I usually do not listen to country music, but when it comes to I like Split Lip Rayfield ... it's bluegrass, but kinda with a punk-rock intensity.

Ich habe und gesehene bluegrass in Deutschland und in Frankreich sowie
Irland gehört. Es gibt Vereine gebildete Studie dieser Form.

I have heard and seen bluegrass in Germany and France as well as Ireland. There are music clubs which study this form in all countries of Europe. I am surprised that the list in the first post doesn't list some of the true bluegrass bands of Germany, Czech Republic and France. Some are as good or better than many US bands. Some of the finest bluegrass instruments in the world are handbuilt in Czech--fiddle, mandolin especially!

it would be great if any of you guys would open up a topic where some bluegrass bands/groups are listed, so that we all can try em out!!! :)

jen already listed some bands...but let's do this in an own topic!

    thank you

To really Hear whats good listen to the Oldies
I know when I first started to listen to bluegrass I listened to the older bluegrass then have evolved into listening to the newer stuff. However, Most of the time I enjoy the older stuff better now. Some new artists, I find interesting but the older ones like in older country somehow make me feel they have lived the words of their songs. NOt just singing someone else's lyrics. Anyhow, I hope this forum gets changed to just bluegrass. Nothing against country just bluegrass is a whole different style of music and deserves to be classified as such. I know as a bluegrass lover I feel as if I'm betraying my music when I click on Country and bluegrass. If you all on the other side of the world want to listen to some good ol'bluegrass buy some Bill Monroe (The father of Bluegrass), Ralph Stanley, Larry Sparks, Jimmie Martin, Flatt&Scruggs,Jim&Jessie, Doyle Lawson,Seldom Seen, McCoury Brothers, Sonny & Bob Osborne (Osborne Brothers),Mac Wiseman, The Country Gentlemen, The Dillards,John Hartford,The Cox Family, J.D. Crowe and the New South, the list goes on and on and I'll try and list the newer bluegrass bands along wtith the ladies on another occassions for as now Its 2:00 in the morning and I simply must get some shut eye for I have to be to work at 2:30 tomorrow so I'll probably sleep till 10 or 11. I hope to make some new friends on this forum. NIghty night don't let the bed bugs bite! Ha!

is there really that big difference between country and bluegrass? i didn't know.
I just checked a download section and i just found country, but when i clicked it, it differed between country and bluegrass ... is it just country is more famous?

Yes Anton, Big difference! When my husband and I lived in Nashville, Tn. We advertized for guitar players, only to have guys answer the ad that had been playing country and they couldn't begin to keep up with strong the rythum of bluegrass. Bluegrass is very acoustic and mostly strings. Very rarely but once in a great while you'll hear a little drum but thats not the norm and older bluegrassers would never hear of it. My husband did put drums on one of his songs he did yrs. ago but I'm not at all impressed with the way it made the songs sound. Some of the most talented musicians that I've heard are the bluegrassers. Alot of country music is bought music. In other words Music Row makes alot of people famous. They pick someone that is somewhat talented but has a look or whatever not because they are that great but because they are marketable. It's a money racket. You don't find that in Bluegrass Music. Yes it is less popular and thats one of the reasons it's still a true to the heart music. Although today there are those that have switched over from Country which worries me a little. I don't know if their record sales are slow or what but one in particalar I'll mention is Dolly Parton, personally I can't stand her. She is saying she is doing bluegrass now cause she's returning back to her roots. And I say her roots are probably dark!!! I'm talking about her hair ha. :| Theres alot of bluegrass people that like her singing bluegrass but to me even when she sings bluegrass she sounds country. But thats just my personal opinion. There are some like Ricky Skaggs, Alison Krause, Marty Stewart, Patty Lovelace that have done country lately and are coming back to bluegrass but they started out doing bluegrass and are very talented. I'm not so mad at them. But the father of Bluegrass Bill Monroe would of never switched. Bye for now.

With this information I would say an only Bluegrass topic would be good.
This remembers me of something I read in another forum about rap music, like if there's a rnb song with a rap vers, is this already hiphop and stuff.
But i see, country is just famous because it's so commercial ... i think that's also like the HH/rnb problem ... i definetly agree with you, music must come from the heart!

    Re: International Acts I LOVE

    rhuN - 24.03.2005, 19:41

on that point I also have to agree...totally! this is not just a bluegrass-problem...we can see this as a generic problem concerning almost every kind of music! questions like: is this true? does it come from the heart? why do they just do it for the money? is the style important or not? stuff like that you know! ...this is TRULY a problem, BUT...I also have to agree with anton here...it is enough to have one particular bluegrass-section in here...as well as one particular country-section...they are listed together in one section, and that's just because of the way it is played instrumentally...that's what they have in common, and there's no discussion! don't try to convince me anyway...I have already understodd where the true difference between country and bluegrass actually lies!

so, well, you can also use this section to discuss about THESE problems you mentioned! this is also allowed, if it stays serious...and you should know that! what about opening up a topic that deals with the "money-issue" or "music from the heart"...you may do that and this is ok, as it has always been :) remember! How about...someone writes a text with his opinions concerning true music (maybe also appropriate for the lyrics/texts-section, as long as it stays kinda obejective)???????

try it out and you will see that there are other ways to get ppl into something totally new to them...thanks!

Yo Anton! I just saw Split Lip Rayfield in Ft. Worth Texas. The bass player is a good buddy of mine. I was surprised to see them mentioned by someone from Germany. That is COOL! 8) Back home in Kansas, (where SLR is from) we call what they play "Thrash Grass" . It's not TRUE bluegrass, but is played using bluegrass instrumentation, and is very exciting and intense music. I think that a lot of metal heads have been converted to bluegrass fans because of them. Later! :D

    Tommy Emmanuel
I almost forgot. Y'all need to check out a guy from Austrailia named Tommy Emmanuel. He is by FAR the best finger style guitar player I have ever heard.
