    Forum changes?
    Hi all^^

Tim and Loni talked about some reorganisation of our forum. For me there is no problem in having some changes. When I started it I just met all that came to my head and might be usefull.

So if there are interests please feel free to discuss and I when you found solutions I will try to change it.

I open that thread here to let them explain their thoughts and hope for some nice ideas coming up.

We need a subforum for parties^^'

    Re: Forum changes?

    Strongitharm - 10.06.2009, 00:39

Yup, Manah - and it need to be near the top of the page Loni & I thought.

Currently there are a lot of very rarely use links filling much of the immediately visible forum page when we log in.

    Suggestions are :

    1) Move all the individual guild forums down a level - have a top level (front page) forum called something like 'Guild Announcements', and then put the individual guild forums inside that one page down.

    2) Compress some other things to make the front page more compact - for instance all 3 market forums could be on a second page.

    3) Parties can be split out of pan-guildism, and both those two should be near the top and immediately visible.

    4) Most forum styles highlight when there is a new post in a sub forum right from the front page on down, so we should try to keep the front page small enough s that it more or less fits on one screen then people will see all the new threads highlighted and can click through to see them as they want to.

    5) Currently things like the birthday notice are so far down the page that it is very easy for people like me to miss it completely... I'm not sure if it is possible to move it elsewhere on the page, but compacting the front page and putting many of the forums visible there down a level into sub-forums would make it more accessible.

Looking at the current first page I think that almost all of the front page forums can be compacted into subforums called whatever the group heading for the subforums is currently called (eg - about 12 front page entries could be put as subforums under the 'Ragnorok In General',or perhaps, "General Raganrok Information" or some other similar heading).

It would take one more click to reach some things but would make the whole site more inviting and easier to use. I feel that having a very sprawling front-page is slightly off-putting and confusing. It would also stop the front page being largely full of things that have not change for months or even years... If we have 'Parties', 'Pan Guildism' and 'Players & Characters' all near the top, then these are pages that are useful and will be easier to use and this should keep things more vibrant and active.

Throwing out a complete example front page for further discussion :

Guilds (links to all the individual guild threads)
Parties (new forum for party organising)
    Players & Chars (as current)
    Pan Guildism (as current)
Marketplace (put current 3 underneath as sub forums)
General Ragnarok (put all those underneath this forum)
Roleplaying (as current, put 'where we live' and 'character diaries' here too)
Miscellaneous (as current, could perhaps but forum stuff in here also)
Forum (technical stuff & suggestions for forum together, if not in misc.)
    Contact (as current)

I get about 12-14 items on my front page, depending on font and forum style chosen.

This would give me everything on 1 page, with the 'who is online', 'birthday' and 'shoutbox' sections more or less fitting on the page.

I don't know how much things can be customised on this forum provider - but I personally thing that it would be really nice if it is possible to put the shoutbox either at the top in the header, or down the side of the page in a left or right hand column. Increasingly people will be using widescreen monitor, so making use of the space to the sides is becoming a better idea all the time. If shoutbox & birthday information cold be in a sidebar, and the 'how many people online' information was at the bottom of the screen. With a list of major forums filling the rest of the page then that would be ideal - it would be easy to see at a glance what was happening and so much simpler to use for everyone.

Any thoughts on this? (apologies for long post, but wanted to put it as clearly as I could, which meant examples etc which take many words!)

    Oops, forgot one important thing...

Thanks to Sigi for everything she has done already in making these forums, and apologies in advance for any extra work I might be about to cause her! This is not criticism, it is simply an attempt to help organise and improve something that has grown so much it perhaps needs pruning and tying back a bit (to steal a gardening metaphor ^^)

    Re: Forum changes?

As I said, I have no prob if you all decide some things to be changed.
Using shows what is needed and it is fair to give space to things people are interested in.

Only one prob: if it is more then moving around some threads and creating new parts I will not be able to do it because of my lack of knowledge.
So if there are some constructable things to be done I might need some help or -ideally- give someone access to do it.

btw: we have an phpbb2 forum and got the possibility to convert it to an phpbb3 forum. As far as I understand is it much easier and has more opportunities. If anyone knows if that would be better I can ask to get it converted to v.3

I set up and was server admin for a phpbb2 forum at work, but this was some years ago, will check up on v3 - I expect it will be easier to change things on that than on v2. I'll try to go through the stuff and let you know what I think in the next week.

sorry, was very very slow with this...

