Review- Jussi Syren and the Groundbreakers
A review from our Programme Director

Who knew the grass was blue in Finland?
    By: Mark Bee

I'm sitting at my computer and listening to CD's with my headset on nearly full volume, when an intern walks in and scares the jitters right out of me. I take one ear out of the headset and glance at the clock. The intern is early, and I know that something is terrible wrong. Certainly the planets are aligned, or there is a fire at the high school. Perhaps locus are attacking the town.
Unsure whether my words should be greetings or a panic driven question, I smile nervously. He smiles back and says flatly, "You have to hear this. It's from Finland!" Oh-kay I felt myself speaking slowly as if it were some twisted dream. Certainly this intern wasn't making a programming suggestion. His CD collection includes Eminem, which I was surprised to learn was not a candy coated chocolate, Fi-ty Cent (I'm told it's 'wack' to pronounce the F in fiFty), and Basket Full of Puppies. He actually explained to me once that that particular band is really called Anthrax, but with their heightened sensitivity considered a change after 9/11.
After I was certain that I was awake and at my desk, I fully removed the headset from my head. "What do you have?", I asked peering into the yellow brown envelope in his hand. "This came yesterday and had a fly cover photo, so I listened to it while I was logging it in." He removed the CD from it's envelope and it had a blue sticker. This is the coding for bluegrass in our studio. Amazed, I looked at the intern once more, this time only to see him smiling cheek to cheek. "You'll like it. It's great." I took the CD and opened the cover. The CD was 'The Verdict' by Jussi Syren. That's was the beginning.
Jussi Syren's Cd does indeed have a 'fly' cover. It's a blue toned picture of, what I can only assume is Jussi and the band on an ill lit deserted urban street. Inside, however is some great music including a remake of the Eddie Rabbit hit "Drivin' My Life Away". This Finish bluegrass group is made up of Jussi Syren who sings lead and tenor vocals, plays mandolin, and guitar; Juha-Pekka Putkonen - guitar and vocals; Tauri Oksala- banjo ; Kari Hella- bass; and Kukka Lehto- fiddle; Marko Vanhatalo- dobro. There are several remakes as well as some original material. The tracks that stand out include the afore mentioned Rabbitt remake, "Down In The Wasted Valley" which has a Soggy Bottom feel, standard "Didn't They Crucify My Lord", and the instrumental "White Water Rag".
I am uncertain of how popular Bluegrass Music is in Finland, but Jussi and his pickin partners can play, and play well. This is far more than an amateurish attempt to make a CD, but rather a project of heart. This is a bluegrass CD that bluegrass and country music fans alike can enjoy. It is fresh and exudes a true love of music. Jussi's voice has a 1960's country crooner essence to it. I actually enjoyed his version of "Billy Jack Washburn" as well as Paycheck's.
Surely a CD worth having in your collection, it is one of the few that stick out in the hundreds of CD's that cross my desk in any given month. This is the future of bluegrass music if we are fortunate.
