First steps:
1) Develop a short history for your character.
Where was he born? Why did he leave home? Why did he choose his profession? His faction? Not all histories need be stories of hardship or disaster. Perhaps he is following in his father's footsteps and travelled to another planet to join the Empire like his father or older brother. Maybe he joined the Rebellion simply because he is a scout, values the freedom of the open country and feels the Empire is a threat to that freedom. Perhaps he desires wealth above all, or takes pleasure in the hunt with no regard for human life. The choice is yours, set your imagination free.....
2) Choose a personality.
This is a tough one. Most people find it difficult to impose a personality different than their own on a character. For example, you may be a professional fighter in real life with no fear of confrontation. Your character on the other hand, may cower before everyone that raises their voice. Is he brave, just, evil, honest, friendly, aloof, distant, outgoing, boisterous, cowardly, serious...and so on. Think of how they would act in certain situations based on those traits. Then play them out.
Be something unique. Perhaps your Commando is terrified of Womprats!! He'll face down a Krayt Dragon alone but runs in the opposite direction screaming every time a Womprat comes near. Perhaps he kicks the corpse of every Imperial he kills in a fit of rage until someone stops him. Maybe your entertainer talks to themselves in the Cantina, or is so clumsy they trip over their own feet when they dance. You like to tell stories of heroes in camp. Or perhaps stories about your own bravery which are so outrageous everyone just smirks and shakes their head.
You get my meaning....
3) Create a Profile.
The profile is what people see when they examine you. Many people put a biography/history type story in here. That's fine, at least you thought up a history. Preferably though, since nobody can really look at someone and get their life history, it might be better to use this to portray the impression other people get when they observe you. Are you intimidating, appear tough, angry, warm and fuzzy, have any scars, look dirty and battleworn, intelligence in the eyes or pure hatred etc. Save the history for around the campfire...if you're the sharing sort.
