    POW WOWs
I'm not sure how many people here have experienced pow wows so I'm not sure how far this topic will go. Anyway, I just wanted to make a thread about it because it's fun to talk about and I love going to pow wows here in the US.

I have yet to experience one. Not sure if they are even held in Ohio, let alone the northern part of Ohio. I would love to visit one someday when I go to Florida. We are planning a trip there in a few years- still filling up the Distillata 5-gal bottle with silver. Once it's full- off to Middle-Florida we go!!

Unfortunately, I don't think they hold pow wow's in Australia *lol*

I would love to attend a pow wow one day.

yea, I've gone to them since I was a child, and I saw my first American Eagle at my first pow wow, everybody was in awe. I'm hoping to go to the Cherokee festival in May around my birthday, it's going to be really nice. There should be over a 100 dancers there, which would be the biggest pow wow I've ever gone to. Who knows i might even run into some long lost relatives there, that would be amazing!

I´ve been to a powwow in Canada - only a small one. I was invited to a really huge one with over 300 dancers (that would have been awesome) but decided not to go, this guy who would have given me a ride up there, was a bit strange and my friend said she couldn´t come with us. So I decided not to go to be on the save side ... this guy was really strange !!!

I´m sure that I will go to some powwows again ... Gathering of Nations is on my list !!! LOL

They do have powwows over here - but they are too different to the "real" powwows and I know that would get into fights with these "hobbyists" again - so I stay away. Just imagine: German people dressed up and playing Indian again ... no, that´s not what I need !!! They enjoy it, but I still don´t understand how a German can have the heart of an Indian!

Do you argue about it with the German "hobbyists" then?
    What do you tell them?

    Hey,

I remember I went to a pow wow last year in January called the Morning star pow wow, it was a benefit pow wow for St. labre Indian school in Montana. It was a memorable one, because I met a descendant of Sitting Bull and i didn't even know it at the time. My mom and I were at a vendor, and we were both wearing Native looking clothing and jewelry, this guy behind the vendor, says "Are you both dancers in the pow wow?" and I was a bit shocked to say the least, our first time being seen as Native americans...pretty interesting. This other younger native guy standing beside him says he likes my coat, and my mom starts talking him up about asking if he knows Lakota because I know the language, I was turning bright red at this point, because I had studied a little of the language but was too scared to say anything in Lakota to a native speaker. Anyway, I nervously giggle saying I don't really know much of it and the guy jokes saying to mom "She probably knows how to say "Hau Kola" and chuckles. Then he takes us over to sit with him and the other dancers at the arena. Months later, I'm talking to a friend of mine who gives me a website of a native dance theatre, and boom, there is the picture of the guy we were talking to his name is Delwin Fiddler, a direct descendent of Sitting Bull and then I saw another pic of him shaking hands with Rudy Youngblood from Apocalypto. I'm thinking, Whoa that's cool, Rudy is my favorite actor right now, he has a great talent. Sorry for the long post, I felt like blabbing. Small world huh.

Thanks for sharing that story. What does "Hau Kola" mean?

    @ evenstar
Yes, I always argue with these guys about not taking anything of that culture serious! They mix up the different clothes and tribes and don´t even know what they are wearing - it just looks good. They put feathers in their hair without even knowing about the meaning and stuff ... and they don´t care about the current situation of Native Americans, cause they "live" back in 1860. They even expect going to a reservation will be like going back in time ... not all of them, but most of them do. And their houses are decorated with tons of Native American "things" - most of it bought in Germany. It´s fine with me, if they would accept both sides - history and today´s life - but they are only interested in the past, cause it was sooooooooooooooooo romantic. Some of them do know a lot about historical facts and you really can´t say that they are all the same, but if I talk to someone and get something like "Pine Ridge was build up for tourists" I want to take their scalps ... ( if you know what I mean).
Or the people selling jeweleries: they tell people that they only do sell handmade items and that it´s unique. I was watching a woman paying a lot of money for some "very special" earrings. She was happy, cause she got told nobody else will have the same and when she turned around and walked away, the guy put the same earrings up on the table to sell them as unique again ... MADE IN ASIA      makes me so mad !!! It´s not fair to the customers and it´s even less fair to the Native Americans ... and the powwows it´s even the same. I mean it´s a showing of NA culture to make some money and people are not able to see the difference to a real powwow nor do they get told about the meaning of a powwow - these dancers don´t present the real Native American culture.

