    3D Modelling Resources / Tutorials
Free Programs (Everything is free if you're a pirate though, LOL!)

Gmax - A modeling program made by discreet(The creators of 3DS Max) aimed at gamers. It's a watered down version of 3DS - their UI's are similar. Some games come with plugins that allow you to edit existing content, create and import content, or export and view content with Gmax. It's distributor, TurboSquid, requires you to have a key for the software. The key is free, you just have to register(which is also free)
You can find tutorials here to help you get started: http://www.sk-flightsim.com/tutorials.html

anim8or - I've heard of this just recently, from what I see, it doesn't look too bad at all.
Tutorials - (Click tutorials on the nav menu of the site)

Hammer - Not really for rendering anything. This is a content editor by Valve for any game running on the Half Life or Source engines, It's totally free, and if you don't trust this site, it's available via Steam, just Download the Source Development Kit (SDK).

Milkshape - Not the most high-end thing I've ever seen, but hey it's free. I guess it's like a watered down Gmax?
Get tutorials for it here: http://chumbalum.swissquake.ch/ms3d/tutorials.html

SketchUp - A simple, fast, easy to learn app by Google.

    Commercial Programs

3DS Max - The best program out there, IMO. The Halo series was made using various versions of this program.

Maya - Never used it myself, but I've heard lots of good things about it.

Cinema 4D(C4D) - This is what is used to make "C4Ds". However, the other programs listed above are perfectly capable of rendering such things.

Bryce - I've used it, and I think it's safe to say, this is the most easiest to learn and use for making abstract things. It's simple, straightforward, and I recommend this for beginners.
Click here see an example of what you can make with this! - I made it over a year ago :D

modo 203 - "modo 203 delivers the next evolution of 3D modeling, painting and rendering in a single integrated and accelerated platform."

Lightwave - "LightWave v9 marks a rebirth; core changes provide a tremendous increase in user interface performance, dynamics systems improvements and render speed enhancements. LightWave v9 adds a broad range of new features and improved workflows for faster and more efficient production at all levels. LightWave has been production proven time and time again in films, television, games, print, engineering, architecture and more."

ZBrush - Looks like a great program to me - "ZBrush is the industry's leading digital sculpting and design application. Built for artists by artists, ZBrush is a unique modeling, texture painting and illustration tool that allow artists to concentrate on their ideas rather than the software..."

Tutorials - I'll keep adding to it.

Pheonix - "Phoenix is a 3DS MAX® atmosphere that was developed with the purpose of simulating real fire.
