    Your real name
Some of you were thinking about telling each other our real names. You don´t have to do it, but it sounds interesting.

You all do know my name: Anne Schröder

... so who wants to be next?

I don´t mind you, if you don´t want to tell - I guess, that´s fine with everyone here.

    Re: Your real name

    Mela - 20.01.2007, 23:54

My real name is Mikaela. I do not want to tell you my last name here.

    Re: Your real name

    newnativspirit - 20.01.2007, 23:57

... and you don´t have to !!!! Did I ever tell you, that wonder how your name sounds in Swedish ... ? If you read it, you think of an Italien accent, but it probably sounds totally different - lol

    Re: Your real name

    Mela - 21.01.2007, 00:06

Here is another spelling of my name:Michaela.
I heard that name is really common in Germany. Is that true?

    Re: Your real name

    newnativspirit - 21.01.2007, 00:13

Yes, that´s a German "version" ... and the short form would be Michi - that´s the name of my brother´s gf and we are calling her Michi ...

    Re: Your real name

    Mela - 21.01.2007, 00:24

Most people have always called me "Mela" or "Mika".

    Re: Your real name

Do you know where this name comes from? I´ve never heard it before I met you ...

    Re: Your real name

    evenstar - 21.01.2007, 15:03

It's Latin and it means "Jewel" or "Gemstone". The more common spelling is "Gemma", but "Jemma" is the more modern version. Apparently it was very popular in Italian speaking areas in the early middle ages, and it's very commonly used in England and Wales now. I hardly knew anyone with the name growing up, but I meet a lot of them now!

I was named after my mothers Aunt and my second first name comes somewhere from my grandmothers side. I think it was her aunt or her grandmother. I'm not really sure, because we have a lot of Katherinas (well, yeah, Katherina is my second name... don't like it either) in our family.

I'm Karen- yeah, how boring is that? But it's simple and easy to spell. I love the name Katherina- so romantic. When you meet Simon some day, go by that name. It's very mysterious.

And btw, Karen is a form of Katherine, aka Katherina. So, we have yet one more thing in common. Oh, and I'm sure I've never told you this- but my heritage is 1/2 Irish, 1/4 English, and 1/4 German. And then some where in my past is a great-great-great grandfather who was either an African slave or a NA Slave. My family is at war on which it was. Half of them say one, the others say different. It all depends on which they dislike more- Blacks or Natives. I don't really care- they're still my peeps and I'm sure I would have loved them either way. I have medium to dark hair, and light brown eyes (they look like daisies to me :D ). My skin has a faint olive tone to it- and many people have asked me if I'm from Mediterrainian (sp??) descent. Of course, I'm sure I look more Greek than Jennifer Aniston does.

Well I'm tall (5'11) with long dark brown hair and green eyes.

My heritage is 1/4 English, 1/4 Irish. My mother's side has lived in Australia for many generations, but I believe they're of German descent. Apparently her maiden name is German anyway. My cousin did our family tree, and apparently we are distantly related to a Russian Zsar!

    Re: Your real name

    emerald - 27.01.2007, 17:09

Ok well since everyone is discussing heritage I'll give it a go:

I am of African, Native American, and European descent, so that makes me typically black in the U.S. but I don't forget my kin, so I acknowledge all of my heritage. I am very light skinned, I have bronze/brown hair, and am tall, just about 5'10 ft . :D

    Re: Your real name

    evenstar - 28.01.2007, 14:46

Hey, good to meet another tall girl! I'm 5'11. May I ask what you mean when you say it makes you "typically black"? I think it's great that you honour all of your heritage. I meet so many people who will only acknowledge part of it, and I really don't understand that!

    Re: Your real name

    emerald - 28.01.2007, 15:01

Ok, I'll explain that, besides African heritage most black people in the United States have one or both of native american and European ancestry as well, some have more or less of this ancestry than others. Most of this mix occurred during slavery time but regardless were still considered "Black" by European-Americans, which were and now still are the majority. But, like I said, I don't ignore my blood I embrace it all, but unfortuntely most people here still carry around the slave owner mentality on what defines "black".

