Bovingdon Airfield , Herts , UK
    More photos...
Here are a few B&W photos I took for an assignment ; The control tower
and outbuildings at Bovingdon Airfield, Herts, UK, about 1981.
    Sadly,none of these buildings remain.

Hi Dave, its sad to see these buildings and towers disappear. so much history lost forever.
as you know, part of one of the runways or taxiways was used as a race track until recently. attached is a photo taken in 1978 with the control tower in the background

    Cheers
    Roy

    Great Photo Roy !!!

When watching the racing I sometimes stood up in the Control Tower
to get a different view of the track !!!
Sad indeed that its all now gone - including the racetrack !!!

Of course the run-ways and taxi ways were also used for film-making.
Hanover Street with Harrison Ford was made here. Myself and friends
used to go up there when filming was on hoping to see the lovely Lesley
Anne Down, who was in the film also !!!

    Hi All.
Yes very sad and as you all say, " all that history gone forever".It makes you think if they were to demolish all that to day could they have been stopped as they could have become LISTED BUILDINGS and been saved as part of our British Heritage. Please tell what has happened to the rest of the airfield know, dont tell me they have built new homes and a super market!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Regards.
    Martin

    Hi Martin.
The airfield still exhists as such, there are still some runways and taxiways. It is still fenced off from general public access, apart from
weekends when the main runway is used as a market and parking
    for the market.
There are no houses or supermarkets on the site, however, a prison was
built there in the early 1990's (cant recall exact date), in the south
western corner of the airfield. In Roys picture above, looking at the
control tower, the prison is about hundred yards beyond where the
    control tower was.
There used to be lots of small hangers , store buildings etc, etc., but
nothing remains now. I drive past it virtually every day, so keep an eye
on whats happening, but nothing new has been built because of the MOD
ownership and restrictions on the site. There is also alot of private
    farmland adjoining the runways.
I will see if I can get a few up to date photos and post them on here....
mind you, not sure there will be much of interest...

Dave, i think you might have the date wrong. i was delivering stuff to the prison when they were building it. im pretty sure that was in the late 80s. maybe around 86/87?

    Cheers

    Hi all.
Thanks for the up date Dave but it does upset me at times, all our history will be gone for ever. The main two airfields where I grew up were Finningley and Lindholme near Doncaster South Yorkshire both with lots of history and both part of bomber Command during WW11.The latter Lindholme is now an all singing and dancing prison and Finningley is now called Robinhood airport and I can remember when they had vulcans. they could be airborne in four minuites and made lote of noise.
    memories!!!!!!!!!!!!
    regards
    Martin
