Hey, man...
Now is that an opening line or what? Talk about sounding like coming out of the LSD-tinged California hippie scene of the glorious 70´s!
Ah, how I wish it were still like it was back in the day, something that very few among the yuppie generation of the here and now can equate to. Just ask anyone who was around in the late 60´s all the way to circa. 1985 or so. Dude, it was THE place to be! I´m not directly talking about the drug culture of the day, cos that trip is around today, messing up peoples lives in glorious ways too numerous to count, and besides, I don´t indulge in that crap.
Nope, I´m talking bout the general FEEL of the day way back when. It was carefree, none of this politically correct B.S. or watching out for every penny that you make or spend. You know what irks me royally? It´s this modern-day aura of fast fix/fast food culture. It has no consistency. It´s cheap, downright jolly degrading! I hate living in it. Cos you see, I´m downright proud all the way down to my hippie toejam of being a retro kind of guy.
I come from a day and age when you head to earn your keep in the world. There was none of this here today/gone tommorow horse crap to threaten your everyday existense. Computers hadn´t infested the world, and if you happened to be reading this column back then, it would most certainly have been in print form within the pages of a highly regarded music media like The Recycler or Rolling Stone before they abandoned the audience that made them.
Back then men were men and the women were damn proud of them. Back then we didn´t have gay rights polluting our system, we didn´t have dime-a-dozen TV shows inducing slow lobotomies, we didn´t have braincell-killing TV talkshows, we didn´t have Big Brother invading our privacy like we have today, and we didn´t have pseudo-rock music.
So what do we have today in place of the spirit and nature of what all of us backward hippie cases equate as being true, unadulterated Rock Music? Limp Bizkit. Creed. Britney Spears. The Backseat Boys. Nu Metal.
Ahem...
Let me clear up this little discrepancy of musical awareness for all of you out there.
Limp Bizkit is NOT rock music. Case closed, hatchet buried, coffin nailed shut. Limp Bizkit is not a rock band. I mean just LOOK at them! Now take a classic picture of Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath and hold it up next to Fred Durst and his Jiffy Lube staff. See the comparison? I DON´T!!! There is NO COMPARISON!!! Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath were ROCK BANDS. Limp Bizkit is a corporate bellboy, and besides, I need my oil changed. Next.
Creed. The next Led Zeppelin? PUH-LEASE!!! Excuse me while I go and alleviate my tumultuous bowels from the sudden commotion of tremulous wish-wash...
No, Creed is NOT the next Zeppelin. I need to find and burn the magazine that I read that puff-piece in! Do not, and I repeat, DO NOT tarnish the legacy of Zeppelin by even mentioning the two in the same breath! Creed can barely be equated to a rock band. Creed is a post-grunge band. Creed is radio pseudo-rock at its worst. I tried listening to Creed three years ago when a friend of mine sent me their CD as a "gift" (I guess he couldn´t endure them either) and I can tell you that it was sold in under two weeks. So while you´re at it, file Nickelback under Creed and empty the folder. Besides, they look like loggers from Minnesota.
Britney Spears. Question of the week: What do Britney Spears and Rock Music have in common? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Ha, bet you knew that, right? I mean, why else would you be indulging yourself at this site, deeply engrossed in the contents of my column? Now not to confuse anyone, girls do have a place in rock music. Yes, contrary to popular misinformation, yours truly is not a chauvanist. Girls are a very imporant part of the rock audience. I love to see girls at the shows! Without girls, the volume level at many a gig would be noticably less, and we just can´t have that, can we? Britney looks like she belongs in the audience at a rock concert, and as a very integral part of the audience mind you! You know, now that I come to think of it, I could almost swear I´ve seen Britney at one of our Stoner Kings gigs before...
The Backseat Boys, rock? Nope. Those kinds of Boys are to be filed under the Pop category. More precisely, file them under Pop Tarts. Now don´t confuse these Pop Tarts with the Kelloggs breakfast cereal that goes by the same name. Although both are mass-produced, at least Kelloggs manufactures their own product. And at least Kelloggs Pop Tarts are actual breakfast cereal.
And then we come to Nu Metal. Er...excuse me for a second.
(Insert your own choice of vomiting audibles here...)
Nu Metal is not rock music. NO SIR, NO MA´AM - - NO CHANCE IN HELL! Nu Metal may border on being catchy at times, but so is influenza. Nu Metal is the Great Clone Machine´s latest spat of lunacy. Nu Metal is so destructive that even the heralded Godfather of Metal, the Blizzard of Ozz himself, has gone the ill-fated route of trying to latch on to the quick-fix, non-solution of the Nu Metal gravy train. Just listen to the opening track Gets Me Through on the Ozzman´s latest effort Down To Earth, and you´ll see what I mean. I almost collapsed into a lethargic state of shock when I first heard the piece in question! Doesn´t it strike you funny that in the album credits Ozzy hasn´t written one single song by himself or with his trusty sidekick Zakk?
Of all the madness, WHY?? Ozz, you should´ve stayed true to yourself and told the voices around you to bugger off! You had one of the world´s greatest axemen and riff monsters at your side and you DIDN´T USE HIM!!! WHY??!!!?? Zakk could´ve saved your last album! He could´ve been the missing ingredient! You didn´t NEED to listen to Tim Palmer or whoever else was in you ear and go try Nu Metal on for size! Ozz, it´s not you...and it shows. And what in the name of sanity are all those Nu Metal babies doing at your prestigious Ozzfest???
So Nu Metal is the Antichrist of Metal. And as we all know, Metal IS Rock music if there ever was such a thing. Besides, the majority of Nu Metal is compulsively BORING, much like the majority of Grunge some years ago. And just as Grunge nearly killed mainstream Metal in the 90´s, Nu Metal has attempted to assassinate what´s left of true Metal and Heavy Rock in the modern day.
We need to get back to REAL Rock music - - to go retro in order to get ahead - - and may REAL Heavy Rock and bonafide Metal help us get there again. Raise your Metal fists, brothers and sisters, it´s time for a REVOLUTION!
