    The English Site
    Okidoki guys. I thought it would be fun if we do a site in English. Just for fun, you know. We can talk about everything, but there is not a single German word permitted. If you go against that law you will be punished :lol: , very badly :lol:

    Re: The English Site

    Re: The English Site

    Lotti - 21.12.2006, 23:26

    Doesn't look like it. So, lets see what we can do then. How about creating a story in English?

    Re: The English Site

    obi - 22.12.2006, 18:41

    NOPE there is a german thread with that topic....

    Re: The English Site

    Lotti - 22.12.2006, 20:15

    Well, but in English it would be different. Nevermind though, if you don't want to. Today in Latin, I tought some guys to say merry christmas and a happy new year in German. They all can't pronounce the "ich" sound. Totally funny if you hear them.

    Re: The English Site

    cesarius - 22.12.2006, 20:38

    You have Latin?? oh, your are damned!!

    Re: The English Site

    j-freak - 23.12.2006, 00:09

    yes, really.... why did you want to go on with latin?

    Re: The English Site

    Lotti - 23.12.2006, 02:06

    Well, if you do it untill level 3 you get a Latin degree and that helps if you want to get into medical school, and it helps a lot with English, because we translate from Latin to English. Like sentence structure and that kind of stuff. My Latin teacher is sooooo funny, it's more hi, who is funny rather what he's doing.

    Re: The English Site

    Lotti - 24.12.2006, 02:38

    Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone. Hope you all get a mountain of presents and have a wonderful time with your family and friends. :D

    Re: The English Site

    Lotti - 29.12.2006, 20:11

    by the way, it's boring and not borring.
    I like the idea. It would be a lot of fun. It doesn't have to be something with fantasy, it could be novel style too.

    Re: The English Site

    Lotti - 16.05.2007, 00:37

    That's nice to hear. I bet that you guys are better in grammar then I am. i just don't get it. It's the same in German. Do you also have a written English test?

    Re: The English Site

    Leloli - 16.05.2007, 14:22

    What are you thinking ab out us?!?!?!?!?!?!

    Re: The English Site

    Who knows?

    Re: The English Site

    Dr. DR - 21.06.2007, 22:49

    In my opinion everyone is making a too big deal of this MSA. I reckon nobody will ever care what grades we had in the 10th grade. But as Mr Brandes told us just a few days ago, nobody failed the math examen and I think for the most of us, that was the worst, wasn't it?

    (I just recognized that we've got an English site. It's a great idea.)

    Here in Canada you have to pass a literacy test and math exam in order to get your high school diploma. Believe it or not, every year more than 5 people fail it. The literacy test was really easy, even for me. I just don't get it how somebody who spoke and wrote english since kindergarten can fail such an easy test. I guess you have to be really stupid.

    Re: The English Site

    Dr. DR - 22.06.2007, 18:50

    Sorry, but I don't get it. Which exam do they fail? I assume the literacy test. 5 people in Canada? 5 people in Toronto? 5 people at your school?
    Or did you mean something like 50,000?
    I think, in Germany more than 5 people fail the MSA every year.

    Lotti - 22.06.2007, 22:36

    At my school only. I don't know about the numbers in whole Canada. And I don't know which test they fail. My science teacher just told me that 5 students at my school failed one of them last year, and that it's every year about that many students that fail. Usually, everyone gets a second try, if you failed.

    Re: The English Site

    Dr. DR - 22.06.2007, 23:27

    Understood. What about some English(American) poetry in here? Well, I won't wait for the answer...

    The Shooting of Dan McGrew

    A bunch of the boys were whooping it up in the Malamute saloon;
    The kid that handles the music-box was hitting a jag-time tune;
    Back of the bar, in a solo game, sat Dangerous Dan McGrew,
    And watching his luck was his light-o'-love, the lady that's known as Lou.
    When out of the night, which was fifty below, and into the din and glare,
    There stumbled a miner fresh from the creeks, dog-dirty, and loaded for bear.
    He looked like a man with a foot in the grave and scarcely the strength of a louse,
    Yet he tilted a poke of dust on the bar, and he called for drinks for the house.
    There was none could place the stranger's face, though we searched ourselves for a clue;
    But we drank his health, and the last to drink was Dangerous Dan McGrew.

