If Eminem couldn't get fired up for the first date of his summer tour, perhaps no concert would be enough to bring out the lively side of the notorious rapper.
Fortunately, for an audience of 14,000, Marshall Mathers rose to the occasion Thursday at Verizon Wireless Music Center.
The "Anger Management" show featured plenty of high-concept production on opening night, but human touches from Eminem made the performance more rewarding than past efforts to promote his "Slim Shady," "Marshall Mathers" and "Eminem" albums.
His current album is titled "Encore," and one of its tunes -- "Puke" -- began a three-song run of blistering sentiment.
Featuring a cruel jab at Mariah Carey, "Puke" aimed its poison at relationships gone wrong. It was here that Eminem chose passion to replace a dead-eyed stare that's accompanied previous tours.
Up next was "Kill You," and he maintained the spirited delivery even when targeting foes who don't fall in the category of ex-lovers.
The segment ended with "Like Toy Soldiers," the "Encore" single that finds Eminem weighing the costs of heated rivalries.
If the Detroit-based superstar is willing to reveal a smidgen of emotional growth these days, he's also not afraid to have fun.
He sparked thousands of smiles when rapping oldies by Biz Markie and Slick Rick, as well as when he danced Timberlake-style at the conclusion of the D12 hit "My Band."
A heavier tone accompanied the concert's visual themes, from Eminem's suicidal hints in the pre-show video to a President Bush stand-in during "Mosh" (surprisingly, the faux W. escaped the tune unscathed).
Ten sets of doors on three vertical levels allowed the members of D12 to come and go during the show, and Eminem flexed biceps that will rival 50 Cent's when he joins the tour Monday.
Until then, super-sub Ludacris will entertain audiences with his anti-anger approach.
Atlanta's inventive chart-topper transmitted joy when performing hits such as "Stand Up," "Get Back" and "Number One Spot." Luda's apparently such a peacemaker that he was joined onstage by Pacer Stephen Jackson -- presumably a mortal enemy of the Pistons-loving D12 crew.
To paraphrase the rapper's pragmatic advice about avoiding trouble: "Don't start any, there won't be any."
Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz opened the show, but the kings of crunk were overshadowed by Pitbull, their guest who specialized in Latin beats and rapid-fire rhymes.
