Anti-Terrorism: Schaeuble wants more controls on internet
Federal Internal Affairs Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble is arguing in favour of tighter controls on the internet in order to fight terrorism. He told the weekly newspaper 'Die Zeit' that that would require experts with special linguistic skills. At the same time, he called for intensified controls on air and rail traffic, as well as closer observation of suspect groups by domestic intelligence.
The federal government is willing to provide security agencies with more money in the fight against terrorism. Cabinet is in agreement, government spokesman Thomas Steg said today in Berlin, that preventive measures - such as better surveillance of the internet - must be improved. If these measures cannot be financed by, for example, juggling existing budgets, he added, then the federal government will make available additional funds for personnel and other costs.
Federal Cabinet discusses military engagement in Lebanon
Berlin. The federal Cabinet today addressed the issue of German involvement in the UN peace-keeping force in Lebanon. The government has already offered naval forces to the United Nations, but ruled out sending in battle troops. Cabinet did not make any final decision. The Bundestag will have the last word on the matter.
Cabinet approves worker-posting law for janitorial work
Berlin. The federal Cabinet today decided to extend the worker-posting law ("Entsendegesetz") [which effectively creates a minimum wage by preventing workers from other countries from declaring themselves to be independent contractors and offering their services to domestic companies for less than regular (German) employees must be paid] to include the janitorial services branch. That means that a minimum wage will come into effect there - 7.87 euros per hour in Western Germany, 6.36 in the East. In addition, foreign workers in the industry will have to be paid the same as Germans. Until now, these regulations applied only to the construction industry.
Debate over Congo mission erupts anew
The unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo has reawakened the discussion over the sending of German troops into the country. The FDP spoke of a consequence-laden mistake, and called for the timetable for the end of the mission to not be changed. The Green Party, on the other hand, called for it to be extended. Defence Minister Franz Josef Jung said that he was confident that the German Armed Forces ("Bundeswehr") was on top of the situation. He said that, if necessary, the German soldiers would "create the necessary respect".
Cabinet approves bio-fuel minimum
Beginning in 2007, every Litre of gasoline or diesel fuel will have to include a legally mandated minimum level of bio-fuel. The federal coalition government today reached an agreement on a bill to that effect. The Finance Ministry expects that the regulation will lead to higher prices at the pumps. According to the Petroleum Business Association, drivers can expect to pay an additional three cents per Litre. With the planned increase in the Value-Added Tax coming into effect at the same time, gas prices will jump by 6.5 cents per Litre on 1 January.
First round of steel-industry contract talks adjourned
The first round of contract negotiations for the approximately 85,000 employees in the iron and steel industry in North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, and Bremen, has ended in Gelsenkirchen without any offer from the employers' side. Talks will resume in a week. The 'IG Metall' union is calling for pay increases of seven percent. The 'Stahl' employers' association rejects this as "excessive" and warns of lost jobs. Last year, the union entered negotiations calling for 6.5 percent, and the final agreement was for 3.5 percent.
Vodafone cannot let cell-phone credit expire
The telecommunications company Vodafone will no longer be allowed to declare customer credit on cell-phone calling cards to be "expired". The Regional Court in Duesseldorf has ruled in favour of the Federal Association of Consumer Centres, that contract conditions stating otherwise were null and void. The expiry without compensation is apparently only mentioned in the company's terms of business on its website. The judges objected to this as those terms can only be read in the course of placing an order. Vodafone states that it has over seven million customers using such pre-paid calling cards. The Higher Regional Court in Munich issued a similar ruling against the cell-phone service provide 'O2' in June.
Search for second suitcase bomber
Karlsruhe. German security forces continue their wide-scale search for the second (attempted) suitcase bomber of last week. The twenty-year-old Lebanese man is, according to Federal Attorney-General, Monika Harms, on the lam. His accomplice, a twenty-one-year-old Lebanese man, was taken into police custody in Kiel on Saturday. According to reports in the newspapers 'Sueddeutsche Zeitung' and 'Der Tagesspiegel', both men left Germany, headed for Turkey, on 31 July, after placing explosives-laden suitcases on two regional trains. It is not clear why the older man returned to Germany. Meanwhile, police have searched several residences in Kiel and North Rhine-Westphalia.
World Basketball Championships: Germany in eighth-finals
Hiroshima, Japan. The German national basketball team has reached the eighth-finals in the World Basketball Championships in Japan. Under coach Dirk Bauermann, the team today beat underdog Panama 81-63. Dirk Nowitzki was the top scorer.
World Equestrian Championships: Gold for German dressage team
The German dressage team has - for the tenth time - won the gold medal in the World Equestrian Championships, in Aachen. Heike Kemmer, Nadine Capellmann, Isabell Werth, and Hubert Schmidt beat out the teams from the Netherlands and the United States. Germany's dressage riders have been unbeaten in the World Championships team rankings for thirty-six years now.