I would love to know where I do come from ... lol ... but all I know from my granny is that "we" are all German from my mom´s family and from my father´s family I think we are German, too (just because he´s so very typical German - lol) - but I really would love to find out.
Years ago we got contacted by relatives living in the States. They did a family tree and finally found us ... at this time my mom had the idea to find out about our family as well and I wonder if she did ... I need to ask her

I would love to do a family tree - provided I could find the time. One of my cousins started one but I don't know if she ever finished it or not...she lives in a nother state. Maybe the next time I talk to her she can let me know if she finished it up.

no problem^^. I even had to write my A-level exams in politics about WW II. That's really depressing. That's why I don't like to call my heritage "german". But it's better teaching it at school that forget it and let the next generation repeat history. This shall never ever hapen again.!

    i agree

this is also a reason why i 'collect' a special series of Silver coins
every coin tells a part of WW II
like the Alliance flying in the air (freeing Holland) with on the backside White Doves as a sign of Peace
or 1 of ppl with newspapers (the 1st newspapers printed after being free'd)
with every coin you get a special item ,like a copy of that 1st printed newspaper

i decided to collect them ,cause i saw that many Youth already are not interrested in History anymore.
i wanted the new generation made by my family to know everything

The people around me are interested in history - no surprise for they are mostly restoration/conservation students. But I also try to teach the younger ones about our history. For especially Berlin was an important part of it and still has a lot of vestiges of that time. My grandfather always tells us how living was like in this time. It's up to us to keep it all in mind and being aware of the danger that still exists.

    Re: Your real name

    newnativspirit - 20.10.2007, 11:03

I´ve been to Dachau once and it was terrible! It was important to me to see it, although I already had a realistic idea of what it must have been like, but to go there almost killed me. It´s soooooooooo sad and it made me so angry. You really have to be strong to visit such a place - it´s not easy and it´s good that they are not trying to hide anything anymore, but I´m sure that the cruel stuff will never been showed - it´s good on one hand, because a lot of people wouldn´t be able to stand it. I remember that I was crying in Dachau.
I once asked my granny about this time and why they didn´t see what was going on and she said that they didn´t know about it at all ... after some time they started to think that something is going the wrong way, but nobody really knew what it was and the Hitler government was extremely good in hiding things from the public and just let them know what they wanted them to know. Plus my granny said that they had a much better life, because they had work and food. Maybe people didn´t want to realize what was going on - I don´t know. But I believe my granny. It was pretty rural where they were living, although Trier is only a 5 min. drive from there, but Trier wasn´t that big at this time and maybe people in rural regions didn´t get aware of things as much as people in cities like Munich, Hamburg and Berlin ... I have no idea. My granny survived two World Wars and I´m sure that she experienced a lot she didn´t want to - maybe she doesn´t want to remember everything. I would totally understand that. She must have some real bad memories of this time. No wonder people want to forget!

    Re: Your real name

    Liadan - 20.10.2007, 11:17

My grandfather also tells me stories. He had to join the "Hitler youth" - if people refused they were punished very, very hard. My grandfather hated it - especially the special haircut. He can't understand why some people today have it voluntarily. My grandmother was from Danzig. The city was closed it by Russians and my Granny and her sisters only could escape by ship. Since these days she paniced whenever a thunderstorm came. In the middle of the night she woke up my mom and dressed her ready to flee. I can' imagine what it's like living with all these fears - and I really don't want to know. there are no winners in war.

    Re: Your real name

    yep - so true!

    Re: Your real name

    eddiefever - 21.10.2007, 00:07

    very true indeed

for me it's really good to that Hitler forced many ppl to join his 'group'
cause it shows that not all Germans choose to support him. many were told to do so or they or their families would get tortured or worse : Killed
ofcourse you know it ,but to hear it from someone you know makes it more real ,you understand?

my grandmother told me stories alot
but when she did it was like she was re-living everything over again

she also couldn't believe that ppl shaved their heads voluntarely these days ,cause her's & everyone else is were shaved of in those camps
she's been in 3 camps. she started in Westenborg , (i think Dachau as wel )& ended in Auswitz. for 3 years
when she was freed ,she didn't have any family left
she was took in by friends of her family ,which went to live in The Netherlands
somehow her brother (who had fled the country just in time) found out where this family was & cause of that also where she was :)

some distant familymembers have gone to Auswitz & Westenborg and i can tell you
some have come out completely insane ,literally!!
cause a lot of bags ,shoes ,cloths & other items are still in those camps
1 of them saw the same shoe as a familymember had worn in that camp ( ofcourse there's a limited change that it was her's yet it lingers in your mind when you see it

the thing that sadness me the most is that my grandmother was afraid of Germany & Germans in general until the day she died
and she was soo scared that another war would occure
specially when Pim Fortyn came in our Parlement
he was balt & pretty Extreme
i remember that she warned us not to vote for him ,cause he was doing the same thing as Hitler did
taking over this country by using the youth
the fear in her eyes ,i'll never forget

also she always had lots of vegestabled in pots & potatoes and bottled water incase another war would start
she also got so sad when she heard that 1 of ehr children was havinga baby ,cause she kept on thinking ,what if a war would start & this baby is born. how can we keep it quite when we're hiding?
in the camp she had been there when a baby was taken away from it's mother ,that's what made her stay

    wel enough talk about war

Do you girls know what your name means ?
    mine means Hunny Bee :D
