    Fun Work days
Work can be a bitch, but sometimes i feel like just laughing it all out.
It's pretty crazy around our office too and so many stupid weird amusing things happen.

Today I was talking to the customer of the programm i'm working on at the moment. I didn't had all new features of the new version ready yet as i ran into some unexpected troubles implementing them but told him I'll comment out some not working code and send him a Beta version so he can try it out and test it.
The moment I hang up - the second phone on my desk rings. It was our Administrator that wanted to let us know he needs to update something and had just taken down our mail server.....
    D'oh!

So, let me hear about your stuff

I used to do 2nd and 3rd line support for an ISP and used to fix all the not so simple problems.

It always used to make me laff when a customer with one of these more major problems would be put through to me and start ranting down the phone because I had not got to fix his problem yet as I was still dealing with other problems infront of him in the que.

When will people realise that if you start shouting at the the support guy down the phone, the nice people behind you in the que instanly get put infront of you.

I have worked IT support for several companies and it is the same at all of them.

Oh and if you think that they don't know the mail server is down, trust me, they do. Its the biggest, most call generating problem there is.

    Ring ring "I can't get my e-mail"
    - "we know, now F#£K off and let us fix it"

currently in iceland building a 1.3 billion USD aluminium smelter. my job is the traffic & logistics coordinator for the project. since iceland is quite remote, we have to fly in the majority of the urgent materials needed. so, we're waiting for some steel plates to come in, everything is arranged, aproximately 9000 USD spent for the urgent air freight. the transport company's truck gets into the warehouse, and i go down there to take a look at the cargo. we open up the boxes, and instead of 250 lbs of steel plates, we got 200 lbs of cheese cake :D
so, the entire project had cheese cake that day :D

P.S. the steel plates arrived after 1 hour anywayz, so everyone was happy.

I souldnt worry Diegles, my last job was for a software house doing Financial Services software. Only about 5% of the calls are either a$$ holes aor people to stupid to own a computer. Dealing with the general public for the ISP was worse though. about 15%.

We used GotoAssits (a remote cytrix client) to connect to their PC's and take control of their PC. (I still think thats cool LOL). When you are doing that to fix their PC they think you are a hero!

That reminds me of another funny thing though.

A lot of the financial advisers PC's we used to connect to were self employed and not part of a larger office. When we would dial in a connect to their home PC for the first time, and they realised we were now looking at the same desktop they were, with 'that' desktop wallpaper... Or "I'm sorry sir but the reason your network setting are srewed you is because you have downoaded this porn dialer... " or you are browsing the folders on their PC looking for something and find a load of folders called blowjobs, facials, fisting, golden showers....

Lets just say that although I was still talking to the client as if nothing was wrong and I hadn't noticed, but I was franticly waving my arms for all the other support guys to have a look at my screen.

like... you can go into the screen of the calling user, and do it for him, so he can watch and learn? In norway thats used only for companies, and Stores with problems!

A lot of compaies use it these days for client support. It saves so much time and site visits. Most people were user and had no idear about their PC other than using the software they were used to. Not really the kind of person you mant to just talk through fixing their registry...

It also get past most fire walls because the client establises the link to you, rather than the other way around.

I could dial into their server, install server software and databases and check network configuration and user permissions and host out the data. Then into the work stations and install database software, plug ins and check they could connect to server databases. Could do an entire site install from my desk. Client would only have to put the CD in the drive.

Although I have done the whole thing remote before without a CD. Dial in to them pick up their old client database and FTP it to my desk. Convert the data into Filemaker, dial back into the client and FTP them the converted databases, FM server and FIlemaker Pro Workstation and our own software and then install it on everything.

It dead handy for fixing my mums PC too ;-) (still have the log in password to use my old companies GoToAssost accounts)
