    Cleaning parts
    Hi all

Just wondering about your cleaning techniques..
At the moment I'm using electrolysis in cleaning a Spitfire part from a Norwegian Squadron which made a crashlanding some 15 km's from here...

    Paul

    good question.
for me it depends what the part is made of.
i only use soapy water when possible. i try to preserve any paint.
i clean steel or iron and then treat with a rust inhibitor.
i have found nothing that stops corrosion of aluminium.
    any recommendations?
how do you use electrolysis? i thought that was only good for plating?

    Roy,

Using an old AC Adaptor, put some clamps on it and connect the black thread to the part and the red one to an old teaspoon. I place them in a glass with a teaspoon salt added to it and let the current do the rest..
In this case it's a brass part.

    Hi all,

I use the same as Paul, but most of the part i cleaned are parts of aluminium or brass. For this material I do this:

    1. Soak in hot water with dish soap
    2. Cleaning with a soft brush
    3. To spray with "Clilit Bang" (strong cleaner for chrome, wash basin and more) On the bottle is the notice not to use on aluminium, but this cleaner works very good ! The aluminium and brass becomes very many cleaner.
For simple diryt parts reach 2 minutes.)
    4. Washing under hot water
    5. If it is needful i clean and polish it with a "Dremel" and a little round wire brush

This "Clilit Bang" works very good on rating plates

    Dear All.
The parts that I have recovered have been in the sand or sea for the last 60 odd years and on alloy you get very bad corrosion and a build up of crustation from the sea.To remove crustation I use a toffee hammer(very small hammer for breaking slabs of toffee when my Mum had a shop) and small screwdriver and chip away at the crustation, when removed wire brush or use rotary wire brush with electric drill and wash off in soapy water and then air dry.If you leave outside to long the alloy will start to fustate and turn to powder,so to overcome this and to preserve paint or cleaned condition of parts you must use a CLEAR LAQUER using 6 or 8 coats ,this not only makes parts look glossey and new looking but stops white powder reapearing again.(look at the pic's I sent to Roy to post onB24/ PB4Y-1 all came off the beach)