    There's men that somehow just grip your eyes, and hold them hard like a spell;
    And such was he, and he looked to me like a man who had lived in hell;
    With a face most hair, and the dreary stare of a dog whose day is done,
    As he watered the green stuff in his glass, and the drops fell one by one.
    Then I got to figgering who he was, and wondering what he'd do,
    And I turned my head--and there watching him was the lady that's known as Lou.

    His eyes went rubbering round the room, and he seemed in a kind of daze,
    Till at last that old piano fell in the way of his wandering gaze.
    The rag-time kid was having a drink; there was no one else on the stool,
    So the stranger stumbles across the room, and flops down there like a fool.
    In a buckskin shirt that was glazed with dirt he sat, and I saw him sway,
    Then he clutched the keys with his talon hands--my God! but that man could play.

    Were you ever out in the Great Alone, when the moon was awful clear,
    And the icy mountains hemmed you in with a silence you most could hear;
    With only the howl of a timber wolf, and you camped there in the cold,
    A helf-dead thing in a stark, dead world, clean mad for the muck called gold;
    While high overhead, green, yellow, and red, the North Lights swept in bars?--
    Then you've a hunch what the music meant...hunger and might and the stars.

    And hunger not of the belly kind, that's banished with bacon and beans,
    But the gnawing hunger of lonely men for a home and all that it means;
    For a fireside far from the cares that are, four walls and a roof above;
    But oh! so cramful of cosy joy, and crowded with a woman's love--
    A woman dearer than all the world, and true as Heaven is true--
    (God! how ghastly she looks through her rouge,--the lady that's known as Lou.)

    Then on a sudden the music changed, so soft that you scarce could hear;
    But you felt that your life had been looted clean of all that it once held dear;
    That someone had stolen the woman you loved; that her love was a devil's lie;
    That your guts were gone, and the best for you was to crawl away and die.
    'Twas the crowning cry of a heart's despair, and it thrilled you through and through--
    "I guess I'll make it a spread misere," said Dangerous Dan McGrew.

    The music almost dies away...then it burst like a pent-up flood;
    And it seemed to say, "Repay, repay," and my eyes were blind with blood.
    The thought came back of an ancient wrong, and it stung like a frozen lash,
    And the lust awoke to kill, to kill...then the music stopped with a crash,
    And the stranger turned, and his eyes they burned in a most peculiar way;

    In a buckskin shirt that was glazed with dirt he sat, and I saw him sway;
    Then his lips went in in a kind of grin, and he spoke, and his voice was calm,
    And "Boys," says he, "you don't know me, and none of you care a damn;
    But I want to state, and my words are straight, and I'll bet my poke they're true,
    That one of you is a hound of hell...and that one is Dan McGrew."

    Then I ducked my head and the lights went out, and two guns blazed in the dark;
    And a woman screamed, and the lights went up, and two men lay stiff and stark.
    Pitched on his head, and pumped full of lead, was Dangerous Dan McGrew,
    While the man from the creeks lay clutched to the breast of the lady that's known as Lou.

    These are the simple facts of the case, and I guess I ought to know.
    They say that the stranger was crazed with "hooch," and I'm not denying it's so.
    I'm not so wise as the lawyer guys, but strictly between us two--
    The woman that kissed him and--pinched his poke--was the lady that's known as Lou.

    How stupid do you think am I? Google, the shooting of Dan McGrew, and there it is. I found a shortened version of it in an Uncle Scooge comic (by Don Rosa)

    Two households, both alike in dignity,
    In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
    From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
    Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
    From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
    A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life;
    Whole misadventured piteous overthrows
    Do with their death bury their parents' strife.
    The fearful passage of their death-mark'd love,
    And the continuance of their parents' rage,
    Which, but their children's end, nought could remove,
    Is now the two hours' traffic of our stage;

