I was excited like never before. It was the second time I was going to see Mando Diao live on stage. I’m a huge fan of them. I saw them at the Rock am See festival 2006 for the first time live on stage. Then I promised myself that I’ll go to one of their concerts on their next tour because they did such an awesome and powerful show.
Well, Mando Diao is a band from Borlänge, Sweden. Gustaf and Björn are the lead singers, songwriters and guitarists, CJ is the bassist, Sam plays the drums and Mats is their keyboarder.
Then I saw that they’re going to play in Leipzig! That’s my home town! I told it to my friend Katie and we decided to go to the show together. So I went to a ticket shop to get our tickets. Now I was excited like never before. Only a few days later we both saw that they’re going to play in Berlin too. That’s only 200 kilometres (about 150 miles) away from Leipzig! We immediately decided to go to their show there too. So I bought these tickets too. My god, I was so nervous about those two concerts!!! I started listening to Mando Diao nearly every day. Their music is sooo great! Just perfect.
4 days before their concert my friend Katie arrived in Leipzig. She lives in Singen in South Germany. We had a few nice and funny days. Then, finally, it was Saturday, the day of the concert. We said that we want to try to meet the guys before the concert and before we entered the concert hall. So we had to be there very very early, that means 6 hours before the concert started. Around 2 pm we were there…finally! We went to the backstage entrance immediately and – shit – the tour buses were already there. Now we have to wait for another 6 hours. That sucks! But we decided to stay near the backstage entrance. Perhaps one of the guys came outside and we got the chance to meet them. You never know. Then, about 3 hours later, we saw a few guys standing near the buses. Katie was like, “Isn’t that Björn from Mando Diao?” And I was like, “I don’t know. I can’t see him that good.” Well, this guy stared at us and we stared at him. It was funny. Then he, 3 other guys and a girl left the backstage area to go for a walk, we thought. You know, I’m a curious girl. So we decided to walk towards them and look who it was. We turned around a corner and – OH MY GOD – this guy who stared at us was Björn! CJ, one of his band members, was with him too! We NEVER expected anything like that. It was unbelievable. Björn and CJ smiled at us but we couldn’t say anything. This surprise, meeting them in the park, was a bit too big to deal with. I had to sit down…quickly! Very quickly! We saw the guys walk away in the park. I think they did it to relax a bit before their show later the day. In the next minute I grabbed my cell phone to call my friend Elli who we wanted to meet later to go to the concert together. Whoa, she was excited! She really couldn’t believe that we saw two of the guys just a few seconds ago! Katie and I decided to go for a walk too. Perhaps there was a chance to talk to them. You never know. We both noticed that Björn looked at us and smiled nearly all the time. The girl who was with the guys was his girlfriend! And he started flirting with us! That was a bit…well, crazy. When they entered the backstage area again, they looked at us and smiled again. Whoa, that was awesome! Then we went to the other entrance where we waited before. It got later and later and none of our friends arrived. So we decided to go to the tram station. We noticed two guys who walked on the towards us. One of them had blonde hair, the other one had brown hair. I was like, “Katie, I think those are the guys from Johnossi. But I don’t know it exactly.” She didn’t answer anything. I just looked at them again, then we went away. A few minutes later they passed us again. I still thought they’re Johnossi but I wasn’t sure. I only saw them on pics and not live. That’s a big difference. Well, we saw the guys walking towards the backstage entrance. Then I was totally sure. These guys were Johnossi! I really couldn’t believe that! I met band members from two of the three bands I’ll see in a few hours and I didn’t talk to them! My god, I was so stupid. Well, Katie and I went to the backstage entrance too. As I told before, we wanted to meet friends there. We wouldn’t do that in front of the club because there were so many people and we didn’t know each other pretty good. We were a few girls who meet on the Mando Diao boards for the first time. Then we decided to meet before the concert, just for fun. About 6 pm we went to the front doors. There were about 200 people standing there, waiting for the admittance which would start at 7 pm. So we stood there, freezing and waiting for the concert. Finally it was 7 pm and we were allowed to go inside. All of a sudden a girl handed me a card which looks like a backstage pass! I was a bit confused then. But it was only advertising for the