Wow looks like intel is firing on all cylinders even with the next CPU generation.
I hope that AMD can do something about it.
Now that they aquired ATI :116 , the fate of both companies could depend on it.
At the moment AMD's market share is supposed to go down the drain.

Some pretty bearlake motherboards, with support for ddr2 and ddr3

When are A.M.D going to put out some info. The evil empire of Intel has never looked so attractive, time to dust off the Darth Vader suit in the cupboard and practice some intimidating breathing.
With such a large passive copper heatsink as this the galaxy will be mine
Spot the diffrence

I agree Octihead, buy the jedi always have to sense the future as well. There is a voice in my head telling me I should buy a cheap but fast core 2 duo e 6700 dual core. And I should do that now.
But then I read articles like this
http://www.eetimes.eu/199201671
about octocores and raytracing.
"The result is an order of magnitude more realistic than the current generation of games. The movement of the characters and their lighting might even rival reality.
Such real-time rendering, said Battista, requires about five quad-core machines running together for a 20 rame-per-second playback rate."
But raytracing wont happen any time soon and maybe it will never happen big style.
So I will buy a system like this in the following weeks or months:
Vista 32 bit, geforce 8600 GT, 2 GB ram, core 2 duo e 6600 or 6700.

that is like my system ehhe. I am going to wait till ati hits the market, then probably get a hopefully lowerish price 8800 GTX or something. Gonna see what the ati card is like for image quality though, and see what the future holds.
Hopefully by that time nvidia will have some decent vista drivers ;)

Sensible thing would be to wait for DX10 and see whats benchmarking best.
My machines 2 years old and I am bored but it seems best to at least try and hold off.
If the new A.T.I card is pants I may as well wait for the next refresh from nividia as the cards are 6 months old now.
Quad realy seems appealing after watching that last Crisis vid.

High K Metal gates and hafnium seem to come sooner than expected.

This will hit AMD hard on the server market.
Its hard to say if we really need Quad Core for Games. Recently I bought test drive unlimited, which looks superb, but is only singlethreaded.
But for servers: The more cores the better. AMD better doesnt keep on sleeping.

I few of the forums I use their have been a lot of complaints about recent batches of core 2's being rather bad at overclocking, so if you are planning on doing this it may be an idea to hold off until the new DDR 3 compatable ones show up. The suspicion is that the decent cores are being used for the Quads.
That is if you intend on overclocking.
I will wait a month or two until g.p.u's come down in price a bit. I may even buy a quad if the price is right, I have not yet recovered from seeing that Crisis vid and I suspect Quads will handle the physics rather well.

8600GT? You sure?

Not really, at least not the 256 mb version.
I think ATI will do alot better at mid range than Nvidia does.

Screw Amd, if this tunrs out to be true I want an Intel.
Quad Core @ 2.4 GhZ for less than 300 $ this summer.

Sorry AMD, but the empire strikes back.

Aye, and with the 2900xts in shops but only being around/or less performance as 8800GTS it doesn't look that great for AMD

The time for me to upgrade my rig draws closer. Dx 10 is just round the corner.
Lost planet is already out in demo on dx10, some initial benchies

If quad makes a diffrence in Crisis I may go for one myself. Not happy about getting a Nividia card, I want to usee vista 64 bit and prefer the drivers. Hopefuly we will see a proper high end card from A.T.I soon, which does not have the power, heat or noise issues and is capable of giving the other side a run for its money.
Looks like Dx 10 may need a bit of a beast under the hood.

The big question is if quad core make sense for games. This will differ from game to game.
Just threading particle effects is not enough.
Heres the way to do it right. Thread the big threads like batching:
“Like AMD, we too envision quad-core technology as an enabler of a more immersive experience,” said Phil Taylor, senior program manager of Aces Studio at Microsoft Game Studios. “Multi-core technology is already opening up a new world of significant possibilities with the Service Pack1 release for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. SP1 contains multi-threaded code for terrain loading and in-flight generation of terrain textures; as well as for the batching of Autogen vegetation and buildings. This code is written to allow SP1 to use all available cores. We are excited about AMD’s upcoming quad-core technology, which we believe will further enable our mutual customers to dial up the visual details when using SP1 and see more of the highly detailed world contained in FSX.”

Well getting a Intel 3 GHZ core 2 duo or a quad core 2,4 for 266$ on July 22 sounds very good. Maybe I should wait that long.
On the other hand there are rumors that the NDA for Penryn ends on July 15.
No matter what happens it looks like Intel will keep on hitting amd while they are down. :big_boxen
Keep in mind there will be no Phenom for desktops before Christmas time and I doubt that it can go head to head with Penryn, due to the slow clock speeds.

As you can read here vista can use up to 4 cores.

According to this article, intel will release its core 2 duo refresh (improved Front side bus, up to 3 gigahurts) tommorrow, along with price cuts.
Sounds good, but what will get me excited is penryn. Hope it comes soon.

Looks like penryn wont be that uber.
http://www.legitreviews.com/article/521/1/
Woohoo penryn benchmarks. Be aware that cinebench scales better with multiple cores than games do.
Some experts think that barcelona would score way better.
The return of the AMD knights?
