    Wissenswertes über Stairway To Heaven
"Stairway to Heaven" is a famous and influential song by British rock group Led Zeppelin.

One of the most requested songs on U.S. FM radio stations, "Stairway to Heaven", from Led Zeppelin's fourth album, was never released officially as a single. It did however appear as a promo disc in the United States, on an Australian acoustic EP and in the 1990s as a 20th anniversary promo issue. The song had its beginnings during the sessions for Led Zeppelin III at Bron-Yr-Aur, Wales, but was completed at Headley Grange, Hampshire, and finally recorded at Island Studios, London, in December 1970. It is not entirely clear whether a movie title (see below) was an inspiration for the song or the source of the song title.

The song was first played live at Belfast's Ulster Hall on March 5, 1971; it was performed at every Led Zeppelin concert thereafter, usually as part of a final encore from 1975 to 1980. "Stairway" was also played at Live Aid in 1985 and the fortieth anniversary celebration of Atlantic Records in 1988, and by Jimmy Page as an instrumental version on his solo tours.

"Stairway to Heaven" is one of the biggest-selling sheet music publications in rock history.
Although the song is a popular set choice for cover bands throughout the world, the iconic status and unique structure of the song have precluded the recording of many cover versions by established artists. A few attempts at a straightforward cover have been made over the years, notably by hair metal band Great White. German dance group Far Corporation produced a widely-panned version, and singer Dolly Parton recorded a country-bluegrass version. Many other covers tend to be ironic or humorous in intent, notably Dread Zeppelin's reggae/Elvis-inspired version and Pat Boone's lounge take.

    Lyrics
The lyrics, written by Led Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant next to an evening log fire, were inspired by his search for spiritual perfection. A seminal influence was the book Magic Arts in Celtic Britain by Lewis Spence, which Plant had recently read and contained references to May Queens, pipers, and bustling hedgerows. The mystical lady is still a mystery but when asked about it Plant simply responded, "Julie Conlon".

    "Stairway to Heaven" lyrics
    Music
Musically, the song takes the form of a multi-movement suite, with a quiet introduction featuring acoustic guitar and Flute gradually giving way to a slow electric middle section and finally a crashing hard rock final section. This form would influence many other rock artists, notably Queen, who would use a similar structure for their opus "Bohemian Rhapsody". The guitar part opens with an Am-Fmaj7 chord progression with a chromatic descending bassline A-G#-G-F#-F. John Paul Jones contributed wooden bass recorders in the opening section and Hohner electric piano in the middle section. The extended Jimmy Page guitar solo in the song's final section was played for the recording on a 1958 Fender Telecaster plugged into a Supro amplifier. Three different solos were recorded with Page deciding to keep the one which he felt best suited the theme of the song. The other guitar parts were played using a Harmony acoustic guitar and Fender Electric XII (12-string), both can be heard on the left and right recording channels respectively. For later live versions Page switched to using a double-necked 6/12 1968 Gibson EDS-1275 which was custom built by Roger Griffin of Gibson's West Coast Custom Shop.
    Trivia

Critics of rock and roll songs (and of Led Zeppelin in particular) have occasionally alleged that a backward message is recorded into "Stairway to Heaven." If a portion of the song is played backwards, then supposedly words beginning with "Oh here's to my sweet Satan" can be heard. Various Christian fundamentalists have interpreted different lyrics from the allegedly-backmasked portion, which most agree to be the lines beginning with "If there's a bustle in your hedgerow...". The theory was advanced by Michael Myers, Jacob Aranza, and Jeff Godwin among others. Led Zeppelin have always ignored such claims, the only comment coming from Swan Song Records which issued the statement: "Our turntables only play in one direction - forwards".

The tendency for many aspiring guitar players to learn to play the introduction to the song was spoofed in the 1992 Mike Myers movie Wayne's World when a "No Stairway to Heaven" regulation is enforced at a music store visited by the title character.

In the early 1990s, each episode of the Australian chat show The Money or the Gun ended with a different group performing an idiosyncratic cover version of "Stairway to Heaven". From a diverse range that included an Elvis impersonator, Kate Ceberano, and the Doug Anthony All Stars, the best remembered is Rolf Harris's version (complete with didgeridoo and wobble board), which reached the Top 10 on the UK singles charts. Harris is said to have received death threats from fans of the song for his version of this iconic rock anthem. A compilation album, Stairways to Heaven, was put out on the Atlantic label, featuring versions of the song by The Australian Doors Show, The Beatnix, John Paul Young, Kate Ceberano, Leonard Teale, Michael Turkic, The Ministry Of Fun, Neil Pepper, Pardon Me Boys, Robyne Dunn, The Rock Lobsters, Rolf Harris, Sandra Hahn, Vegimite Reggae and others.

A novelty song featuring the music and arrangement of the song combined with the lyrics to the Theme from Gilligan's Island (which has a similar chord progression) was recorded by the San Francisco band Little Roger and the Goosebumps and often featured on the Dr. Demento radio program. Singer Plant has described this as his favorite cover version of the song.

A heavy metal band Down named their second album A Bustle in Your Hedgerow, which is a quotation from this song.

The Butthole Surfers, in an act of parody and/or tribute, released an album in 1988 called Hairway to Steven.

Frank Zappa covered the song during his 1988 world tour and appeared on the 1991 live album The Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life.

The first downbeat of Stairway to Heaven occurs at 4:20
    False Jimi Hendrix version
One version of the song circulating on the Internet is a supposed "reggae remix" by Jimi Hendrix. In fact, he died a year before the song was released. Even if he were alive, it is unlikely that he would have made such a track. The actual song that is generally circulated around is a cover of "Stairway to Heaven" by Frank Zappa at one of his last live shows.

    ‘There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold. . .'