    Hm... :?
    Give me time to think about it... :? :? :?
    ...
    ...
    ...
    :idea:
    Ah..., something by Shakespeare! Am I right?
    But what? :?
    :?: :?: :?:
    A strife is mentioned... Everything that Shakespeare wrote is about some kind of "strife"...
    Okay, let's see... two deaths, hm?
    Hamlet?
    ???
    No! I think we've got something like 6, 7, 10 deaths there.
    :?
    A couple... Much Ado about Nothing? No, can't be. That's a comedy...
    :?:
    Somehow it seems, as if this isn't a comedy.
    :idea:
    MacBath :!: (äh..., sorry "Beth" of course)
    Hm, no... Doesn't look MacBethish, does it?
    :? :? :?
    :?: :?: :?:
    :idea: :idea: :idea:
    Ah, I know it... Let me think... What's the name? What's the name?
    Argh, I know it! But WHAT'S THE NAME??? Something with... something. Shakespeare's ... something. There are two young people and their name is... äh... something. Ähm...
    :?: :?: :?:
    Okay, I surrender. Please tell me!

    It's a play by Shakespeare, that's right.
    Well, the two first lines give it already away.
    Two Housholds!
    Think hard!
    If that doesn't help, then what about Verona?
    Two Housholds and Verona really should give it away.
    I give you one more try.

    Correct! 10 points for that one because it took you a while.
    Here is the next one:

    ull of vexation come I, with complaint
    Against my child, my daughter Hermia.
    Stand forth, Demetrius. My noble lord,
    This man hath my consent to marry her.
    Stand forth, Lysander: and my gracious duke,
    This man hath bewitch'd the bosom of my child;
    Thou, thou, Lysander, thou hast given her rhymes,
    And interchanged love-tokens with my child:
    Thou hast by moonlight at her window sung,
    With feigning voice verses of feigning love,
    And stolen the impression of her fantasy
    With bracelets of thy hair, rings, gawds, conceits,
    Knacks, trifles, nosegays, sweetmeats, messengers
    Of strong prevailment in unharden'd youth:
    With cunning hast thou filch'd my daughter's heart,
    Turn'd her obedience, which is due to me,
    To stubborn harshness: and, my gracious duke,
    Be it so she; will not here before your grace
    Consent to marry with Demetrius,
    I beg the ancient privilege of Athens,
    As she is mine, I may dispose of her:
    Which shall be either to this gentleman
    Or to her death, according to our law
    Immediately provided in that case.

    I admit, this one is a bit hard. Therefore you will have 2 tries.

    The second one... Let's see...
    Is it also Shakespeare? Is possible... "This man hath my consent to marry her..." sounds very shakespeareish.
    Demtetrius, Lysander, Hermia... Athens

    I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I already solved it.......................................

    A Midsummer Night's Dream

    And now something which is really diificult (if you haven't read the play) Only one line...

    By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.

    If you can't solve it, I'll give you a hint.

    Re: The English Site

    Lotti - 26.06.2007, 18:33

    This one is really hard, if you don't know the play yet. Let's see how good you are.

    O, that this too too solid flesh would melt
    Thaw and resolve itself into a dew!
    Or that the Everlasting had not fix'd
    His canon 'gainst self-slaughter! O God! God!
    How weary, stale, flat and unprofitable,
    Seem to me all the uses of this world!
    Fie on't! ah fie! 'tis an unweeded garden,
    That grows to seed; things rank and gross in nature
    Possess it merely. That it should come to this!
    But two months dead: nay, not so much, not two:
    So excellent a king; that was, to this,
    Hyperion to a satyr; so loving to my mother
    That he might not beteem the winds of heaven
    Visit her face too roughly. Heaven and earth!
    Must I remember? why, she would hang on him,
    As if increase of appetite had grown
    By what it fed on: and yet, within a month--
    Let me not think on't--Frailty, thy name is woman!--
    A little month, or ere those shoes were old
    With which she follow'd my poor father's body,
    Like Niobe, all tears:--why she, even she--
    O, God! a beast, that wants discourse of reason,
    Would have mourn'd longer--married with my uncle,
    My father's brother, but no more like my father
    Than I to Hercules: within a month:
    Ere yet the salt of most unrighteous tears
    Had left the flushing in her galled eyes,
    She married. O, most wicked speed, to post
    With such dexterity to incestuous sheets!
    It is not nor it cannot come to good:
    But break, my heart; for I must hold my tongue.

