    Monday, the 13th :

VIS (Vatian Information Service) - At 10.30 a.m. today, Benedict XVI left Rome by plane and, following an hour-long flight, arrived at Caselle airport in the northern Italian city of Turin. From there he travelled by helicopter to the residence of Les Combes in the region of Valle d'Aosta where he will spend a sixteen-day vacation.
As he did in 2005 and 2006, the Pope will stay in a chalet belonging to the Salesian Order, the same as that in which John Paul II often used to spend his holidays. The building, made of wood and stone, has two floors and is surrounded by a large garden. It stands at an altitude of 1200 meters and has views over Mont Blanc and other mountains on the French-Italian frontier as well as over the Italian-Swiss Alps.
The only two public ceremonies scheduled for the Pope's vacation are on Sunday 19 July and Sunday 26 July. On 19 July he will pray the Angelus at Piazza Ruggia in front of the parish church of Sts. Peter and Solutor at Romano Canavese in the diocese of Ivrea. On 26 July he will pray the Angelus in the residence of Les Combes.
Benedict XVI will stay at Les Combes - located some 20 kilometres from the city of Aosta within the municipality of Introd - until 29 July.
Following his vacation in Valle d'Aosta, the Pope will move to his summer residence of Castelgandolfo, 30 kilometres south of Rome, where he will remain until the end of September.

The Pope's next apostolic trip, the thirteenth since the start of his pontificate, will take him to the Czech Republic from 26 to 28 September.

    Monday, the 13th :

DPA - Pope Benedict XVI arrived Monday in the northwestern Italian Alpine town of Les Combes di Introd to begin a two-week holiday that follows an intense first half of 2009 for the 82-year-old pontiff. Benedict first flew by plane from Rome to Turin, before boarding a helicopter and touching down just after midday on a grassy field.

Arriving at Turin's Caselle airport he was greeted by the archbishop of Turin, Cardinal Severino Poletto, the Prefect, Paolo Padoin, the mayor of Turin Sergio Chiamparino, the President of the Province, Antonio Saitta, and the Vice-President of the Region, Paul Peveraro.

The pontiff came from a busy last week at the Vatican, including the publication of his social encyclical - calling for financial and economic guidelines to be based on ethical principles - and on Friday, his first meeting with US President Barack Obama.

Hosting Benedict during his to stay in Les Combes di Introd, is a chalet which has been equipped with a new piano, allowing the pontiff, a keen hobby musician, to indulge in one of his favourite pastimes.

Far from Rome's torrid summer, the gardens outside offer the pope a spectacular, snowcapped view of Europe's highest peak, Mont Blanc which straddles the border with nearby France. Before his return to Rome on July 29, Benedict's only two planned public engagements are Sunday Angelus prayer ceremonies, including one scheduled for July 19 in Romano Canavese, located some 100 kilometres away in Italy's Piedmont region.

Pope on vacation in the Italian Alps

ANSA - The helicopter carrying Pope Benedict landed at Les Combes just before 12.30 local time. He was welcomed by local representatives and 12 children aged between 4 and 5 years from the local nursery school with their teachers.

They all wore the local costume of black trousers with a white shirt and red vest. They wished the Pope a happy holiday in Italian, French and the local dialect. They also gave him flowers and a cup of friendship with many drinking spouts for drinking water and a wooden cup made to recall the Holy GrailThe Pope caressed each child and Georg Ganswein had to rescue his zucchetto which blew off in the wind.

Leaving the helicopter the Pope remarked "This place is truly beautiful, or I would not be back here." He also said it would be a vacation of rest and work "but mostly rest."

The Pope will return to the second part of "Jesus of Nazareth" which had to be put aside for the encyclical. His "Benedictine" routine of prayer and work will remain more or less as normal. No excursions have been planned although he may visit local shrines as he has in the past. He likes to recite the Rosary while walking and this will be done in Les Combes as it is in the Vatican and Castel Gandolfo.

    Monday, 13th :

The Pope spent Monday afternoon resting and did not leave the villa at all even for a short walk. He arrived tired from the journey and from days of intense activities in Rome.

A few excursions have been proposed and these will be decided on in the coming days. For the most part the Pope is expected to remain around the chalet, with its magnificent view of Mont Blanc which he can see from the windows and the balcony of his first floor suite.

