Latest find on the former wartime airfield of Hunsdon is this aluminium plate. Measuring eight and a quarter inches by seven and a half inches. Stamped on it is ASSEMBLY 5059916. Any ideas as to what it could be?. It is not a de Havilland Mosquito part as this has been discounted already. Many other types were in service at Hunsdon though, including Douglas Havocs and Hawker Typhoons.

Hi Denis,
is it the complete number?
This number is not known for me...
Do you have search for a inspection stamp?
In the near of the number must be a round or oval inspection stamp !
Regards
Nils

Unfortunately there are no other stamps or marks on this part Nils. I Am sure it is off an aircraft of some type. It was found where many other parts were dumped after RAF Hunsdon closed in 1946.

OK, I found the first three digits on "Douglas SBD Dauntless" aircraft parts.
This part numbers begin beside other one with "505".
Do know something about this type on this airfield?
Nils

Hi Denis, a couple of questions.
1, am i right in thinking that the plate is flat at the bottom end and rounded at the top?
2, is there any sign of paint anywhere?
Interesting that you mention Douglas Havoc and Nils has a similar part number for a Douglas Dauntless.

Hello Roy,
No mate, it is perfectly square....or was when it was made. I did see the 505 listing as Nils mentioned. No Douglas SBD Dauntless were ever at Hunsdon though.
Are you both thinking this could be a generic part common to several types of Douglas aircraft?. I might just have found my first Havoc item :D

Denis, generic is possible. there were Royal Navy squadrons with the Dauntless tho. based at Wittering i think 700 and 787 squadrons FAA. i thought if part was from British A/C it might have traces of paint. i think all RAF FAA were in Camo. time wouldnt necessarily remove paint. i have parts of B17s still bright paint after 60+ yrs in the ground