    Re: The English Site

    Dr. DR - 26.06.2007, 20:56

    Sounds like Hamlet...

    The German version is:

    O daß dieses allzu - - allzu - - feste Fleisch schmelzen
    und in Thränen aufgelöst zerrinnen möchte!
    Oder daß Er, der Immerdaurende, seinen Donner nicht
    gegen den Selbst-Mord gerichtet hätte! O Gott! o Gott!
    Wie ekelhaft, schaal, abgestanden und ungeschmakt
    kommen mir alle Freuden dieser Welt vor!
    Fy, fy, mir graut davor! Es ist ein ungesäuberter Garten,
    wo alles in Saamen schießt, und mit Unkraut und Disteln überwachsen ist.
    Daß es dahin gekommen seyn soll! Nur zween Monate todt!
    Nein, nicht einmal so viel; nicht so viel -
    - Ein so vortrefflicher König - - gegen diesen,
    wie Apollo gegen einen Satyr: Der meine Mutter so zärtlich liebte,
    daß kein rauhes Lüftchen
    sie anwehen durfte - - Himmel und Erde!
    Warum muß mir mein Gedächtniß so getreu seyn? Wie, hieng sie nicht an ihm,
    als ob selbst die Nahrung ihrer Zärtlichkeit
    ihren Hunger vermehre? - - und doch, binnen einem Monat -
    - Ich will, ich darf nicht dran denken - - Gebrechlichkeit, dein Nam' ist Weib!
    Ein kleiner Monat! Eh noch die Schuhe abgetragen waren,
    in denen sie meines armen Vaters Leiche folgte,
    gleich der Niobe lauter Thränen - - Wie? Sie - - eben sie -
    - (o Himmel! ein vernunftloses Thier
    würde länger getraurt haben) mit meinem Oheim verheyrathet -
    - Meines Vaters Bruder; aber meinem Vater gerade so gleich
    als ich dem Hercules. Binnen einem Monat! -
    - Eh noch das Salz ihrer heuchelnden Thränen
    ihre rothen Augen zu jüken aufgehört,
    verheyrathet! - - So eilfertig, und
    in ein blutschänderisches Bette! -
    - Nein, es ist nichts Gutes, und kan zu nichts Gutem ausschlagen.
    Aber - - o brich du, mein Herz, denn meine Zunge muß ich schweigen heissen.

    Now something easy for you...

    This kindness will I show.
    Go with me to a notary, seal me there
    Your single bond; and, in a merry sport,
    If you repay me not on such a day,
    In such a place, such sum or sums as are
    Express'd in the condition, let the forfeit
    Be nominated for an equal pound
    Of your fair flesh, to be cut off and taken
    In what part of your body pleaseth me.

    Puh, my sister's commencment is today, and I'm going to perform with my cello. The good part about it is that I can sit in the first row, but still, performing in front of all the grade 12 students and teachers and parents is sooooo scary.

    (It's what did you play)
    It wasn't that bad after all. We played in a quartett with 2 celli, 1 violin, and one piano. The music we played was by Antonio Vivaldi, Cello Concert in G minor. The whole commencment basically was nothingelse except the graduates receiving there diploma, one after the other. Some graduates won some awards and scholarship, so they got that. Overall the whole cemmencmant was 2 and a half hours. After that my family and me went out for diner.

    Re: The English Site

    Dr. DR - 28.06.2007, 18:19

    What I meant was: What did you have to play...
    So now your sister is with you at the same school? What is actually the school's name?

    Well, now I understand...

    Re: The English Site

    So do you actually know what the commencment is?

    Re: The English Site

    Dr. DR - 28.06.2007, 21:43

    Are you sure, that the spelling is commencment? If you mean commencement it is: 1. Anfang m, Beginn m; 2. Am. (Tag m der) Feier f der Verleihung akademischer Grade...
    I first thougt (because of the first meaning) your sister was starting at your school, but know I know that she finished school (because of the second meaning).

