Re: A Green Machine?
octihead - 30.05.2007, 16:28A Green Machine?
Ive noticed an increasing amount of articles are being written about the power computers use and their enviromental impact.
I use a high end graphics card myself but as I choose not to run a car and I am careful in other ways I dont feel guilty.
I would not however use crossfire or S.L.I and the thought of systems with two graphics cards plus one more to run the physics just seems to much in terms of power. I thought quad c.p.u's were meant to handle the physics side of things?

Well im a low energy consumption / save the trees guy as well.
So two 2900xt crossfire would be really too much power consumption. Apart from that sli and crossfire dont help with high res textures cause all the data has to be stored twice to the memory.
:laser: crossfire; SLI :jedi:

Looks like A.M.D's R.D 790 motherboard will have four pcie slots for quad graphics.
Four 2900xt's seems a bit excessive given its power requirments and the noise it produces. The noise of one 1900xt is bad enough.
Not just save the trees, it's save the wallet.
The cost of four cards plus the increase in electricity used, is a lot of money. Quad core c.p.u's are also heavy on the juice and if you add in the fact that a lot of people who use high -end kit also overclock c.p.u's and graphics card's, its a massive increase in power and heat.

My systems heavy on power. One high end card is enough for me though.
Quad core c.p.u and quad graphics seems a bit silly given the power it needs.

Well quad SLI has an insane power demand, but with the next stepping you can use a quad core 6600 @ 90 Watt and I think thats ok.