Busy at work, and then no internet at home, but here we go :

    http://www.phpbb.com/about/features/

The good stuff is that security is better (though hopefully that is something we never need or notice!).

The better stuff comes from the improvements in private messaging, forum searching, and more stuff like that. It looks as though it should make most things much better - the only thing that worries me slightly is that you can no longer use html in posts, you have to use forum code instead : but I'm sure if that actually affects anyone but perhaps me anyway (I might have used html in one or two early posts I made).

It looks like moving up to phpbb3 is worthwhile.

Post participation tracking and allowing post attachments are particularly useful I think.

I still think that re-organising the front page to a considerably smaller number of folders would be a good thing. phpbb3 seems to allow customisation/editing of templates and schemes, so making I might look into devising a scheme that does some of this if possible, that I can make available and then other people can play with themselves.

    [edit to add]

a little bit more from another source... phpBB3 has a different admin screen, tabbed menu system, that can be a bit fiddly to get used to apparently, but works well once you find things... (like any new menu system for something I guess).

phpBB3 also has a proper sub-forum system built in as standard, so that would likely make the kind of reorganisation I suggested above much simply - make some new front page forums, move a large set of current front page forums to be sub-forums of the current front page forum and everything gets simpler to look at at first glance.

I've not run it myself though, so I can't say how easy this is, just that it looks as though it is properly support by default in phpBB3...

    Re: Forum changes?

    Strongitharm - 12.07.2009, 20:35

    Hmm... another reason to change...

    http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?p=5141765#p5141765

phpBB developers have stopped developing phpBB2 anymore, due to some of the stuff it is built on having moved to newer versions... So sooner or later it will be advisable to be on phpBB3 anyway, as no development means no security patches and eventually someone will find a big enough hole to cause trouble...

For me it would be easier if someone else would start a completely new forum with admin in english.
We can link our old forum there, translate all guides and so on in english for the new forum.

I am not THAT experienced in that work so if anyone would like to do that feel free to^^

    Re: Forum changes?

Hi Loni, that looks like a forum software producer, rather than a forum hosting service.

We need somewhere to actually host the service.

I've got some friends work in hosting to lesser or greater degrees, going to ask around them at the weekend, and found several hosting services (mostly using phpBB3 which is fine by me). One of them that lok interesting so far can be free, but will also provide a better service for £10 per month - this removes ads (and I don't know about you but the ads on here are getting ridiculous - had to install ad-block plugin just to be able to use the forum recently) and gives a great deal of local space for images etc, rather than having to use a plug in remote service that deletes the pictures after a while as is currently used. They also offer full backup services in that fee, so admins can schedule a forum backup anytime they want.

I've no idea whether this lot have a good or a bad reputation though - simply first place I've found - so will be asking people who hopefully know more over the weekend, One friend in particular runs his own email and web server and he might be willing to put us up on his system, for free (or perhaps a few bottles of beer next time I see him ^^) and certainly won;t let pop-up ads etc onto his machines!

Suggestion (if you're still interested ;p):

    Guild section
Strongitharm wrote: Guilds (links to all the individual guild thread)
Parties (new forum for party organising)
    Players & Chars (as current)
    Pan Guildism (as current)
The party forum could be divided into planned party threads and general "looking for share" threads. And I'm not sure where to put it, but a forum for smaller, non-regular events would be nice (Falko's barbecue parties, weddings etc.)

    Ragnarok section
Strongitharm wrote: General Ragnarok (put all those underneath this forum)
Marketplace (put current 3 underneath as sub forums)
Roleplaying (as current, put 'where we live' and 'character diaries' here too)
Maybe add a guide forum with subforums such as quest guides, character guides, mixing items (we could put helpful RO-related links there as well, one pinned thread for all the links?)
    And one for screenshots^^

    Non-Ragnarok section
Strongitharm wrote: Miscellaneous (as current, could perhaps but forum stuff in here also)
For things like rl photos, fun stuff, whatever^^

    Forum & technical section
Strongitharm wrote: Forum (technical stuff & suggestions for forum together, if not in misc.)

    Contact section

So if any of you got ideas too - just post here and find together :D
