    Masters of Rock
I just returned from one of the best festivals I have ever been to, and believe me, I´ve been to many. So I decided to tell you about it. It was Masters of Rock festivalin the Czech Republic. It went on for four whole days, bands playing from nine in the morning til about 2.30 the next morning. The sets were realtively long, about one and a half hours for most bands. As there was only one stage, there was always a pause of half an hour in between acts. Organization was great, the securities were really nice, the Czech crowd was absolutely fantastic, food and beer were fantastic and cheap, and they cleaned the toilets and showers several times every day. They even had running water everywhere, so you could wash your hands. I was really impressed. Compared to Wacken Open Air or even Dynamo the organization seemed so much better. And it was really cheap, too, only 36 Euros for the four day ticket. Made me wonder
how they managed to keep that price.

The fact that the bands had so long set time was a really great plus, although the whole festival really became very long that way, but maybe that was a plus, too? :D

Now about the bands I saw:

    Thursday:

Svaty Pluk: Czech rock band, average.

SSOGE: funny Czech girl choir doing all sorts of rock cover.

Arakain: really good Czech rock band, I liked them.

    Friday:

Horkyze Slize: Czech rock band, quite ok.

Tamoto: German rock band, not really my cup of tea.

Kreator: Really great. Although I have been into metal so long, I had never managed to see them live before, and was positively surprised. Mille Petrozza has a great stage presence. And they really raised the Flag of Hate over the festival ground! :)

The Gathering: Well, I think everybody knows that band around front singer Anneke Giersbergen, but I´m really not into female fronted bands a lot, and they are not real metal, imo.

Whitesnake: I had never seen them live before, and because I had been into them in the eighties, I was really exited. The band was really very good, both guitarsits and the drummer played extensive solos. I think the main reason was that Mr David Coverdale had not the best voice days of his life. It was ok as long as he kept singing normally, but he kept trying high screams all the time (I really wonder why, maybe to prove something?) and his voice always faltered then. I was really a bit disappointed by that. It was totally unncessary. Without that, it would have been a really great concert.

Masterplan: I´ve been a fan of them since they started, and was looking forward to this concert a lot, because it also was one of their last ones together with singer Jorn Lande. The band itself played greally fantasically, making musical jokes by playing old Helloween riffs and mocking around with that. Jorn made a sad impression, though. He kept mixing up parts of the lyrics, and sometimes stopped singing choruses and
left bassists Jan Eckert singing alone. Culminating in saying something like; "There you have the new singer of Masterplan!" I like the way Jan sings, way back when he was in Iron Savior he sang a lot of Kai Hansen´s old parts after he had left the band in the live shows, but I somehow think that Jorn was only mocking him. Why was that necessary? I think he could have put a bit more efford into his last concerts with MP.
But the fact that Roland, Jan, Uli and Axel were having fun made up for it.
That funny thing culminated in the fact that Jorn wanted to leave the stage early and had to be told by Roland that the show wasn´t yet over. Oh, another thing: I was impressed that althought MP ended their show at about 2.30 in the morning, most ppl were still there, and cheering them up. I was really impressed by the Czech audience! :)

    Friday:

Jaksi Taksi: Czech punk (?) band who do a lot of cover songs of German Schlager, with Czech lyrics. Quite funny. I wish I could understand Czech.

Dark Gamballe: Czech rock band, quite good.

Mike Terrana solo set: What to say, the man is genious.

Charon: Unfornunately I fell asleep on the festival ground and missed most of their set.

Leave´s Eyes: Liv Christine has a much better voice than Tarja Turunen, imo (Oops, that will get me some enemies...) but their music is just not appealing to me. The only reason to watch is Alex´Krulls hair, I´m absolutely hairfanantic. I think it is even longer than that of Herman Li, not sure, though.

Crucified Barbara: Female fun rock from Sweden. Paaaaaaaaaaarty! :D

Evergrey: I also managed to sleep though part of their set, but what I saw was really good.

Gamma Ray: For me one of the headliners of this festival, Kai Hansen being as energetic as ever, he had a really great voice that day, even did some Blackmore-and-Gillan style singing with Henjo Richter. All the audience was singing "Heavy Metal Universe", the whole text. It was really
great. Only thing is that they ended their set after one and a half hours with a really strange version of "Somewhere out in Space". I must say that I was really exhausted after it. Positively. :)

Helloween: Definitely not a Headliner in my opinion. The two new musicians are great, both played extended solos. Maybe with the same reason as the long solos in Whitesnake the day before? The voice of Andi Deris (I don´t really like it anyway) was really funny on that day. I mean, he kept changing from normal to head-only voice all the time, and sounded very pressed. On the positive side: For the first time in years I had the impression that Michael Weikath wasn´t bored! And for the last 15 minutes Gamma Ray, with the exception of Daniel Zimmermann, came onto the stage and jammed together with Helloween. Andi Deris even played guitar. All in all it was an ok gig, but nothing outstanding.

Rage: For me the real headliners on that day. I´ve seen them live several times, but this must have been one of their best gigs ever. They played a 20-minute instrumental piece with orchestral playback. The crowd knew most of their lyrics by heart, and when the concert ended at about 2.30 in the morning, thousands were still singing "Higher than the Sky". :D

    Sunday:

Metal Church: I had seen them several years ago with their old singer, and was really looking forward to their concert. And they were really great! I hope they will manage to come back to Europe soon! :)

Riverside: Polish prog band, I liked them a lot.

Korpiklaani: Hadn´t seen them live before. They are great. Although their music is really folk gone metal, and many of their melodies seemed oddly familiar to me from the time I played in a folk band myself. The fiddler wasn´t world class, like the guy from Turisas is, but ok. They made me feel at home with their music at once. :D

Tri Sestry: Czech rock band, almost like Korpiklaani, only with Czech lyrics. :)

Edguy: Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun! Edguy concerts are always funny. I liked this one a lot, too. Only setback: Tobi, Jens and Felix have cut their hair.

Oh, and Joachim Küstner was there as a guitar tech for several bands. :-)

All in all one of the longest but also best festivals I have ever been to!
If I can, I´ll go there next year, too! :)

Sounds cool.... I'm a bit jealous... here nothing happens (on live music side, I mean). We just had Tony Martin band, UDO and Doro last winter. Well... Tony Martin show was awsome, lots of old stuff, I really enjoyed it. The guys of the band are cool, it's nice to see that a master of rock like Geoff Nicholls (Black Sabbath keyboards) is such a sweet, kind person.

UDO did a great show! Absolutely! He rocks! But in all honesty, he looks like a very cold person, when the show was over he didn't stop a single minute for signing autographs or saying hi to the fans who were waiting for him. He was...well, almost unkind. And that's something I hate... people pay to see their shows and without those kids, their career as musicians wouldn't exist. At least it would be fair to say thanks and give a smile. Btw, the show was great.

As for Doro... oh Lord... It wasn't a real show, we all expected a full time show, but she was there only to introduce her new cd and sang only three songs at the end of an awful Iron Maiden cover band show. And those three songs were really bad. No voice and no energy at all. But she was great aftershow. She stood for the rest of the evening signing autographs and taking pictures with the kids; looks like a very sweet lady, when I left the disco, she was still there with the fans! What a pity she wasn't that great on stage.

You see, I definitely need some good loud metal show.... but it seems there's nothing going on around here... there has been the Gods of Metal Festival in Milano, but I had to work and couldn't go there... :(