The villa is not large. Built by the Silesians for Pope John Paul II in the year 2000, there is a kitchen and dining room on the ground floor, together with two bedrooms and a bathroom for the sisters - now the C&L housekeepers. The Pope's sitting room and bedroom suite are on the first floor, overlooking the valley and the mountains. Also on the second floor are a chapel and a bedroom suite for the Pope's secretary.

Most of the staff is accommodated in the nearby Silesian house which is much larger.

The Pope loves the tranquillity of the place. One of the paths he walks on goes through woods to a spectacular belvedere overlooking the Aosta valley. A rough wooden cross has been set up there and a seating area where he can pray and read in the shade. A small statue of the Virgin stands near the house and there is also a path with the Stations of the Cross. Outside the gardens the Pope can walk on a small secure road bordering the meadow where harebells and other wild flowers thrive.

ANSA reports that the two cats, which often turn up at the Silesian residence, have so far not appeared. They may be frightened off by the security staff and the activity in the usually peaceful woods and meadows.

There was a little argument with a journalist yesterday. As the Pope arrived in Les Combes, Roberto Guscelli, a journalist from a Valle d'Aosta weekly magazine "Valley News" asked the Pope if he thought there was more hope for Africa after the recent G8 meeting. The Pope replied that he thought the meeting had gone well. Shortly afterwards the journalist was "dragged by two gendarme to a distant office" and had his accreditation removed because, he was told, he should not have directly questioned the Pope. After some discussion with Vatican security his pass was returned.

Next Sunday the Pope will arrive by helicopter at 11.15 at Romano Canavese. After being greeted by the authorities he will go to the Piazza where he will preside at the Angelus. It will follow a Mass celebrated by Cardinal Bertone. He will be presented with a some of the local specialities cultivated in this rich agricultural area.

The Pope will then have a private lunch near the house where Cardinal Bertone was born.

    Tuesday, 14th :

There really isn't any news about the Pope's vacation today. He has stayed out of the public eye. This is a summary of what Apcom have come up with. The chalet is pretty full - four people seems a lot for such a small house - and the valet does not appear to be one of those in the villa. I would have thought a man on vacation would have found a valet more useful than a secretary but one can't imagine Monsignor Ganswein agreeing to muck in at the Silesian house.

Today was a second day of relaxation for Pope Benedict XVI, who arrived yesterday morning in Les Combes in the Val d'Aosta for his summer holiday.

Today he walked in the woods around the chalet at the foot of Mont Blanc; and spent the day in prayer with a special thought to Alessandro Di Lisio, corporal killed in Afghanistan.

The Pope was quickly informed of the death and received the news with deep sorrow. He prayed in the chapel of the chalet and felt close to the relatives of the victim and the two soldiers wounded.

Even on vacation the Pope is kept informed of the major Italian and international news. His entourage keeps him constantly informed and today the prayers did not have to wait.

Having arrived yesterday the Pope is spending time resting and walking around the chalet, reading and relaxing. There is also a piano so he can enjoy his passion for music.

The Pope's day, even in the mountains is similar to his days in the Vatican. In the morning the alarm rings early. There is Mass in the chapel, then lunch, reading and writing alternating some work, with moments of meditation and prayer. It is likely that during these 17 days of vacation, the Pope will write the speeches for his visit to the Czech Republic in September and also work on the second part his book on Jesus of Nazareth.

After lunch this year, thanks to an outdoor umbrella that has been placed in the garden with a barbecue, the Pope can stay for a short rest, and then conclude the day with a walk while praying the rosary, usually in the company of Georg Ganswein, on the paths that surround the chalet and in the woods.

Traditional local foods have been sent to the Pope. It is thought the Silesians of Chatillon have provided the pastries from Villeneuve, the cakes and the strudel and the baker Frassi di Arvier is providing the bread.

Two of the housekeepers have been brought along to cook. Along with Ganswein they live in the chalet.

At the moment the Pope has not yet decided on the trips he will take but a helicopter is on standby for the whole of his stay.

    Wednesday, 15th :

The Pope has still not emerged from his secluded chalet where he is sensibly taking a good rest, so the press are interviewing locals for some backgrouns material. Some of today's news - although much of it is repetitive.

    The Angelus at Romano Canavese

ASCA - Only the authorities and the residents of Romano Canavese will be given a pass to access the Piazza for the Angelus on Sunday. Others will be able to watch on screens set up at various points around the town.