main support Razorlight. Then we walked towards the stage quickly. We stood somewhere between the 10th and 15th row. Nice place, I thought. Finally it was 8 pm and Johnossi went on stage. I NEVER expected such a good show from those two guys. They’ve only a drummer called Ossi and a guitarist and lead singer called John. They rocked the stage! I heard them in myspace and on their homepage but there they didn’t sound that good! I was so surprised about them. AWESOME was all I could think. And the singer of them grinned at me and my friend. You know, we met them on the street earlier and they remembered us. Awesome! Katie, my friend, wanted to drink something after a few songs. It was not the best air in this club and there were too many people. So she went to the bar to drink something. But I stayed at the place I was. Right in front of the stage, in the middle. There was a big mosh pit around me and I got into it too. But that wasn’t a problem. I love mosh pits. 35 minutes later Johnossi went offstage unfortunately. Then there was a break, about 20 minutes long. The fans got closer and closer in the first rows and I knew that I’d have a lot of bruises after the concert. About 9 pm it got dark all of a sudden. Everybody knew that Razorlight, the main support of Mando Diao, would come on stage now. Their lead singer looked a bit strange in his very tight white jeans and his tight white t-shirt. After a few of their songs I thought to myself, ‘when will they start with their concert?’ I really wondered why they were that bad on stage. They sound much better when you listen to their music on CD or on TV. Then their lead singer took his shirt off. That was the best of the whole appearance of Razorlight even if this guy wasn’t really sexy in my eyes. About 40 minutes later, when they left the stage, I thought, ‘Okay, that was it? That was the awesome band Razorlight? Oh my god!’ They were really bad! Johnossi did such a great show and even if nearly nobody knew them they made everybody having fun. Then Razorlight went onstage and destroyed this great feeling. I can say I was glad that they left the stage. One reason: they were bad. The second reason: I was thirsty like never before but I decided not to drink anything. I stood right in front of the stage and I really won’t go away there. The third reason: I was exhausted. Really exhausted. My shirt was so wet! It was like I washed it but forgot to dry it. It was only one and a half hour later. My god! And Mando Diao will enter the stage soon. I can’t get wetter. What will happen then? Am I going to pass out? Will I survive this? Oh, I really don’t know. At this time I didn’t know where Katie was. As I told you before, she went to the bar to drink something. But she’d have a surprise for me. I’ll tell you more later. I talked to a girl who stood next to me, just for fun. She was at the concert in Munich one day before. She told me that Mando Diao would be on stage for 1 hour and 50 minutes! OH MY GOD! I was shocked! I thought they’d play for about one and a half hour. But not that long! Oh god! Now I asked myself again: will I survive this concert? Well, I started talking to a few other girls then and I hadn’t more time to think about this. A little while later a white curtain was hanged up between the stage and the crowd. So we couldn’t see what happened on stage. That was really confusing! I thought to myself that it couldn’t take much time now until the guys would come on the stage. And I was right! A little while later, I think it was about 10 minutes, it was dark in the club from one second to the other. Then I could see some guys onstage but because of this curtain I could only see shadows. With the first beats of “Welcome Home, Luc Robitaille” everyone went crazy and the concert started. It was awesome! With the first chorus this white curtain fell to the ground suddenly and everyone could see Mando Diao onstage for the first time this evening. I thought they looked good on every pic but if you see them live they look even better! I could see five hotties on stage. Awesome! They caught me in their world called “Ochrasy” with the first songs. Ochrasy is a world Björn, one of the singers and guitarists, created. He said that this is the time between 2 am and 6 am where the guys from Mando Diao could relax and sit at a bar to drink something. That’s their own world and Björn called it Ochrasy. After about 6 or 7 songs I decided to drink something. I went to the bar, bought a cup of water and sat down on the floor for a little while. Suddenly a girl sat down next to me. Then I noticed that it was one of my friends we met before the concert. We lost each other at the beginning of the whole concert, now we’re back together. Awesome.
“Hey, what do you think? Want to stand in the first 5 rows?” I asked my friend after a few minutes.
She looked at me surprised but she said, “Yes, for sure.”
