get the heck outa dodge!!!
If i am not attacking i have my fleets on saveflight to another of my colonies at 10% speed and just have cargo ships at my colonies.
I also make sure i have trading posts (only if merchant) so i can hide 250k per lvl of resses.
Since i got the trading posts up the only time i have been attacked is when i overslept and my fleet got caught at home.
