PHIL RUDD (MOUNTAIN RECORDING STUDIOS) TAURANGA, NZ.
Kleiner Ausflug ins Tonstudio von Phil Rudd

    INTERVIEW

It’s A Long Way From The Top Of Rock N Roll.

Recording studio near Tauranga, New Zealand
Owned and operated by Phil Rudd the drummer from the band AC/DC since 1986

At the end of a stony road that runs right by the foot of the Kaimai range of mountains, behind kiwi plantations and herds of sheep, there lies a barn. It’s not really a barn at all, though, but a fully-equipped recording studio. And here, 20 minutes by car from Tauranga, is where former AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd can be found.

After nine years of touring the world with the supergroup, Rudd took the decision to try a few other things in life. Born and raised in Tasmania, he felt drawn towards New Zealand because of the similarity in the two terrains and came to settle here. He’d always been a fan of animals, so at first he tried to breed deer in Paradise valley, but now all he owns is a few sheep and some kiwis to keep his friends and guests fed and watered. At one time he also owned a few goats, but they always kept escaping from their compound and Phil ended up selling them to a neighbour.

Phil then started the project of building Mountain Studios and while he won’t say much about the cost of the exercise, he does admit that it was more than he expected.
“We built the whole thing from scratch,” he says. “We’ve got great sound-proofing in there because everything’s built with double walls.” He’s right, too. Even if a guitarist is roaring away in the studio, you won’t hear a thing in the control room.

With over a thousand hours of studio time clocked up over ten AC/DC albums, Phil has developed an intuitive feeling for the special needs of recording musicians. Although he didn’t need to do it, the studio floor lies on 10mm thick lambs’ fleece for damping the sound and every room is incredibly spacious. The main studio measures seven by twelve metres.

The mixing desk is a 24 channel Hill Audio series 8400 with the usual array of effects and the pride of the studio are the gigantic JBL 44/35 monitors which Phil calls “absolutely awesome”. Smaller JBLs stand at either end of the mixing desk. “We’ve tried to think of everything a musician needs to record comfortably,” he says, because he knows what’s required to fulfil bands’ expectations.

Designed by Keith Ballagh, the studio was built in under six weeks under the supervision of Marshall Day & Associates of Auckland. The electrics were put in by the specialist Hans Peter Frick with some help from Phil, who used to work as an electrician himself.

Although Phil has the knowledge to work as a sound engineer, in the few months that the studio has been open he’s been more than happy when bands have brought their own sound people with them. “Bands of all shapes and sizes have their favourite engineers and I’m more than happy for them to bring them when they record here. Phil sees himself more in the role of a producer and he’s been very pleased with the results he’s had with a young Tauranga group, Hard To Handle. There’s a single in the offing and they’ve already recorded a demo, “Heart Of Stone”. Phil’s also pleased with the recordings he’s done with Ritchie Pickett.

Phil first started playing drums back in Melbourne aged 16, funding his obsession with his electrician’s work. He first played with Buster Brown, Rose Tattoo singer Angry Anderson’s band, and then joined up with AC/DC when they began to get established.

In the end Phil just got tired of the travelling ”it really knackers you” and doesn’t really like to talk about his days in the band, who will be visiting New Zealand for the first time in November. He’s pretty modest about his musical achievements.

He ended up in New Zealand by chance. After spending a few weeks with an uncle in Hawkes Bay following the death of his mother he was due to move on to America. “But I liked New Zealand straight away, so I just kinda stayed,” he explains. That was eight years ago. He met some helicopter pilots in Tauranga and decided to learn to fly himself. After earning his pilot’s licence at the Rotorua Aero Club he learnt to fly a chopper with star pilot Bruce Harvey from Taupo. Phil even used to own a few himself. The last one he had he describes as “wonderful, the best in New Zealand.” But he had to sell it because it needed a full-time crew to maintain it. ”It was just too expensive so I sold it. It crashed not long after and all four crew members were killed.”

Phil’s other hobby is racing cars. He brought a Ford GT40 to New Zealand, but a collector bought it from him and shipped it to England. ”I’ve always been crazy about cars. I had a load of them. Far to many to ever actually drive.”

When he’s not working or spending time with the family - partner Lisa and their two sons aged three and 22 months - then Phil likes to race his V8 in Bay Park, Manfield, Pukekohe or Taupo. He’s still got ambitions to be a farmer. He’s developed 10 acres and has a few sheep and some fruit trees. Well it makes a change from deer and goats. “And at least trees stand still, so you don’t have to spend half your life running after them.” And, surprisingly for a rock ‘n’ roller, he likes getting up early.

“I wouldn’t give up this lifestyle for anything in the world,” says Phil, who does, however, admit to having another iron in the fire. He wants to record a solo album.
