff (A) 2:1
    Wolves (H) 2:0
    Wigan (A) 1:3

    West Ham 7.Platz 69 Punkte +10
    Brighton (A) 2:0
    Sunderland (H) 1:1
    Watford (A) 2:1

    Sheffield United 8.Platz 66 Punkte +4
    Watford (A) 2:1
    Millwall (H) 1:0
    Wolves (A) 2:0

    4. Derby 80 Punkte +18
    5. Reading 76 Punkte +15
    6. West Ham 76 Punkte +13
    7. Preston 76 Punkte +10
    8. Sheffiel 75 Punkte +8

    a) 6: Campbell, Cole, taylor, Hoyte, Garry, Smith

    Bleibt Justin Hoyte...

    REPKA IN VIDEO ROW
    Sunday, 24th April 2005
    By Matthew O'Greel

Full-back Tomas Repka could be in hot water following a fracas with travelling Hammers fans after yesterday's 2-2 draw against Brighton.

A video has emerged of Repka responding to travelling Hammers fans who blasted their side for conceding a late equaliser at the Withdean Stadium yesterday.

In it, the 31-year-old Czech can be seen arguing with angry supporters, whilst eye-witnesses confirm that he was heard telling fans to 'f*ck off' after they blasted Alan Pardew and his team immediately following the final whistle.

Pardew, whose side rose into the play-off places despite conceding that late goal was called 'a f*cking disgrace' by a section of fans, who can also be heard on the video abusing players as they left the field. A chorus of angry booing can also be heard as the players depart down the tunnel.

Repka was also abused after retaliating to the angry crowd, following a game which extends the Hammers unbeaten run to eight matches.

Particularly disturbing is that only 700 tickets were made available for Hammers fans yesterday, and those responsible for the abuse were either bond holders or regular away attendees - destroying the myth that the constant stream of negativity witnessed this season is the sole responsibility of Upton Park's fairweather fans.

    Alle spielen für die Hammers:

Reading verliert zuhause 1:2 gegen Wolverhampton
    Coventry schlägt Derby 6:2
Sheffield verliert zuhause gegen Millwall 0:1

Damit die Tabelle nach 45 Spieltagen:

    1. Sunderland 91 +34
    2. Wigan 84 +42

    3. Ipswich 84 +29
    4. Preston 75 +11
    5. Derby 73 +9
    6. West Ham 70 +9

    7. Reading 70 +9
    8. Sheffield 67 +3

    Brighton (20) - Ipswich (3)
    Derby (5) - Preston (4)
    Watford (16) - West Ham (6)
    Wigan (2) - Reading (7)
    Wolverhampton (10) - Sheffield (8)

    Enstand damit:

    1. Sunderland
    2. Wigan

    3. Ipswich
    4. Derby
    5. Preston
    6. West Ham

    Damit die Playoffs:

    West Ham - Ipswich
    Preston - Derby

    Re: WHUFC

    DSR-Uwe - 08.05.2005, 16:22

West Ham pipped Reading to the play-offs after beating Watford away.
Goals from Anton Ferdinand and a Marlon Harewood penalty ensured Alan Pardew's claimed sixth spot, setting up a play-off semi-final against Ipswich.

After Watford failed to clear a corner, Elliot Ward's cross from the left found Anton Ferdinand, who volleyed home.

A handball by James Chambers allowed Harewood to score with a penalty, with a late spotkick from Heidar Helguson pulling a goal back for Watford.

Last season West Ham also reached the playoffs, losing out to Crystal Palace in the final after beating Ipswich over a two-legged semi-final.

With so much to play for Alan Pardew's side were quickly on the offensive, Shaun Newton's fierce drive from the edge of Watford's penalty box fizzing inches wide after just four minutes.

West Ham' s play visibly relaxed as news filtered around Vicarage Road that Wigan had scored twice against Reading early in the first half.

At the start of Sunday, West Ham and Reading had been tied on 70 minutes and were level on goal difference.

But the opening goal continued to elude the visitors, helped in part by some wayward finishing.

