INTERVIEW MIT TOBI SAMMET ÜBER MICHAEL KISKE 2006
    TOBIAS SAMMET(AVANTASIA/EDGUY)

He's the singer and main compositor from the german band: Edguy.

With Edguy he recorded 8 albums; "Savage Poetry" (1995), "Kingdom Of Madness" (1997), "Vain Glory Opera" (1998), "Theater Of Salvation" (1999), "The Savage Poetry" (2000), "Mandrake" (2001), "Hellfire Club" (2004), "Superheroes EP" (2005) and "Rocket Ride" (2006).

He also made the project Avantasia, released in 2 Cds with Michael Kiske as guest musician.

Fanclub: You can definately hear a classical influence on the Avantasia and early Edguy albums. Do you have any favorite classical composers?
Tobias Sammet: I'd say there's more a pseudo classical influence on Avantasia. If I ever do something like that again it will be quite different in terms of classical elements. On "Hellfire Club", when we worked with the orchestra it was better.

I like some stuff of Wagner, some things of him are too dark for me but I guess that's a matter of perception. I like the way he tones down to build the tension up again and explode the moment afterwards. I like several "heavier" composers like Beethoven. Bach is great too. I don't like the gay ones like Vivaldi. Some of his stuff was good, but to me he is the classical equivalent to Yngwie Malmsteen and I guess he wore women's underwear back then, hahaha... Ouch, I'm starting with prejudice that people have towards us too... I like his four seasons.

Fanclub: Why did you begin to sing? And what is your biggest influence?

Tobias Sammet: It makes me feel good. It gives me the feeling to do something important and it seems to give other people joy. I am a person who just feels great whenever I can make other people happy. That's why I go on stage and hope that people will enjoy the show and have a good laugh, that they go home after the concert and feel better.

I wanted to become a musician when I first heard AC/DC and KISS. And I knew I wanted to become a singer when I first heard Michael on "Eagle Fly Free". I liked the positive feeling. It was powerful but it was in a positive way, it was not kitsch but it was so optimistic, full of hope and had a power that no Black or Death Metal band EVER will have.

Fanclub: Which is the album where you have been on and had the best sales?

Tobias Sammet: I guess it's been "Hellfire Club" in some territories and "Avantasia Part II" in others.

Fanclub: Do you think there will ever be an Avantasia concert with all the singers?
Tobias Sammet: I don't think so. I've been asked a thousand times and I've been offered a lot. But if I'd do it it was just for the money and life is too short to just worry about the money. If I'll ever get the feeling that I have to do it I will, but I think I'd get a heart attack even before the event would happen.

Fanclub: I heard that Eric Adams [Manowar] and Tony Martin [ex-Black Sabbath, Giuntini, Empire...] declined to be on Avantasia. Were there that many that didn't want to collaborate on it?

Tobias Sammet: Not too many, Brian May [Queen] declined because of schedule problems. I guess everything is predestined and I believe that the line up was exactly the right line up to make Avantasia what it was at the time. That being said I'd do many things in a different way nowadays. But I was young, I asked some of my heroes and what you find on the album is exactly the best I could do at the time.

Fanclub: Can you tell us if there are any another tracks of Avantasia that are not on the albums? Is it true that you were planning on putting the Avantasia project in 3 albums?

Tobias Sammet: There is no secret tracks except one version of "Inside" where Kai Hansen [Gamma Ray, ex-Helloween] is singing about his penis in German... But I wouldn't call that an unreleased track, it was just Kai obviously having too much free time in the studio. I never wanted Avantasia to be a three album project. It was planned to be a 2 album project in the first place.

Fanclub: There is a rumor that you cried the first time you heard the last part of ''Farewell''. Is that true?

Tobias Sammet: Come on, the part isn't THAT bad that you have to cry, haha. Seriously: No, I didn't cry. But I had goose bumps when I heard Michael's recordings of "Reach Out For The Light" the first time over the telephone when he played it to me. I mean, for me he was back then the singer that made me decide to become a singer too. And here he was, singing MY song. "Farewell" was more a funny thing, because Michael told me in advance I shouldn't come up with too high vocal lines, so I just squeezed out some incredibly high lines at the end of "Farewell" and sent him the demo. And for some reason he took it seriously and sang it. It was funny, but it was so good, so we had to take it on the album.

Fanclub: Will Michael Kiske be on another album of yours? Maybe in the future?
Tobias Sammet: I don't know. I like him, I like his voice. But people call us "Metal band", so I don't know. That being said, I will always be there to support him in any possible way, but it would be disrespectful to push him to things he doesn't wanna do.

On the other hand: I don't think Michael ever had any problem with Edguy or Avantasia. The press seems to come up with his anti-Metal attitude every now and then and I believe he enjoys that. But I don't think there is any GENERAL anti-whatever attitude.

At the end of the day I guess we are just two musicians who respect each others, respect our music for its quality and not its genre or label. And we get along without problems. Okay, if you ask me again: Why not? Haha...

Fanclub: Would you like the idea of writing and recording songs together with Michi? I guess maybe it would be a more acoustic, and classical with orchestras. Could you imagine yourself taking part in such a project?

Tobias Sammet: Why not? I am open to anything. For some people in Metal you have to be careful sometimes: You cut your hair 3cm and sing one ballad too much and you are a traitor, haha. I like being a traitor in any way. Life is too short to live up to expectations. But I don't know what kind of music it would be. I am just a phone call away, so if our schedule allow it...

Fanclub: How did you and Michael work together?

Tobias Sammet: Actually he recorded the stuff at his home studio and sent it to us. We haven't talked for a while now, but whenever we speak or mail it's cool. We exchange thoughts and perspectives and it gives you new points of view. On anything. He's a fun guy to talk to, maybe some people call him difficult, but great persons are difficult. People who bash someone else for having a complex personality just don't know better. We are complicated, maybe that connects...

Fanclub: Michael received a lot of offers, and he didn't accept, but he always says "yes" to you, how did you get it?

Tobias Sammet: I don't know. There are people that you feel connected to and others that you don't. And you just can't say why. Maybe the first time he just felt
that it was no business reason, I accepted not promoting his name just because it was important for me personally to have him. And of course I respect him for who he is and what he does and vice versa. I guess that's it. Respect helps a lot.

Fanclub: We have a section where musicians give us an opinion about Michael Kiske and his voice. Could you give us your opinion about it?

Tobias Sammet: Great singer. Suprised me with his performance on Place Vendome. But I still think that he is best when he sings the old style. Grunge didn't suite him
very well. He will kill me for saying this. I like various kinds of music. In fact I am one of the biggest Journey and Steve Perry fans, I like Madonna and Blackmore's Night. And I like Queen and Van Halen and Sarah Brightman and whatever. So I am not one of those who are exclusively into Metal. But I just think that he is unique when it comes to singing tunes like "Eagle Fly Free". I like the epic tracks on "Chameleon" too, but to me they are feeling wise not so far away from songs like "Eagle Fly Free". It's optimistic and powerful.

His voice sounds better when it's loud. There is no one who can match and that's why Metal fans get angry when he says he doesn't wanna do that anymore. Of course they have to respect that cause HE is the only one to decide, but I guess Michi takes it as an insult sometimes. But I guess it's just the old fans' way of saying: "Michi, we are sick of the copy-cats, no one can do it like you could!" I've just been to a Helloween show recently and in the middle of the show a fan screamed into the hall: "Shut up! You don't know shit about what it was like in the late eighties!" I don't say I agree, but it's a very direct way of making Michi a compliment. I just hope he takes it easy in the future and does what he feels he has to do.
