Unknown P-38 found in Brunico, Italy.
Despite it’s a long time that, quite often, I consult API Board, only today I decided to join because I hope to get some expert advice, perhaps decisive, about a very special case of which some researchers in Austria, England and Austria are dealing with.
The aircraft was discovered, a few years ago, by Roland Domanig an Austrian researcher who, in the past has solved many cases of aircraft crashed in Austria and Italy.
In this case we have a P-38 crashed in Italy and precisely in Bruneck near Bolzano, in the summer of 1944 and whose identity, just like that of its pilot, is still unknown.
All researches carried out so far have had as a result only to narrow the field of probability to only two planes whose pilots are both still MIA.
This case had been submitted to the DPMO with whose personnel I have previously collaborated on the discovery of a wreckage of B-24, with 7 crew members, presumably still inside, sank in the mud of a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea.
Of course, before starting a recovery operation, the DPMO needs to have data certain enough and, above all, to be sure of the possible presence, in the crash area, of human remains.
Unfortunately we have had only little information by the very few eyewitnesses still alive and moreover there are some discrepancies regarding the exact date of the crash.
All we know for sure is only that the event happened in the summer of 1944.

With regard to this case, had already been opened, by Alex Smart, a thread in the API Board in July 2007 (http://www.iphpbb.com/board/ftopic-81805422nx79380-391.html)
but, at that time, the photos of the parts of the plane that had been requested, were not available.
From that date, other metal sheets have been found and some of these have the production numbers.
I enclose a photo of these numbers in the hope of having an opinion on which of the two aircraft could be fitted those parts.
These are data of the two planes:

    1) P-38 J15LO s / n 44-233147 1st FG 97th FS missing July 13, 1944. Pilot Howard G. Micheli, MIA. MACR 7192. Last seen over the Adriatic while en route to island of Vis.

    2) P-38 J15LO s / n 42-104049 82nd FG FS 6th missing July 20, 1944. Pilot Homer Allen Spence, MIA. MACR 7070. Last seen east of Innsbruck en route to the south.

Given the proximity of the possible crash point, I believe that the aircraft that we are trying to identify could be the Spence’s one.
Unfortunately, the numbers on the sheet would seem to indicate production dates subsequent to 1942, year in which was allegedly built the plane.
This could be explained by the fact that, on April 2, 1944, this plane had been repaired after a landing accident while at the controls of 2nd Lt. Walter J. Carroll Jr.
Obviously this complicates things because many of the parts may have been replaced with others of more recent production.
I apologize if my English may not be quite correct but I hope it is nevertheless quite understandable.
Thank you in advance for any help from this forum in order to help us in a more precise identification of the aircraft and, consequently, in a next possible intervention for the recovery and repatriation of the pilot’s remains.

    Freddy

PS: As I couldn't understand how to upload the image I insert the link to Imageshack... hope it works!
