    Instrument Modifications
Had to find some way to make this fit somewhere on the boards--as I knew these forums would be the best place for my friends to see my handiwork...

Start off with a question--John, have you ever modified any of your instruments? If so, how? The only modding I ever did of my 'bone was swap out for a mouthpiece with a larger bore...is anything else even possible??

Now, guitars and basses...the sky's the limit. Just got done modding my very first bass, for my 1-year anniversary since getting him and starting to play. Here's the before pics:

BOOORRRING white pickguard and knobs *snore*, bog-standard nickel roundwound strings (rather reliable ones, mind), standard strap buttons which allowed for easy bass escape *cringe* and an unsightly wood gouge from when he was dropped on a stage by a previous owner--hence his name, Chip. (Yes. I name my instruments. See signature if there's any questions. )

    Now:

Custom blue pearl pickguard from WD Music, blue pearl-topped chrome knobs from California CustomAx, Schaller straplocks, and DR Extra Life Peacock Blue strings.

And a bit of putty n' paint TLC. The job wasn't perfect, but it's much better than it was... now you have to LOOK for the flaw.

Now Chip LOOKS as funky as he sounds!!!!!! Plus those strings give a bit of extra punch to the sound, being coated stainless steel.

Anyone else done any instrument modding here?

    *crickets chirping*

Sorry...I just had to show 'im off. Among friends, natch.

This topic has been sitting on its own for a while. I can't help myself and thought I would add some, unrelated comments.

I was reading in my local paper recently that many school student are being ripped off, buying cheaper, imported musical instruments. However, aren't lasting five minutes before they break.

Cheap and nasties by the sounds of things. I would imagine it is difficult for school students to get thier hands on the money for the cheapies, let alone forking out for better quality tools.

Must be a bit of a challenge for school aged students, parents, teachers alike. Not sure what the answer is.

Musical instruments are definitely not cheap...not a hobby for the destitute, it seems. But for some company to build something that doesn't even hold up for any length of time...that's just wrong. I mean, I've come across cheapER instruments that, because they use lower-quality materials, obviously don't measure up to more expensive versions--but they're still quite serviceable. Case in point: the bass above. It's a Made in Mexico Fender Precision. The frets are not top-grade fret wire, the pickup wiring not as well done or shielded like the Made in America basses...but it still WORKS. I can coax good tone out of it no problem, and as for it lasting--it's a '92-'93 model and got dropped on a stage once. Still thumps like a moogerfooger. 'Nuf said.

And it only set me back $60 initially. But I did sink some funds in since. Worth it though.

I know there's programs in the States to get instruments in the hands of needy kids and school programs...wonder if there's anything like that in Oz?

Life should not have to go without music.

Thanks Shannon. Interesting stuff. Sounds like they just need to do a bit of digging to find some half decent instruments. But they probably just panic at the start of the school year and have to get their hands on the intruments quick.

I'm not sure what goes on in Australian schools, musically. No need to know, really. :D Although, my neice did hire a Sax from her school when she was there. Then when she left school, her mother brought her a Sax, which he has hardly used since. Dust collector, I guess. Shame, really.

Talking of Sax, listening to the radio going home yesterday. Did you know the Sax was invented by Sax ~1841 and patented in 1846. He also redesigned the bass clarinet. Got a lot of musicians off side in his day due to his re-working some instruments (for they better, they say), putting many musicians out of work. These musicians created a union to work against Sax. For more Sax trivia see:

And have a try of the quiz.

    Cheers
    Pat

Cool info on the sax, Pat! Interesting lecture. I got 7 of 8 right on the quiz.

Sax sounds so cool...don't know if I could ever play one though. Last time I tried doing clarinet (very similar mouthpiece), it sounded like I was torturing a rubber duck.

I defo want to pick up the albums by the Nuclear Whales Saxophone Orchestra though. That bass sax is a trip!!!!! :D