So we stood up and walked towards the stage. I grabbed my friends hand just to be sure she won’t get lost. I never thought it would be that easy to pass all the people in a club with about 3500 fans. But it was totally easy. Some stupid girls hit me with their elbows but that didn’t bother me. I had an aim. I wanted to stand in front of the stage again. So I did it. My friend was surprised about how easy it was to do something like this.
“Hey, how did you do this?” she asked still surprised.
“Just keep walking and don’t stop. And wait for the mosh pit. Then it’s easy because everyone takes care of himself” I answered.
I saw that she thought about it. All of a sudden, in between the next song, she grabbed my hand and pulled me with her. Then we stood in the 3rd row! Wow! How amazing was this??? We stood nearly in front of the stage! In the middle! Wow! It was even more fun now. I got in a very big mosh pit after a while. I never expected anything like that. Mosh pit okay, but not that big! It was with about 100 people! Mando Diao really is no “mosh pit music” in my opinion. But I didn’t notice that other people hit me again and again. I was totally lost in Ochrasy and the guys on stage and their show on stage. I just looked to the stage and I didn’t notice anything what happened next to me. I was lost…completely lost. Lost in this powerful and amazing show of those 5 cute guys on stage, lost in the feelings and the passion they showed on stage, lost in their own world, lost in their music. But I still could think so far that I looked for my friend sometimes. With their last song I felt that I wasted away. I knew that I have to drink something immediately. Otherwise I’d pass out. But that was definitely not what I wanted. With a heavy heart I decided to go to the bar. I bought something to drink again and sat down. After a little while I wanted to stand up to look at the stage from nearly the last row but I couldn’t do it. My legs were shaking like never before and I sat down again, just to be sure not to fall to the ground. I waited there for my friends. We said that we’d meet near the bar after the concert to wait together near the backstage entrance to get some autographs. After this we’d like to have our own after show party. But we didn’t know how exhausted everyone of us would be after the concert. It was crazy. I never was that exhausted after such a concert. I survived a concert with about 15000 people and this day it was only one fifth! Katie found me sitting on the floor a little while later. She told me that she stood in the front row! How did she manage this?!?! I was so jealous at her for a few seconds! Then she told me that Gustaf, Björn and CJ shook hands with the fans in the first rows after the concert!!! OH MY GOD!!! I thought I'd die!!! I missed this chance?!?! How stupid was I to leave the 3rd row nearly at the end of the concert?!?! Then Katie told me that Björn and CJ smiled at her because they remembered her. You know, we met them in the park before the concert. Oh god, I was so mad at myself...well, okay. Katie and I went outside to wait at our second meeting point near the bus station. But we stopped in front of the club to buy some posters of our beloved Mando guys. Now I noticed that my ribs were hurting like hell. Someone smashed his elbow into my ribs…ouch! But they were not broken, for gods sake. After meeting our friends again, some of them wanted to go back to their hotel to relax a bit. Katie, I and a few other girls wanted to drink something in a bar. But they didn’t want to go to the backstage entrance together with us. So Katie and I went there alone and sat down on the street because we knew we had to wait for a while. But only a little while later we saw some guys walking outside the cluc. Our Mando guys! We waited and hoped that they’d come to us and the other fans to sign some stuff. But they were that exhausted and tired after a two hours power show that they wanted to enter the bus immediately to get some sleep. Understandable, eh? But the other fans wouldn’t accept this. They noticed that there was no fence next to the gate and they all ran towards the bus like some crazy girls! Unbelievable! But they didn’t get their autographs and pictures. They were sent away immediately. We only heard that they were shouting and discussing and scolding. My god, how stupid can people be??? It was the backstage entrance, a area which you couldn’t walk through like you want. It was a private area for those guys. It’s just normal that those groupies were sent away. Unfortunately we didn’t get our autographs. But that wouldn’t be a problem. We wanted to go to the concert in Berlin two days later and there would be a signing hour before the concert. There we could get what we want. So it was okay with us. We met some of our friends then and we drove to my home first. We wanted to look up in the internet where we could do something now. it was about 1:30 am. At 2 am we left to go to a little bar to drink something and talk about the concert and other stuff. But Katie and I didn’t stay very long. It was about 3:30 am when we left this bar to go home and get some sleep. We both fell asleep with the memory of a very very good concert and the thought that we would see those guys the next day again.
