    Das Ende von Dime& Co!?
    Leider in englisch:

It's Getting Harder and Harder to Enjoy & Share the Music
I am a member of the DimeADozen Yahoo Group, and here is an email we were sent (names, of course, not mentioned):

    Quote:

I finally located another satellite provider, HiSpeedAnywhere.com, and this time I was a lot more educated about what I wanted to know about their service! The key, of course, is torrenting. If I can't upload and download music, I have no need for high speed access.

So I just asked this guy what about it? Is it allowed? Do you practice any throttling tactics? Do you have a fair access policy, and what is it? etc etc etc

At least I can say he was honest. He didn't try to sell me something that would be useless to me. He flat out told me they do NOT allow torrenting. They of course can tell who is torrenting and who is not. He then said that bittorrent is "going away, very soon, even with DSL and cable providers. Very soon no one will be torrenting." Some providers have already blocked all torrent activity, like this HiSpeedAnywhere outfit. As we all know, more and more providers are practicing some type of throttling tactic to limit torrenting.

In my case, my ability to UPload has dropped to ZERO. Nothing I do has helped. For the first time since joining DIME, my ratio has fallen below 1.0. So I was certainly hoping to find another provider that would at least allow me to upload. And if I couldn't, the only other option would be for me to jump into the "create your own torrent" lake, and upload shows myself. But of course, if all torrenting is blocked, there will be no DIME to upload TO. And even if DIME survives, my OWN ability to upload is gone, so even upping my own torrents won't work.

Oh, and I should mention I live in the U.S., so your mileage will obviously vary depending on where you live.

What do you folks think of that guy's statements about the "end of bittorrent"? Sounds like armageddon to me! But is it true?? It's without question true with HiSpeedAnywhere! Anyone have an opinion, or an alternate view? Insider news on the subject? Are we back to snail mailing? ughhhh I'd rather everyone go ahead and upload all of their Emmylou Harris shows right now! :-)

I'd love to hear some feedback.

And now I'm hearing rumors (offline, so far), that trading sites, trading Yahoo and Google Groups, and things like this are also being put down on lists for investigation. And it's all starting with torrents.

Supposedly, those loopholes in the boots laws that allowed the sharing of bootlegged and even official music are being closed by the MPA and the NMPA. Which means, maybe in a few years, this is it for everyone.

No more Zep, no more Hendrix, no more G'N'R, no more Phish, no more Nirvana, no more Free, and, yes, if what I've been hearing is right, they'll even outlaw the sharing of Grateful Dead boots, as, apparently, the remaining members no longer support them. Unless, of course, you shell out the money to buy it all.

Now, of course, this email to the DimeADozen group was the first online confirmation of these rumors I've been hearing. So none of this (except maybe torrenting) is definite. So far it is still rumor, and, in a way, even better, I have yet to see anything about it online, though it may be because I'm not looking hard enough.

But either way, what would it mean to y'all personally if the loopholes were closed and online sharing was out of the question? You may still be able to do it, but it'd have to be by email, and then the emails couldn't say anything that would make it look like you're sharing music, and then... Well, you'd have to be as secretive about it as you can, which would be a pain.
