Hi all,
here are the parts I've found on the Island of Vis, Croatia. I think the parts are from an American aircraft, since I've found the earphone nearby, and it was made by U.S.A. There is a wing or horizontal stabilizer buried in the sand under the water, but I couldn't took the photos, because I didn't have underwater camera at the time.
I hope somebody would be able to recognize those parts. It looks to me like a B-24 parts, but i'm not sure of course. Bytheway, aircraft was painted in olive drab colour.
Thanks,
Fox

Hi Paul,
the plane on the website you found is B-17G 44-6630 of 97th B.G., which ditched near the Island of Vis on November 6th 1944. The aircraft is well preserved, almoust intacted and in one peace. I think it could be the most preserved B-17 underwater wreckage in the world. The depth is about 72 meters. Well, more than one hundred Alied planes crashed or ditched near the Island of Vis during the WW2, since there was a small emergency airfield on the Island. When I was there, I was able to locate the parts of one more aircraft, a B-24 which ditched near the island.
Those parts on the photos, are from the some other aircraft which I found in the small bay on island. I couldn't identify the parts, so maybe some of you would be able identify, what type of aircraft those parts belonged. I wish I took the better photos, when I was there. I'm new on the forum, so I'm still learning how to attach the photos in the post. Thanks for taking a look Paul,
Fox

Hi Fox,
Thanks, I was aware of this 97 BG ship. The father of a very close friend is still reported MIA over the Adriatic returning from a mission to Padua (I) March 12 1944 with the 340BS/97BG...My friend was born just 2 months after this so he never got to know his Dad...
Regards,
Paul

Hi Paul,
yes, very sad story. Sometimes the researchers can be very helpfull for those people who are still searching for the information about their family members. I hope your friend will find more information about his father some day in the future. Regards,
Fox

Hi Fox,
some of those parts should have numbers on them. they are usually small and can be hard to see. they would help identify the type of aircraft
Cheers
Roy
