    Mustang Engine starter
    Hi all,

the plate of the Engine starter is now a little bit cleaned.

    We can read on it:

    ECLIPSE AIRCRAFT ENGINE STARTER

    TYPE 840, MODEL 7, SERIAL NO BW 223-7, MFR'S DWG. NO C_898 33, VOLTS 24, STYLE A, CLUTCH 280,
    PATENDED.......(many many numbers).....
    ......
    .....
    .....
    BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION
    ECLIPSE PIONNER DIVISION
    Teterboro, NJ, Made in USA

Could someone localise the "engine starter in the plane?
Do you have any picture of this part?

    Thanks for help.

    Mathias

    Thanks Pathfinder,

the link you gave is very interestning, and shows how the starter looks like. I presume the modell I found looked like this one.

The manufacturers plate was found with elements from the cockpit (instruments fragments ...) and the the wings, the motor parts being found 50 to 100 meters further on crash site.

Do you know if the starter was in front of, below, over...the engine? It could help to understand the way the plane crashed.

Thanks for your allways very kind help!

    Mathias

Mathias, the starter on a Merlin engine is along the front righthand (starboard) side of the Rolls Royce version so i would think it would be the same on a Packard.

see photos #10 on this link. its a different model but it shows the location of the "coffman starter" fitted to a spitfire

    Hi Roy, and all,

I just found today some picts showing "my" Eclipse Aircraft Engine Starter, and one with in on the Packard Merlin.

    Best regards

    Mathias