The Pope's helicopter will land at 11.30 on the Olivetti field. He will travel by car to the piazza.

After the Angelus the Pope will meet Cardinal Bertone's family and have lunch with them in their house.

The Pope will teturn to Piedmont next year - to Turin for the exposition of the Shroud. He will celebrate Mass in front of the cathedral.

It is extremely unusual for the Pope to have lunch in a private house - at least publicly - even when that house belongs to the family of one of his staff. A discreet private visit when he is "off duty" is another matter. The Bishop of Ivrea would normally be expected to host the Pontiff as Romano Canavese is in his diocese and Ivrea is only 6 miles away. What will happen after lunch? Will the Pope take a nap at Casa Bertone or return to Les Combes immediately? The Pope could easily have received the family privately so this is a rather interesting visit - a papal pilgrimage to Casa Bertone, and during the papal holiday too.

    The Pope's Table

ANSA - There is the inevitable strudel, but also organic vegetables from the vegetable garden, and wild berries about which he is passionate. Foods suitable for the high altitude and prepared by local suppliers arrive each day for the Pope's table in Les Combes. The organisation of the menus for the Pope, his household and his considerable retinue of gendarmerie and security is primarily the responsibility of the Silesians of Chatillon, who also organise most of the supplies. Don Thomas Scotto, the 'economo', arrives every morning with his van laden with fish, meat, fresh fruit, pasta, cheeses and even brooms and dusters that - he confesses - are needed for the daily cleaning the house.

He told journalists that the Pope had this year expressed a desire to have blueberries, raspberries, wild strawberries. Today he delivered two baskets, not only for the Pope but also for all the employees.

Don Thomas has also brought a local liquor, made of juniper, much appreciated in Les Combes, although not by Ratzinger who does not drink spirits. He drinks orange juice with his meals.

The bread is supplied by a baker in Arvier, another village in the valley. "Every morning at 6.30", says Ettore Frassy the owner - "the staff of the Silesian colony of Les Combes (which is next to the Pope's chalet) come to collect four bocconcini and four wholemeal loaves. Frassy recalls when John Paul II ordered the black bread. ". 'It is a great honour for me" he says "to be the only baker to the popes in these mountains".

For desserts, there are the pastries of Villeneuve: This week the new owner, Signora. Patrizia will send the Pope a cake of raspberries and thyme and a strudel. For vegetables, in addition to external supplies, there is also an organic vegetable garden, cultivated by natural methods, which is "medieval" in design. It has different varieties of lettuce, tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, celery and herbs and spices. Each day the women from C&L pick many vegetables for lunch under the sunshade set up in the garden. At the table there is also the secretary Don Georg and Gabriel the butler. As yet the barbecue has not been used.

Suggestions for excursions have been made to the Pope, but he has expressed a desire to have a rest before making any trips.

    The story behind the walk

ANSA - There are few houses on the quiet road which leads to the Pope's villa, but there is one which is owned by the Chevrere family. But at six o'clock most days when the Pope is in residence they are requested to remain indoors so as not to disturb him when he takes his walk with Georg Ganswein.

In June this year the family moved to their beautiful house in wood and stone, in the woods and meadows of Les Combes having previously owned a small chalet. The family consists of mother Irma and three children - Irene - married with a daughter, Stephanie - Renato Bruna with his wife and their two children, Alexis and 7 years and Denise the youngest aged seven months. They say it an honour to spend vacations as the neighbours of the Pope "It is a little strange says Bruna, "You share the same landscapes, you breathe the same air, we watch the same sunsets. These days, after the pontiff fell and broke a wrist, we feel more affection and involvement with him. However there are problems.

When the Pope rakes his walk and prays the Rosary at about six we are asked to return home so as not to disturb him." So every day the family sees through their window Pope Benedict, dressed in the traditional white cassock, and accompanied by his secretary walking in front of their garden. For Alexis the presence of the pope also means a total ban on cycling outside of the garden. Walking on the path from the back of the house is also banned because it leads to the new small wooden chalets created for the pope, where he can rest and read. "If we want to take a walk - Bruna says - we must take the car and go to a different area."

These little sacrifices are rewarded because at least once during the visit the family are permitted to remain on the road and to greet the pontiff.