Bobby Zamora somehow scuffed wide a superbly-worked set-piece shortly after the half-hour mark, while Harewood forced Alec Chamberlain into a fine reflex save from close range.

Finally three minutes before the break West Ham made the breakthrough.

Ward chipped the ball into a packed penalty area for Ferdinand to let fly with a well-executed volley that angled into the corner of the net via a slight deflection.

Chambers' handball allowed Harewood to slot home from the spot, prompting huge celebrations from West Ham's 4,000 travelling supporters.

In the 87th minute Tomas Repka fouled Helguson to give away a penalty, the Icelander dusting himself down to convert the spotkick.

West Ham and Ipswich will meet at Upton Park in the first-leg of their semi-final on the weekend of 14 and 15 May.

West Ham were relegated from the Premiership in May 2003.

    COME ON YOU IRONS !

Die Claret and Blue Army spielt heute mit folgender Aufstellung:

Walker - Repka, Ferdinand, Powell, Mullins - Ward, Reo-Coker, Newton, Etherington - Harewood, Zamora

    BOBBY ZAMORA !!!!!

    EAST LONDON IS WONDERFUL !!!

    HAMMERS GOING TO CARDIFF!

IT'S a memorable night for the Hammers at Portman Road as two second-half goals from Bobby Zamora have booked West Ham United's place in the Play-off Final.

Zamora struck twice in ten minutes to send the Hammers to Cardiff with a 4-2 aggregate win over Ipswich Town on a night that will be long remembered by an army of travelling West Ham fans who were again superb.

Alan Pardew made one change from the side that drew 2-2 at Upton Park, Carl Fletcher earning a recall in place of Shaun Newton. It meant a reshuffle for Pards' side, Nigel Reo-Coker moving to the right of midfield and Fletcher coming in to centre-midfield.

Ipswich began this game with the side that finished the first leg, Matt Richards and Darren Currie prefered to Drissa Diallo and former Hammer Kevin Horlock.

The players were greeted by a thunderous atmosphere at Portman Road and it was no surprise that the tempo was fast and furious early on.

With barely a minute gone Marlon Harewood had already let fly for the Hammers, while Tommy Miller had done the same at the other end for Ipswich, both efforts well wide.

On four minutes Bobby Zamora created the first real threat for West Ham, forcing his way to the by-line and whipping in a wicked cross that was plucked from the air by a full-stretch Kelvin Davis.

Ipswich began to probe the Hammers defence though and on 11 minutes opened up a good chance when Jason De Vos flicked on a long throw to an unmarked Darren Currie, but his shot from 12 yards went straight at Jimmy Walker.

Moments later Matty Etherington hit back for the visitors with a weaving run that ended with a shot that drew a smart block out of Davis before De Vos hooked the ball away for a corner.

It was end to end stuff that typified the importance of the occasion. Etherington was again West Ham's dangerman and on 25 minutes another jinking dart in midfield drew a cynical challenge from Ian Westlake that earned the Ipswich midfielder a booking.

On the half hour mark Harewood hooked a volley well over, before Fletcher picked out the marauding Tomas Repka with a wonderful cross-field pass, but the Czech's cross was cut-out by the fists of Davis before it could reach Zamora.

With the half-time whistle seven minutes away Walker suffered a heart-stopping moment when Currie's swerving 30 yard drive wriggled out of his grasp and dipped just over the bar for a corner.

As the half-time whistle approached the frenetic pace of this game refused to abate, the teams trading attacks right up until the whistle, which came with the match still finely poised at 0-0.

    HT: 0-0

Hammers began the second-half perfectly, Repka swinging in a viscious right-wing cross inside the opening minute that Fabian Wilnis almost turned into his own net at the far post.

Nigel Reo-Coker's low drive brought a comfortable stop out of Davis five minutes later, which was quickly followed by a similar effort from Zamora, Davis again holding onto the ball well.

The Portman Road atmosphere continued to crackle with tension as both team's probed in search of that all important first goal.

It arrived a minute past the hour mark and it was Hammers who scored it. Carl Fletcher played the ball into Harewood, who forced his way to the by-line and crossed for Bobby Zamora, arriving to score the simplest of tap-ins and send West Ham's travelling army of fans wild.

