Hi all,
A friend of mine sent to me these fascinating pictures of a submerged aircraft, probably a two-stellar engined bomber,
placed on the bottom of the Adriatic Sea out of Pola, 20 miles from Rimini.
Unfortunately, the water was not perfectly clear. My friend urgently needs informations about its possible identification, if possible.
I may also contact her for more clarifications, if you need.
Thanking you all with kind regards,
Marco

A detail of the wheel. The plane probably ditched, that's why the wheels are still closed.

It looks like a B.24.

The only inscription, as far as I can see, is this one:
PROP GOV. JUNCT
the brave lady who found this plane said to me that this part
came from one of the two engine.
The wreck is covered by old nets. They only saw this little part, picking it up to the surface.
Niels, we need your help.. :I

Marco,
do you say it might be a twin engined bomber because she only saw two engines?
Cheers

Hi All.
Looking at the pic with the wheel,I don't think it is a B24 as the wheel recess would be part of the outer lower engine cowling and you would also see the large wheel strut.

i agree with Martin. i dont think this is a liberator. the diameter of the wheel compared to the tyre is far too small to be a B 24.

Looking at the pictures I guess we have to ask if we are really looking at a multi engined a/c. The engine looks like an R-1820/R-1830 or a R-2600. What makes me think of a Grumman Avenger?....
PS: wondering if ever any parts have been found of B-17 42-30416 (340BS/97BG) which exploded over the Adriatic abeam Choggia on March 11 1944. A close friend of mine lost his father who was the pilot. He never got to know his father as he was born 2 months later...

i dont think its an Avenger Paul. you would be able to see the landing strut on the outside of the wheel.

Dear all,
Thanks very much for this very interesting opinion. I am quite surprised, we all supposed this wreck to be a B24. Of course, I am ready to think to other planes.. :n57:
I am going to contact my friend, the lady who found this wreck, in order to notice her your comments. Maybe she will be able, during the next explorations, to find more down there.

Hi Roy,
Maybe this is a strutless one as I don't see any traces of a strut.....

I have the MACR 10915 for a b24G that ditched approx 20 miles off Panini Dec 25 1944. tail 42-78266, AC Name was Racy Tomato. I have a friend that her Grandfather was aboard that AC and is KIA. i think thi is your plane. reason was engine trouble feathered, nothing further..
