Looks like the top model of the next AMD generation, will only have 2,5 GHZ.
And top models tend to be very expensive.

Even with a better architecture, I doubt that an AMD K10 cpu at lets say 2.0 GHZ will be way faster than an Intel with 2.67 GHZ for the same price.

Maybe I have to join the Dark Side and buy an Intel as my next PC.

Do you think AMD does enough to win back the pole position as a price/performance leader?

It looks like my days with a.m.d are numbered  . Never thought of myself as a fanboy but I have been putting of upgrading for some time but my next rig will be Intel unless a.m.d are cutting prices dramatically.

I am sorting out cooling first, just got a side panel with a 250mm fan

and have just seen this

http://www.thermalright.com/a_page/main_product_ifx14.htm

2x 140 m.m CPU cooler. Air cooling does seem to be going a bit mad these days.

Hopefully next year will be the year of amd-ati with some really amazing product, which uses the strength of both companies. Buying a.t.i was an interesting move.

Anyway I need to go and fit a 140mm fan on the top of my rig.

You call 140 mm a fan?
This is a fan:

Btw, :welcome: , Octihead. Glad to have you on board.

Well according to these articles Intel will release Penryn based CPUs in the second half of 2007 (not 2008 as rumored). They promise high clock speeds (more than 3.0 GHZ) and a 40 % performance boost.

So whatever AMD does, they better do it quick.

I hope the AMD council does something about the Intel threat.

Oblivion Benchmark:
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2970&p=6

Finally, the new Mid Range DX 10 cards have arrived. I waited for ages for them to do so.

The last generation mid range Cards was not fast enough to run oblivion at max settings and good framerates (> 25 frames) outdoors.

But this generation can.

Hi, i was asked to sign up to this forum over at canadianice. So here i am :)

I just noticed about the mid range 8 series cards, my concern is the lowered memory bus, 128 bit seems to be a step backward. And the 8600 GTS is still quite expensive to say that it will be lower benchmark than cards out there that are dx9. Obviously the bonus is dx 10, but then will it be powerful enough to run those games very well?

Still oblivion performance looks decent with the GTS and GT.

Hi oxoltl,
thanks for heeding the call and showing up here.

You are right about the 128 bit memory bus. Its really a downside to the whole thing. We have to wait and see how these cards perform when heavy textures (like 2048 * 2048) are used in future games.

It s one step forward compared to the 7600 GT (performance wise and feature wise), but the 128 bit could become a bottleneck, if you want to play with highest texture settings and antialiasing.

Heh, I've never checked my PMs at Canadian Ice, I'll generally never see PMs unless the forum uses popups.

Anyway, I'm here!

Yeah, I wouldn't buy an 8600GTS even if I needed the upgrade. The 128-bit memory bus is just fail, I was personally concerned about how the 320MB 8800GTS would do in DX10 when it was announced, so this is grim unless DX10 isn't half as taxing as it looks. :?

:welcome: Kobakko

Yup the 128 bit memory interface is a classic bottleneck, but the GTS 320 MB isnt very useful for Games with High Res textures like UT 3, due to the 320 mb.

I hope that the Geforce 9600 will finally have a 256 bit interface.

i have been using the his ati radeon x1600turbo @587 clock speed and 1.38 ghz memory clock speed although theses are nice speeds for a card to be running @ its 128 gddr3 memory lets it down and would not recomend 128 mb to any one newer games and the need to free up system memory these days is important to many of us for instance to have a decent medium range pc just now would involve 1gb system memory and independant card running with 512 memory
