So, what is it about music??????
What is it about music that turns us on? Soothes us. Helps us cope. Gives us pleasure. :?: And may , on occasion produce negative feelings. :(

I'm sure many a scholar has received a grant to look into this phenomenon.

For me, going through the usual childhood illnesses, I was made to stay in bed with my big sisters radio. Mostly to keep out of my mothers way, I guess, as she went about her daily chores.

Because of this, I become heavily influenced by the Mersey sounds of the 60's. When I hear them today, it takes me back. Are they taking me back to better times? I'm not too sure about that. :?: This also gave me my love of the English musical sounds and styles.

Music can take us back to what we sometimes think are better times. Past relationships. Life experiences.

My Old English Sheepdog's kennel name was Serenvale Howzat!. He was born when the Sherbert song Howzat! was making a blast on the radio. And the rest of the litter were named after songs on the Top 40 at the time. U2's Beautiful Thing, reminds me of my Bessie ( my cross Ridgeback) 'cause I always called her my beautiful thing.

I was listening to the harmonies of Lennon/McCartney today. Sitting there listening out for Lennon, then trying to pick Paul's voice. A brilliant pairing.

Music is just an amazing thing. It can take us in so many different directions, depending on why we are listening, what we are listening to and how we are listening. Sometimes we have it on and aren't listening at all. Or so we think................. What about that song that gets stuck in your head and you hate it by the end of the day.

A truly interesting subject. Many perspectives. Could talk about this for days on end, me thinks. :P

Will wax poetic on this topic soon...head home from the school hols tomoz...got some stuff to do before starting classes this week. Be back to this ASAP. :D

    EDIT: OK, back.

I like examining what drives us toward PARTICULAR types of music. I think our environment shapes that to some degree (what was blasting in the house growing up), but I also seriously think that we're all "programmed" to march to the beat of a different drummer, as it were. I think, if one were to analyze all the music they own, certain keys, tempos, and rhythms would consistently emerge. I seem to favor minor keys...haven't examined tempos yet, but should. :D

What shaped my particular musical passion and taste, environmentally:

The passion came from my parents, I think. Music was forever being cranked in that house--and it was the only thing they really encouraged me to get into. Wanted a new LP--got it. Wanted a new stereo system (after wearing the old one out)--no problem. Wanted to join band--didn't get the "you'll never practice" lecture most kids get, I got "which instrument?" It was really the only thing that bonded us. Ma played flute through high school and listened to the likes of The Guess Who, Three Dog Night and Badfinger; Dad played bass before marrying Ma and listened to Hendrix and Deep Purple. Those two gave me my rock roots; I'll never shake those.

Ironically, what created the only bond between myself and my parents was also my refuge from them...whenever the fights (sometimes involving me) got rolling, I'd usually storm off to my room, slam the door, and crank my stereo to distortion level to drown them out. Music kept me SANE under that roof...

Kept my brother sane too, I guess...it's so cool now to see how much of his collection is based on what he heard through his bedroom wall all those years (his room was right next to mine and usually on the back end of the sound system!!). I thoroughly enjoyed our drive down here yesterday; he'd burned a CD full of stuff for the drive and we were howling along TOGETHER on several tracks. :D

Music has continued to be a huge force in my life, with the exception of the "dark years" with my ex. It was like being born again when I rediscovered my SR fandom and music in general. I've made very close friends because of SR...so it's gone beyond the music to some wonderful places indeed.

As I say on my LiveJournal profile, I believe in music and laughter as the most powerful universal languages. I don't see anything else with such influence.