It got even better for Hammers ten minutes later. Again Harewood was the provider sendfloating across a wonderful angled cross that Zamora with perfect timing, volleying across Davis and into the corner of the net to make it 2-0.

Ipswich immdeately responded by bringing on Dean Bowditch in place of Jim Magilton. The need for more security at the back prompted Pards to withdraw Tomas Repka and the goalscoring hero Zamora to bring on Christian Dailly and Shaun Newton.

Hammers steeled themselves for a rearguard action, and that's exactly what Elliott Ward was doing when he threw himself in the way of Bowditch's shot as the ball dropped to the young striker in the box.

With two minutes left Mark Noble came on to replace the tired legs of Matty Etherington as Hammers looked to kill off Ipswich's promotion challenge.

The home crowd were briefly encouraged by five minutes of added time, but the West Ham defence, marshalled once again by the excellent Anton Ferdinand, stood firm.

Darren Bent's header from six yards skimmed narrowly past Walker's post, but Alan Pardew's men would not be denied.

The final whistle was greeted with scenes of jubilant celebration by the Hammers faithful as West Ham United once again celebrated a memorable Play-off semi-final victory over Ipswich Town.

Now the Hammers will go to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff hoping to go one better this season and make it a triumphant return to the Premiership.

    England, Championship, Play-off: West Ham United - Preston Noth End 1:0 (0:0) - 30.05.2005 18:20

    West Ham ist dritter Aufsteiger

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alan Pardew has confirmed that he is seeking to extend 39-year-old striker Teddy Sheringham's contract for another year.

The former Man Utd and Portsmouth striker joined the Hammers last summer on a free transfer from Fratton Park, and has won over his doubters by hitting 20 goals for the Hammers this season.

And Pardew has spoken of his desire to retain the services of the former England man - whatever happens on Monday at the Millenium Stadium.

"I want Teddy to stay here, irrespective of Monday's result," said Pardew in an interview with Friday's Evening Standard.

"He has done a magnificent job for us this season and his experience and talent will be invaluable again next season, whether we are in the Premiership or the Championship."

Meanwhile, Anton Ferdinand - a front runner along with Sheringham for the KUMB Player of the Year award and som 20 years younger - is set to sign an extended contract at Upton Park.

    Sven praises West Ham
    By Michael Hart, Evening Standard
    31 May 2005

Sven-Goran Eriksson today joined the acclaim for West Ham and suggested that their elevation to the Premiership might produce another crop of young players for England, writes Michael Hart.

The England coach said: "I'm sorry for Preston, but very happy for West Ham. They have produced a lot of top-class players. Had West Ham kept all their best players when they were in the Premier League they might have played in the Champions League. It is a big, famous club."

Eriksson will monitor the progress of Anton Ferdinand, Nigel Reo-Coker and Mark Noble, who all played in the play-off win.

    BOBBY'S DREAM COME TRUE

BOBBY Zamora celebrated a dream day in the Millennium Stadium after the Barking-born player's 57th minute goal secured a 1-0 win over Preston and West Ham United's return to the Premiership.

"It's a dream come true," gushed Bobby. "I'm a local lad, there were loads of my friends and family at the Millennium and just to win and be part of the team that got the Club back to the Premier League - it's just unbelievable.

"But to score the winning goal in front of all the fans of my club was just beyond my wildest dreams. It's a fantastic moment for all the fans and I hope they savour it.

"We were having the better chances and we always looked capable of scoring. A few chances had come and gone, but we never lost our heads and the focus of the players was just incredible.

"Our belief and determination going into the game was brilliant. After last year we definitely had something to prove, but as the game kicked-off all that was put behind us. We had to beat Preston and we showed great professionalism in the way we went about it.

"Matty put in a great ball and thankfully I managed to finish it. My emotions at that moment were just indescribable. I saw all the fans going mad behind the goal and I wanted to celebrate with them. But we had to get our focus back and hold out, which we did.