Thank you! Now we know and can speak a little Lakota! How do you say it right ?

newnativspirit wrote: Thank you! Now we know and can speak a little Lakota! How do you say it right ?

Haw Kola - you are saying Hello to a male friend
Haw Mushkay - you are saying Hello to a female friend.

Doe ksh kay ya oun hey? is How are you

    Waste is the word Good.

I've been studying some Lakota myself course I'm a little shy about still using it.

I have never been to a pow wow either but am hoping to go to one in South Dakota in Sept. St. Joes is having their annual one and my family has supported St. Joes for years and I want to go (provided I have the funds)

I'd really like to go to the All Nations but it's in 2 weeks - and I'm already going to Cherokee next week.

Hey, you need to save up for November !!!

I know a few words in Lakota. I think it´s a difficult language to learn! You need to think of the female and the male version all the time by using the right endings in questions - means the hwo or the he ... I can recognize it in a sentence, but I can´t speak. Only thing I sometimes say to my kids is "waste wincincala" (the letters should be written in a different way in Lakota, I know) and they look at me like "Mom, are you ok?"

I know what you mean. I've used the Haw Kola doe ksh kay ya oun hey (the line that Sean used when speaking to BlueBirds father and Waste. I've had people look at me like " " Haw mushkay (for a female)

I'm hoping to bring back some books on the Cherokee Language next week. Waste (which means good) I use all the time - then have to explain it.

Don't worry I'll be saving money for November

I can't believe this day is almost over with.

Yea, when I watch Into the West I can understand and pick out some of the words in a sentence and understand many of those short sentences like when Zahn (running fox) says " U wo" to Michael (dog star), or when Eddie (red lance) says "Taku mila hanksa?" to voices that carry. I get it, but the long drawn out conversations are like Huh?

The only way to become defeated is by saying something is too difficult to do, so I try to say to myself that learning lakota is easy.

This is true - I find myself picking up on some of what's being said in Dreamkeeper and ITW but, like you, the long conversations - are like Huh?

I'm going to bring back a book or two on the Cherokee Language when I return next weekend.

Yes, and to think it was only his first try (apocalypto).

I'm not the fanatic fan type, but I think it would be cool to see some actors at the Cherokee festival I plan on going to next month. I'd like to ask Rudy for acting tips. hehe

I know, his first film and he took to it like a duck to water! Some actors who have been making movies for years don't convey the depth he did in that film.

I'm not sure If I'll make it to the cherokee festival this monday, but I'll have to look up some other pow wows to attend this summer. I really would like to go to a really huge pow wow, with lots of dancers, the dancing is my favorite part. I'm itching to do the pow wow dancing one day, at least I can do grand entry. I don't know anyone to do the regalia and only know a little of buckskin women's traditional but I'll get there. It's a goal!! :D

I've been looking up PowWow's in Ohio, and there are a few listed in my area- but they are far enough away that I can plan ahead. I'm getting my garden ready now, and hopefully it will be a productive summer. It's been so cold here at night that the frost has stuck around and that's no good for most of the plants. Hopefully Hubby and I can take little one this summer to a PowWow- we'd stick out like cotton balls.

We do go to a thing called Old Trail Festival in August. It is a Pioneer type atmostphere where there are hand-crafters, bee keepers, quilters, tanners, woodworkers, etc. My husband loves to buy Grandma's Old Lye Soap- he has sensitive skin and it is just about the only stuff we can find that doesn't break his skin out.

I'm making plans to attend the one at St. Joes in Sept. It's in South Dakota! I have to fly into Sioux City and then drive for about 2 hours. Too South Dakota is about an 18 hour drive from Louisville....would not want to drive it by myself though.

I would dearly love to go to the All Nations in New Mexico but as the norm - I go by myself anymore...and that is a place I'd want to go with friends.

Also the Cherokee Language is a tad bit harder to learn that Lakota. At the museum they had an area where they actually went through the alphbet and boy was it different. I'm sure though given time and books one could speak it. :?
