    Escape Hatch Halifax MZ376, QB-K
    Good day.
Found this escape hatch on H. P. Halifax Mk. III, MZ376, QB-K crashsite but can't find it back on photos. Where on the plane was this hatch located and does anyone have -clear- photos of it?

    Much appreciated.
    Ivo.

Outer part is (was) covered with triplex. Remains of "parachute exit" text can still be seen:

Near the latch are the remains of text: "push hard(?) & turn to open"

    Hi Ivo,

could be an insidehatch to get out of the gunturret after rotating it.

    Greets from limburg!

    CSL.

    Hey CLS,

Haven't thougt of that yet! Would also explain why the outer part is covered with triplex. Thanks a lot!

    Groeten terug uit Midden-Limburg. ;)
    Ivo.

That looks too thick for a gun turret hatch. Wondering if it could be a hatch from the floor aft of the top turret?

Here a drawing from the release access door for the tail gunner:

i tend to agree with Lancasterman, it looks like the hatch to the rear of the bomb bay, on the port side.

Hi Ivo, what do you mean "the outer part is covered with triplex? what is triplex? it looks all metal to me.

    Regards
    Roy

Re: Escape Hatch Halifax MZ376, QB-K

    Ivo Wilms - 21.04.2009, 21:47

Roy, the outer part of the hatch, the part with the "Parachute Exit" text written on it, is triplex. Triplex are thin layers of pressed wood. Below the triplex is the normal aluminium.

I was thinking this was mroe like the doors in the picture until I saw this picture. The mystery deepens...

Ivo, thanks for the explaination. i understand now.:n108:
i think its what we call plywood over here

ah, i thought you were talking about the one arrowed in the diagram below.

I sent the picture to a very knowledgable Halifax person and he said it is not a hatch for the crew as it is too flat and should be curved for the rear fusealge side.
    Mystery deepens...?

    Ivo,

do you have found no part numbers on this hatch ?
On interest are the letter in the part numbers ;)

its funny you should say that because it looks me theres only one handle and it appears to be on the outside?.
    the mystery does indeed deepen..

It is a very strange looking door. I am wondering if it is not halifax?

Re: Escape Hatch Halifax MZ376, QB-K

    Ivo Wilms - 27.04.2009, 18:48

I see I forgot to post a picture of the other side. Stupid me.
There's another handle on the plywood plated side. But this handle is sunken away inside the door instead of poking out like the one you can see in the pictures.

Tomorrow I will post the remaining photos. The hatch is now all cleaned.

So far I didn't find any numbers on it.

The remaining/cleanup photos. Too bad a few holes fell in it:

Locks which fell out of the hatch:

Thanks for the new photos !

I think it is more a service hatch as a emergency hatch.
The two parts on the last two photos looks like from aerial, maybe from tail section...
I´m wondering that no numbers could found. You should found the part numbers on the inner side of the aluminium sheet !

the problem with that Nils, is the hatch has the words, "parachute exit" written on it. i hadnt noticed this before

    Lancasterman - 29.04.2009, 18:31

Thanks for posting the new pictures. I am trying to find out from a few halifax friends what it might be. The only hatches I know of are the main crew door on the port rear fuselage and the nose and top hatch, neither which look like this.

Re: Escape Hatch Halifax MZ376, QB-K

    MUCKS - 29.04.2009, 22:47

    Hi All.
Looking at the thickness of the door I would guess that whatever aircraft it came off ,it would be underneath the fuselage as it looks it was designed for stress loadings.Hope this might help to ID.

    Martin

Really appreciate all the effort. ;)

I've been searching and searching for hours, but without succes until I found this video on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tY8OMDWqreo
At 2:26 I see something that looks quite simular like this photo I made from the same angle:

Re: Escape Hatch Halifax MZ376, QB-K

    Lancasterman - 30.04.2009, 01:45

That does look similiar but the nose hatch is square and your hatch in the pictures looks more triangular with a thin edge on the one side?

Re: Escape Hatch Halifax MZ376, QB-K

    Ivo Wilms - 30.04.2009, 12:22

No no no. This hatch is (was) square! It's crushed on one side because of the impact. Both ends have (had) a thinner edge. 100% Sure about this.

Take a look at these photos:

Re: Escape Hatch Halifax MZ376, QB-K

    Roy N - 30.04.2009, 20:14

I didnt realise it should be square either, but i can see what you mean now Ivo.
the handle at the base of the hatch in the film also looks the same as yours

Perhaps you have solved your own mystery?

Re: Escape Hatch Halifax MZ376, QB-K

    Ivo Wilms - 30.04.2009, 22:11

Not 100% sure it is this hatch. Mainly because there's no plywood on the hatch in the video... But that can have its reasons. Like they didn't restore it with plywood because of all those people who would walk over it or something like that.

A fellow who is quite knowledgable on Halifax aircraft said that this hatch looks like the "joe hole" for SOE Halifax aircraft.

Just emaield a friend and sent him the pictures of this hatch he said if it was definately square then it will be the nose escape hatch

Re: Escape Hatch Halifax MZ376, QB-K

    Ivo Wilms - 05.05.2009, 21:19

This hatch was 100% sure square. Mystery solved! ;)
Thanks all for helping. Very much appreciated. :n108:

Yes thats what i think it is.

ive spent some time searching for a photo of the forward hatch and finally found something that could be useful.
i have marked the hatch in red. although its a diagram it looks the same shape to me and the handle is in the same place.

I should mention that i found this diagram on the Flyingzone Publications website and they own the copyright. I would like to thank Bryan Atkinson for their permission to reproduce it here.

i suggest that members have a look at the Flyingzone Publications website.
    http://www.flyingzonedirect.com/

they have CD ROMs available for the Halifax B MKIII, Spitfire V and Lancaster.
they contain plenty of photos, diagrams, and other information which i think some members could find useful.
Click on one of the aircraft names on the left and have a look at the screenshots
they are also working on more CDs covering the Hurricane and Mosquito,
which are due to be released this year

    Regards
    Roy

Yes that is definately the same hatch then! Well done!
