Air travel security - does this affect SR
    Hi,

I have just been informed by hubby that he's read news that musicians are now complaining about the recent problem with the necessary increase in air travel security. Previously musicians used to be able to carry smaller instruments - guitars, violins etc - some very valuable - onto air craft as hand luggage. With the increased security arrangements these instruments have to be loaded into the hold with all other luggage This may appear to be a stupid question but just wondering if this affects the guys in SR.

Good question, Redlollipop!! For most of the guys I don't figure it's an issue as their instruments are big enough to require flight cases anyway, but Ian likes to carry his sax with him, that I know...maybe ask him on the official boards if he's had to deal with that? I'm sure he'd answer.

Dave told us something but I'm not sure if that's official already?! He told us (that's me and some of the Dutchies) that they will probably have to cancel the gig in Greece. Due to air security travelling gets seriously expensive... sad but true! :? :x

That would be awful for the Greek fans if that's true...to miss out because of something some idiot halfway across the globe did. You're so right about security jacking up the prices of flights though, Michi--of the $875 my plane ticket to England cost, over $250 of it was just security fees, Virgin was kind enough to break down the ticket...

I thought, "Throw the armed air marshal off the plane, I'll take my chances..."

I can only imagine what the ticket prices are NOW. (Security was relatively lax when I went in July.) And imagine that cost times 11 just for Mick and the band alone...not to mention that huge crew... :-(

Stupid. Just stupid. What times we live in...

    you are right Shannon....
When we just went to Alaska in July we were able to pack 85 pounds each for our luggage (due to being GOLD preferred status) but TODAY, all those privledges are out the window.

His camera equipment bag would not have been allowed inside the cabin because it was too large and weighed 32 pounds, but since it was in July he was able to being it on board and they stowed it in the "captains closet" if you can believe that, maybe it was because we were first class or that Mark was so sweet to them.

I can't imagine Ian giving up his instruments....

All the crap that we brought BACK was another suit case full of books and tee shirts, and souvineers....They would have charged us more money for the mega-weight we had on the plane.

Yesterday 49 people were killed in Lexington Kentucky when the piolet took off from the WRONG RUNWAY and crashed into a farm field forest.
    YIKES.....

Maybe we should all take an ocean liner across the pond together and have a big Simply Red Party Boat ......to attend the upcoming concerts.

I like a smaller venue to see the band.

    Love,
    Lin xx
(who can only peek in here at work because now my home computer gets filled with virus gremlins and trojan horses every time I try to get on line in here...so sorry, I am missing you here.....the new SR site does not do this to my computer....don't know why all of a sudden I am getting it.)

Air Travel Security - does this affect SR.
    Hi,
Thanks for your replies, especially the info on Ian and the (unofficial) news from Dave that the gig in Greece may have to be cancelled. Also thanks Sasred for the suggestion that I post the question to the guys on the official forum. Obviously the instruments I was thinking about in particular were the smaller ones for the Horny Horns section, as I think these are small enough for hand luggage but it would be fun    to see Pete attempting to board a plane with a full size drum kit as hand luggage!

Very sorry to hear about that show. "Postponed" until when? Well, I guess that's a little bit of insurance for another tour, eh what? :-D

And Redlollipop...I almost spit my breakfast. That would be HILARIOUS if Pete tried pulling that!!!! You'd have to hand out a case per band member...and the bass drum and floor tom still would be over size limit.

The only instruments I think that would even fit would be Chris' flute (his baritone sax would probably be too large), Kevin's trumpet, and Ian's alto sax. Ian's tenor sax is questionable...not sure if it's that one he keeps on the hip.

Everything else, fuggeddit. I found out the hard way that basses won't travel carry-on (even in a paper-thin gig bag)--that's why I now have axes on 2 continents.