"The celebrations in the dressing room and on the flight home were mad. Even Jimmy Walker, who did brilliantly but unfortunately got injured right at the end, was joining in."

Like West Ham, Bobby is a player who has had his critics this season. Indeed, rumours flew at the start of the year that the 24-year-old striker would leave the Club. But Bobby stuck to his belief that he belonged at Upton Park and in these Play-offs the Hammers have reaped the rewards.

"It's been an up and down season," he admitted. "There were times when I didn't really know what the future held. There was talk about me leaving and I knew that I might have to move to get regular first-team football.

"But West Ham is my local club and I would have never wanted to leave. Thankfully I stayed and now I'm delighted to have come good for the Club at just the right time.

"Scoring the two goals in the semi-final against Ipswich was a terrific moment, but the Millennium Stadium tops anything I've ever experienced in my life. It was incredible."

With the Premiership now beckoning for Bobby and his team-mates, the striker is determined to prove that he can play at the highest level.

"I've had a taster of playing in the Premiership and now I really want to show what I can do at that level," he said. "I don't really think I was given my chance before, but now I'd love to do well in the top-flight.

"West Ham United is a Premiership club again and now we've got to make sure that we keep it that way."

    Carroll completes West Ham move

    Roy Carroll's career statistics
Newly-promoted West Ham have completed the signing of former Manchester United goalkeeper Roy Carroll.
Hammers boss Alan Pardew said he was delighted to sign the Northern Ireland international, 27, ahead of his side's first season back in the Premiership.

"I believe Roy's best years are ahead of him," he told West Ham's website.

"When a club is re-introduced to the Premier League, as we are, goalkeeper is an essential position. Roy brings all the qualities we need."

Pardew also promised there would be more new faces at Upton Park before the start of the season.

"This will be the first of what I hope will be three or four more signings to strengthen the team for the challenge ahead."

Carroll began his career with Hull in 1995 and was signed by Wigan for £350,000 in 1997.

    __________

West Ham United is pleased to announce their highly-rated 18-year-old England youth international midfielder Mark Noble has pledged his future to the Club by signing a new four year deal.

Mark made his full debut for the Hammers in last season's FA Cup Third Round win against Norwich City at the Boleyn Ground and went on to make 10 League and six substitute appearances, including the Play-Off semi-final victory at Ipswich and in the Final in Cardiff.

Born and bred in the East End, with his family still living close to the Boleyn Ground, Mark is a lifelong Hammers fan who came up through the Club¹s Youth Academy ranks from the age of 12.

After he made his debut, manager Alan Pardew, said: "We think very highly of Mark. He and his family love this Club and he's made a terrific start to his senior West Ham United career. If he keeps on working hard and continues to develop as he has, there is no reason why he cannot become a top player for this Club."

A dürfte für Away stehen - demnach in Deutschland.

Pardew waiting on Baros - SKy
by Adam Marshall - created on 25 Jul 2005

Alan Pardew hopes West Ham can still pull off an audacious swoop for
Liverpool's Milan Baros. After reaffirming his interest in the Czech
Republic striker, Pardew revealed he is still keen to make further additions
to his squad. Belenenses defender Pedro Pele is one of the names under
consideration as he looks to add some youth to his group following promotion
to The Premiership. "I don't think it takes a lot of selling, West Ham,"
Pardew explained to Sky Sports News. "We're in the market for a striker as
well. We're hoping to secure a striker to put competition on the three or
four guys we've got at the moment. "I think any quality player who becomes
available in a striker's role, we want to be aware of. "If he [Baros] is
made available by Liverpool, we will certainly be interested. "Our
aspirations have to be this high because we are a great club."
Despite already making five new additions this summer, Pardew would not stop
spending, even if he does manage to snare Liverpool star Baros. "No, there's
a couple of other little things I'd like to do," he added. "Obviously we
have got to look at the be all and end all for us, which is making sure we
are a stable club in The Premiership.
"There might be a chance of taking one or two young players that could do
that so I might do that as well."

    ___

West Ham have enquired after Christiano Lucarelli from Livorno but no talks
    held yet