    Farewell

    Gosh, she killed me.
    I mean, when I first saw her in that dusty factory hall, I fell in love right away. Who wouldn’t? She was that kinda girl you cannot resist. She had this silvern hair and these silvern eyes and the most beautiful nose I’ve ever seen too. And she was as sweet as a candy bar. Granted, she was a bit heavy, I couldn’t have lifted her, I reckon, but hell, who cares? She got a face too. Boy, that face was so pretty, I nearly started to cry. It was damn close, I’m telling you. I’m not joking. I musta stared at her five minutes or so and then, guess what she did. She gave me that look. I swear, you never saw anything like that. Gosh, I nearly fainted. And boy, I couldn’t believe my eyes, but I swear she winked at me. I couldn’t believe it. She was that kinda girl that would never ever wink in no situation and that wasn’t even able to, you might believe, but hell, I swear, I’m mighty serious when I say: She did. All in all, she looked like an angel, man, or at least she came fucking close to it.
    Now, what can I say? I began to meet her. And boy, she loved me back. I told her everything about myself, where I came from, which girls I had been seeing and stuff like that. I also told her about the trick cyclist I’d met for a while and who had suspected that I saw and heard things that wasn’t real and so on. I reckon he was nuts.
    Well, she didn’t talk much. She waited for the right moments to speak and those moments was rare. Her quietness didn’t bother me at all. She listened while I did the talking… I liked it.
    After a while or so we made some trips together over Europe and near the Russian border and God knows how happy I was when she was with me. Only my partner Joseph made some trouble. I must have a partner you know, everyone of us got one. That’s necessary ‘cause it’s a kinda challenging and demanding job, as I was told. Only for very reasonable and responsible people. God knows why they got me…
    So where did I stop? Oh yeah, my partner. Well, I didn’t like him much but he wasn’t a real asshole or anything neither. I reckon, he didn’t like me much neither, thought I was mad or something, but he didn’t talk about it, so it was fine.
    It was that time when the Russkies made a lot of trouble and you know I got this job, he. Well, one day when I was just sitting around with her in the plane I heard this weird voice, I’d heard a long time ago. It got a strange sound but the words was as clear as possible: He that has ears to hear, let him hear. I am telling you: An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Now time has come to give them hell, for we received but hatred and blood. Dump her!
    Just like that: Dump her! Boy, I was angry as hell. Oh, how I longed to kill that sonuvabitchuvavoice and if it woulda been here (in a physical way I mean) I’m sure I’d done it in. Every country needs a saviour and You are our saviour. This country counts on You and You won’t disappoint us, I know that. Dump her!
    Who cares, I thought. You always disappoint someone. “She stays!” I told him. “And that’s final.”
    Love, my boy, love is for the weak and the lost. You are strong and You are going to gather the lost around You and make them found. Do not betray us or punishment will arise from the ashes of the betrayed. Every soldier must obey or he is no slodier… Dump her!
    What is left to say? I obeyed of course. Perhaps I shouldn’t, but tell me, who wouldn’t, when your country needs you and everyone’s counting on you and that kinda stuff? Joseph wouldn’t let me though, so I had to shoot him. Wasn’t any fun, I can tell you, but look, I didn’t have any choice, did I? As I said, it’s a mighty serious job beeing pilot in the army. And every soldier must obey orders or he ain’t no soldier, am I right? I bet I am.
    I dumped her, when we was over Moscow and flew damn deep. God may forgive me, I didn’t think about the people down there, I didn’t even feel guilt or anything. I just thought about her and my eyes followed her falling the long way down and just a second before she let her equivalent of thousands and thousands kilotons of TNT explode, I swear, she winked at me.
    As I said, the plane flew damn deep and she was one of the most powerful A-Bombs I’ve ever met. So that’s my and her story…
    Gosh, she killed me.

    So now, what is our next activity? Ah, did I get it right, you want to join the Poetry Group (but are not able to because of all that water between here and there)? Why don't we just write some English poems in here? Self-written of course. And why don't you just start... now?
