NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Suffering minor shoulder lacerations Sunday, longtime New Smyrna Beach surfer Jeffrey Clark became Volusia County's sixth shark bite victim of the year.
"Basically, he and the shark collided in the wave," Capt. Scott Petersohn, spokesman for the Volusia County Beach Patrol, said Monday. "He had two little tiny lacerations on his (right) shoulder . . . he just put some Band-Aids on it."
Clark, 51, was paddling out near the jetty at Ponce Inlet around 5:30 p.m. when the incident happened, Petersohn said.
Clark could not be reached for comment. But Petersohn said Clark, who has surfed locally for 45 years and had never been bitten before, refused medical transport. He said the shark appeared to be a 3 to 4 foot long black tip or spinner shark.
All six Volusia County shark encounters this year happened in New Smyrna Beach and five of them occurred by the jetty, said Petersohn. Ironically, he said, "Sunday night was the start of 'Shark Week' on the Discovery Channel."