This week's music note moves from one of the most well-known bands of all time to one of the most well-known songs of all time. So, without further rambling (fans of the following band will get the pun), strap in and read the story behind "Stairway to Heaven."
"Stairway to Heaven," for those who live under a rock or are completely devoid of musical taste, is the quintessential Led Zeppelin song. Whether you're a "Led Hed," or someone badly in need of "Leducation," chances are you've heard this eight-minute and two-second piece of glory.
Where did the song come from? Jimmy Page (Zeppelin's guitarist) wrote the music over what Robert Plant (the greatest rock vocalist ever) called "a long period of time," though most of it was composed one night at Bron-Yr-Aur. (This was a place where the band spent a lot of time hanging out and writing - and yes that's how it's spelled.) Plant later added the lyrics and the rest is history.
But what does it all mean, you ask? Most of the lyrics were improvised by Plant while recording at Headley Grange in 1971, and many of those lyrics stayed on the song. Page was strumming the chords and Plant had a pen and paper and found himself writing what would become the opening lines: "There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold / And she's buying a stairway to heaven." Needless to say, he was very proud of himself. I could go on for at least 12 columns about the lyrics, but luckily Plant summarized it best when he said that the song was about "a woman getting everything she wanted without giving anything back." There are, however, clear references to other things such as the works of fantasy author J.R.R. Tolkien who was a large influence on the band.
Other interesting tidbits about the song include the fact that it is one of the most popular sheet music publications in history (sorry Mozart). Also, even though it was never released as a single (as the band refused to cut the length of the song), it still became the most popular non-single songs ever, and is constantly played by classic rock stations, including Toronto's own Q107.
The allegations that, when played backwards, the song has hidden satanic messages is (according to the band) untrue, but the issue of back masking is for another edition. With that, I sign off once again. I hope you've enjoyed this week's music note and tune in next week for another music tale of epic proportions.

Hawaii's path to 'heaven' is forbidden

By Dan Nakaso and Eloise Aguiar, USA TODAY
KANEOHE, Hawaii — In a state known for spectacular views, the mountain peak known as Puu Keahiakahoe may provide the most magnificent.

    It also presents two problems:

    • Despite the city of Honolulu spending nearly a million dollars five years ago to replace the steps that lead to this breathtaking view of the windward side of Oahu, the peak remains off-limits to both tourists and residents.

    • That prohibition doesn't stop hikers from around the world from trudging through a rain forest and eluding private security guards to climb what's known as the "Stairway to Heaven" in order to get to the top of the misty, cloud-covered Koolau Mountain Range.

David Dieterle, who runs a website spotlighting Hawaii attractions — hawaiiweb.com — says the "Stairway to Heaven" page is one of the site's most visited.

"It gets a crazy amount of traffic," Dieterle said. "We have really big feedback about it and a lot of negative feedback from the Kaneohe people who get very upset about it. They say, 'Remove it. It's closed. Why are you doing this?' Tourists e-mail us asking for directions to get there. Everyone wants to know how to get there."

Neighbors at the base of the hike complain of being bombarded by trespassing tourists, trash and noise. They say city officials should have torn down the rusted stairs five years ago instead of replacing them with an attractive nuisance that has bogged down the city in land negotiations and made it vulnerable to lawsuits if someone gets hurt.

"They should have just torn down the stairs — end of liability, end of problems," resident John Sabas said. "It hasn't worked so far."

The Stairway to Heaven — also known as the Haiku Stairs — originally was built out of wood during World War II in 1942 for the U.S. Navy's Haiku radio station. Constant rain and mist wore out the wooden stairs, which were replaced with metal ones 10 years later.

By the 1980s, the metal steps were rusted, broken or missing. Large gaps in the stairway were replaced with makeshift ropes that allowed hikers to shimmy up the slippery mountainside. In 1987, the city officially closed it, making the Stairway to Heaven Hawaii's most popular outlaw hike.

As word of the climb continued to spread on the Internet, city officials feared they were exposed to liability because of the stairs' condition. They had the 3,922 steps replaced at a cost of $875,000 and hoped to reopen the trail.

The plan to reopen has been complicated because the handful of access points to the stairs lie on land owned by different entities, including the city, state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, state Department of Land and Natural Resources and Hawaii's largest private landowner, Kamehameha Schools.

Today, the prospect of public access to the trail remains uncertain, said Jeff Coelho, director of Honolulu's Customer Services department. "The complexity of issues include everything from liability and risk to access and maintenance," Coelho said in an e-mail.

In the meantime, Honolulu officials spend nearly $50,000 annually for private security to guard the Haiku Stairs 12 hours a day, seven days a week, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Coelho said.

Even so, hikers still make the climb.

Dave Roskelley, 38, of Alpine, Utah, said he read about the stairway on the Internet and decided to make the hike during a trip to Oahu in February.

"While researching this hike, I came across several sources that claimed that the stairs were open while other sources stated the stairs were closed," Roskelley said. "The available sources of hike information seem to contradict one another. I even asked a local, who stated that the stairs are not closed — just certain trailhead access points."

Roskelley was concerned about upsetting nearby residents, so he had his wife, Lynda, drop him off near the mouth of the trail rather than leave the car in front of someone's house. "I didn't want to disturb folks in the neighborhood. I know it's a sensitive subject."

A group called the Friends of Haiku Stairs insists the climb can still be properly managed, if and when the land issues are resolved. The group gets frequent queries about the status of the stairs and always responds that they are closed, said John Goody, president of the Friends of Haiku Stairs.

But one day, Goody hopes to see the Stairway to Heaven reopened.

"We believe the stairs will be open because it's a public resource and a few people shouldn't have a right to prevent the public from making responsible use of the stairs," Goody said.

Nakaso and Aguiar report for The Honolulu Advertiser.
