    Seven Year Itch/Der siebenjährige Krieg
A couple of months ago, I borrowed the dvd of BBC's 1971 adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper's Last of the Mohicans.

At that time, I had not thought I would post images here for you-- I only thought to take some screen caps of the lovely 19th century fashions. (Sorry!) I wish I had images of the heroes and villains! Perhaps I can take some later. For now, here is what I have.

While Col. Monroe fights the Seven Years' War in the New World, his daughters keep a busy social calendar attending balls and parties in Scotland.

The beautiful, dark-haired Miss Cora Monroe is the eldest sister, as in the novel. (The Daniel Day-Lewis version reverses the sisters' fates.) Her fair-haired sister Alice is played by the lovely Joanna David, perhaps best known, now, as dear Aunt Gardiner in BBC's 1995 mini series of Pride and Prejudice.

    (The HAIR, Louisa!)

And how could they tell this story without some older ladies gossiping about the Monroe sisters?

Fast forward and we are in the New World (in what is now part of New York state). The ladies prepare to leave Fort Edward to be reunited with their father at Fort William Henry.
    (Aren't their redingotes wonderful?)

At Fort William Henry they are at last reunited with the colonel. And there is to be a party that evening!

I took one screen cap of their escape by canoe after they are attacked upon leaving Fort William Henry.
You can see our handsome hero, Hawkeye, in the rear of the canoe.

I very much enjoyed this version. The story is told very well, and there are many fine performances. Most of the characters are more fleshed-out than they are in the film version. And so much more of the story is included.

It was a little bit of a shock to see the natives portrayed in the style of the old stereotypes, but things were different in the 1970s (and this is even more true for the time during which Cooper wrote the novel). I do prefer the way Uncas and Chingachgook are portrayed in the film version, but I think they are still very noble and dignified in the BBC version.

And here are some images taken at the site of the real Fort Edward, in the Adirondack Mountains area of New York state. I took these photos last year.

(About 6 or 7 years ago, we visited Fort William Henry Museum, but I didn't have a digital camera back then!)

I'm sorry that these are all the images I have (for now), but I will borrow the dvd again and post more another time. Thanks for looking!

usually i'd say: only go borrow it once more, if you wish to see it again, not for working reasons. but to be honest, i'm quite keen to see, what uncas and hawkeye are like and how the BBC dealed with such an outdoor-topic during their big studio-time :ja:
