Marco - 11.09.2009, 18:11Wellington wreck
Good evening,
I came on this very interesting forum from suggestion of a member of Lancaster Forum, http://lancaster-archive.com/forum/index.php .
My name is Marco. I found the supposed wreck of a Lancaster MkIII British bomber on the Alps, this summer. I am currently trying to discover its history, and above all, to confirm the identification of the plane, only made by historical documents and archives.
The problem is, the crash site is located at more than 2900 meters on the Alps, in a really hard place, with extreme inclination and an instable rocky soil. Furthermore, there is snow for 11 months every year, 12 in the 2009, unluckily.
These are the photos of the parts I found. May you help me, please? I also found the supposed part of a machine gun, and some inscriptions, too. Where should I post all these images, please?
Thank you,
Marco
the title of this thread has been changed from "Supposed Lancaster wreck" as it is now known to be a Wellington crashsite.. Roy

I forgot to say that this plane crashed after having been hit by the flak over Milano. It crashed exploding, the most part of these rests are burned. There are no more corps, because the crew had been buried in a local cemetery and, after the WWII, into the British War Cemetery in Milano.

Marco,
this photo show part of the wing construction.
The other parts you have found, are typical remains from a crash site.
Maybe you find more and we can help here to identify the aircraft and crew. Do you have informations about a possible time of the crash ?
Regards
Nils

Thank you both, Sir,
Very kind.
The historical sources I read till now state that this was a British Lancaster MkIII bomber, codenumber LM339.
It was hit by the flak over Milano, during August, 1943. It crashed on the mountains of the Valle d'Aosta (Aosta Valley), at more than 2900 meters.
The problem is, or better, are (!):
1) I am finding many aged persons who say, without knowing themselves before, that this plane crashed during November, 1944. They also have some precise remember. For instance, during this night, all the windows of an alpage crashed inwards the house.
2) Neither the RAF, nor the historicians I heard before, have never known the correct point of impact of this supposed Lancaster. They are only used to place the crash site on the Mount Nery, while the plane I found was not there.
I would only like to identify with certainty this wreck, to write something about its last flight. The problem is its position (!) and, above all, that during the post war years many people came up to take away the most part of the rests. Above all, the aluminium ones. Wings, tail, cockpit.. All.
Please, may you help me to identify it?
Obviously I can post more images, if you need, Sir.
Thank you. :n108:

Thank you Matteo for you gentle words,
and above all, for your encouragement,
unluckily it is very hard to identify a plane from such few parts, and from just few inscriptions.
I wanted to climb up there before winter, but the current meteo did not allowed that, because of the first snow.
if you are able to identify some parts, or even to suggest me whatsoever archive or expert to ask for infos, I would be in debt with you. :n108:

Could you post the sign of the stamp and the number on the second photo ?
Is the number "34-3" (first photo) complete ?
Edit: Thanks for the pm Marco, I read the pm after this posting !
The number "34" indicated a part of the dashboards. But it looks too solid for a dashboard, so I think one digit before the "34" is missing.
Parts made by Vickers have most five digits, the last two digits indicated the part.

Dear Pathfinder,
Thank you. I have great problems with my photocamera. The most difficult part to shot is the symbol, hidden by the metal parts.
May I draw it by hand?

Good evening,
I am going to upload some new images of a new part, taken from my wreck from other people, this summer.
What do you think? May it be a part of a seat?
I see that there is a belt, with a kind of rusty hook.
Thank you.
M.

Yes that is a seat. I think it is the wireless operator or flight engineers seat?
Re: Wellington wreck
Pathfinder - 16.11.2009, 18:50
The number 28527 is from centre fuselage.
If the number 34-3 is a part number, it is from a dashboard

Thank you all very much. Is it possible to understand which seat did it was? and, above all, its place in the plane?
As you know, I have the crewlist. it would be possible to find the name of this operator.

Dear all,
Yesterday evening I saw again this part of the seat.
We read the following, very weak numbers:
6 0 5 (on the metallic belt),
IN or IH (on the alloy part of the seat).
I know it is very few, but..!
