Sorry "Jumpin' Jack Flash" fans, the best rock 'n' roll band is not the Brits bound to rock the Missoula stadium in a couple weeks.

Rather, the title goes to that other English group — the mop-topped Fab Four, more commonly known as the Beatles — or at least so say Tribune readers.

"No question it's the Beatles," said Jim Baskett of Columbus. "To see how their music has stood up over time, not to mention the sheer creativeness of John, Paul, George and Ringo."

Christine Springer described the Beatles as "truly ground-breaking in the 1960s."

"They expanded the rock genre in exciting new ways, and their music continues to inspire new musicians and entertain audiences even to this day," the Great Falls woman said.

"Simply the greatest pop culture force in history," added a reader from Edmonds, Wash.

A Tribune poll to determine the greatest rock band of all time pulled in 68 votes from around Montana and nearby states.

Some underdogs like The Plain White Ts, a Chicago group that gave a free concert this year at the Montana State Fair, and the local group Enceladus even grabbed nominations.

However, the Beatles captured the majority of the votes, with another British group close behind. Sorry Stones fans, Led Zeppelin nabbed the second spot.

"This band created a whole new sound in the world of classic rock," 17-year-old Natalie Moore said. "At the time of their debut, people said they were heavy metal (this was the first time people heard this term). They made the fact well known that heavy was not a volume, it was an attitude."

In addition to hard rock, Zeppelin also ventured into the realms of southern, bluegrass and experimental, Moore said. Led Zeppelin delivered human emotion-filled songs about love, death, sex and rock 'n' roll, cementing a forever position in the world of rock.

"Led Zeppelin is the most influential band in rock and heavy metal," Jake Simonich said. "Everything rock we hear on the radio today is because of the chance they took in creating the sound in godly songs such as 'Kashmir,' 'Fool in the Rain,' 'Going to California,' 'Rock 'n' Roll' and, of course, 'Stairway to Heaven.'"

    Now onto those other Brits.

The Rolling Stones snatched third place to the tune of comments like, "They are the epitome of what a rock 'n' roll band should be" and "The Rolling Stones are the BOMB!"

"Their music has been around for the listening enjoyment of people around the world for decades, and it never dies," wrote three ladies (Margaret Bernard, Avis Rock and Misty Denny) dubbed Mick's babes.

"Mick Jagger is 63 years old and still moves around the stage like he's 20. The older generation love it, the younger generation experience it and learn to love it and the in-betweens, or middle-aged crazies, well, let's just say they still party like they, too, are 20 years old."

Next in line is a toss up between two bands from opposite ends of the rock spectrum: hard rockers KISS and, on a lighter note, the Bee Gees.

"Barry Gibb has more talent than any musician alive," said Jeff Bragg Sr. "He can sing in different voices (pitches) with very little effort and sound fantastic. The Bee Gees is the choice CD I play in my boat when we are fishing, and the fish really bite."

"It's just funk and groovin,' man," added Neil Michaels.

Though the critics have not favored the painted and costumed rockers called KISS, the band still maintains an impressive resume.

"They've always went against the grain of convention," said Sheldon C. of Havre, who added that KISS is credited with more gold albums than the Beatles or the Stones, though the band hasn't sold more.

Another hard rock group that landed in the top 10 is Van Halen.

"Before Van Halen's debut album in 1978, rock music just had to be loud," said Joe O'Meara of Missoula. "After 'Eruption,' it became apparent that rock 'n' roll had to be loud AND fast."

O'Meara gave kudos to each front man — David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar and Gary Cherone — but most notably mentioned Eddie Van Halen's outstanding guitar talent.

"Guitar-wise, Eddie himself put it best: 'I gave rock guitar a shot in the arm,'" O'Meara said.

Pink Floyd also made the list, with one reader basically calling "The Wall" a lullaby. AC/DC grabbed some votes, too.

"Bon Scott is the best front man in rock, and not even his demise could stop the bad boys from down under," local fan Derek French said.

According to folks like Nate Wilburn, Blue Oyster Cult deserves the title.

"Their lyrics are deep and thought provoking, and the subject matter is wide ranging," Wilburn said. "Their use of multiple hard-driving lead guitars on such classic works as 'Golden Age of Leather' and 'Career of Evil' have never been matched by any other hard rock band. BOC can sing a sad ballad that would bring a tear to a glass eye or rock the house down."

Tim Faber of Big Sandy and Jerry Puffer of Shelby feel just as strongly about the Moody Blues, the last group to make the top 10 cut.

"The Moodies were doing concept albums before we even knew what a concept album was," Puffer said. "Listen to their stuff from as early as 1967 — they were doing things the Beatles couldn't even dream of. While the Beatles did a lot of 'Silly Love Songs' and the Stones were/are pretty much a noisy garage band that got some breaks, the Moodies were and still are ahead of their time."

"Give me 'Nights in White Satin' over 'She Loves You' any old Tuesday afternoon."
