The legend of the Wand of Shadows.
    Ooc:

    Greetings once again, my friends.
Do you remember some time ago when I asked about a roleplaying story?
Well, I quitted playing at that time so I never got to write one down. Anyhow, I have one finnished now and I have decided to write it here. I hope you will enjoy it.

This is a Join-in story if you are familiar with the saying. It means you are welcome to join in and continue the story in any way you wish. (if you have more questions simply read my old thread).

The story will be posted on my next reply.

    The Wand of Shadows

When I first heard the tale, I was not sure if I truly believed it.
Of course, a sailor from Northport might not be famous as the most trusting of people. I remember it pretty well, 103 years ago; I was 15 years old at the time and still unaware of the mysterious of our world. It was a late, warm summer evening during the Ehtele'mele (famous elven holiday, a week of romance and song) when I spotted a large ship riding in from the sea. I followed the ship with my dark, red eyes as it slowly made its way through the Ab'Dendriel harbour. Strangers were not welcome in Ab'Dendriel back then, unless they were trading important valuables such as food, herbs and other aiding ingredients. This merchant ship usually dropped by once a month or so, and as usual, In common courtesy of course, the sailors ran into the nearest possible tavern to drink themselves under the table.
It was in the Tavern of Sotheril I first came to meet the scarred sailor named Jim Breaker. He looked older than he was, and you could tell by the expression on his face and his dark mysterious eyes that he had seen the world. As most sailors he did not deny the kids their stories, and as soon as he had finished his fifth beer or so and stuffed his pipe with Briandul-weed he started on his tale. He called it "The legend of the Wand of Shadows".

The legend tells of an old elven alchemist named Aikanaro, who lived for hundreds of years ago in one of the deep forests west from Ab'Dendriel, back then known as I' Dolen Eina, or as outsiders called it, Forest of Hidden Happiness. Aikanaro was a silent man and he almost never left his old house. No one that lived near knew him; in fact, not many had a chance to talk to him at all. Aikanaro were famous not only for his alchemy abilities, but also for his powerful wands. Even though he never told anyone about it, everyone knew he was secretly creating. From time to time strange travellers in robes came to visit him, and often left with a brand new wand in their hands. This was the life in the forest for many years.
However, suddenly after some time the travellers stopped visiting the old man, and those who went there were to leave immediately. Rumours spread that Aikanaro had accidentally created or found something he did not want anyone to see. In the years to come, he kept silent in his house. Some people started to believe he was dead, even though you could see smoke rising from his chimney in the colder days of winter.
Then, suddenly, after six or seven years had past, people started to see Aikanaro again. He often left his house in the middle of the night, searching for something, often in the deeper part of the forest. When people tried talking to him, he shook his head, cried and whispered that “It” was gone, that life as we knew it would cease to exist. Apparently, whatever it was Aikanaro had created; it made him lose his mind.
Not long after, Aikanaro took his own life, and the people that lived close by decided never to speak of him again. It was a sad story, which they all thought better untold.
It was not until many years later when two kids were playing in the deeper part of the woods that his name was to be mention once again. It was sunset and the boys were still deep inside the forest, realizing that they would not have the time to make it home this night. Therefore, they started looking for some place to sleep. Elves usually have no problem sleeping in the open air, but in wintertime’s you usually prefer a cave of some sort. Luckily after some time they found what seemed to be an old bear cave, and they entered knowing that this cave had not been in use for many years. However, once they reached deeper inside the cave, the two kids got a huge surprise; they had found an old room.
A skeleton of a man were still sitting in a large chair next to an old table. The kids walked slowly up to the table, and when they looked closer, they noticed an old dusty book on the table next to the man. The text was still readable. Carefully, they opened the first page and read "Journal of Amarth Drake". The boys got curious, and to find out when the man had lived, they looked at the last written page and read it.

    "Isylia 14 - Ringare - 367
I finally did it. That crazy old fool did not deserve to have it. The Wand is mine at last. Aikanaro may have made it, but he could never have done it without my artefacts. I am the one who shall be using the wand. Finally the world will see me as who I am, the greatest wizard of all! Finally the Wand of Shadows has found its true master."

That was the end of his tale. I have not thought about it for a long time, and probably would have forgotten about it if it were not that I heard something interesting awhile back, right outside the Magic Academy on the island of Edron. I was sitting on the grass reading a book about our old legends when two old noblemen walked down the stairs talking quietly to each other’s.

“Hesam, listen to me, that diary is the only proof that the Wand of Shadows has ever existed.”

“It is just an old book written by a man who lost his mind. Amusing reading to be sure, but nothing more, I assure you. I will not listen to this nonsense much further.”

“Please, Hesam. Do not give away the book to the elves.”

“The book is more useful in their great library than in my tower. I will not change my mind on this subject, Keth. Don’t waste your time.”

    “But…”

That is all I heard as they walked by, and also the same reason I ask for your help. You have received this letter from a good friend of mine, the high priest of Gendelian, which means he believe you are one of several fitful persons for the job. I will be waiting for you two weeks from now at Frodo’s tavern in Thais. Bring everything you need. I will explain the rest to you when we are all gathered. Speak of this letter to no one.

    Signed.

"you gotta be fucking kidding me! Tales like this my mother told me when I was a toddler sucking on a pacifyer!" I set myself comfortably in my chair with a smirk, eyeing drunken men sitting around an old man who had about a dozen empty mugs in front of him, and one full in his hand. The old man was the center of attention, the type who had uncountable inplausible tales up his sleeve and did not seem to mind the sceptic comments of the people around him. A great situation to sit back with some ale and watch the show.
"Ghe ghe ghe, you play a fool now, with your comments, but just you wait! How will you react when you are caught up in the shadows? No ghe ghe ghe you may believe only what your eyes can see and your ears can hear, but trust an old storyteller.., there is more around then your eyes can meet ghe ghe ghe." The old man who had introduced himself as Zwiebertje Ajuinezalf (yes a real tonguebreaker) sat back and took a long gurgling, bad smelling sip of his ale and continued his tale. "Yes you youngsters, you may think that you are something in this world, but let me tell you about Armarth Drake, unless you still want to sleep tonight ghe ghe ghe... " At the hearing of this name suddenly my attention shifted from just enjoying the rowdy public around the charismatic senior, to the coming story, because I heard the name of Drake before. From second or even third hand I had heard rumours of the legendary wizard, who's deeds were coverd in as much fog as the greenclaw swamp at sunrise.
"About a century ago, a tool was created, how, where and when is not known.. at least not by me.. this tool was so powerful and yet its power was so incomprehensable that it was called the wand of shadows. Ask yourself dear listeners, what is harder to understand then something that moves in shadows and darkness? Master Aikanaro created this tool, with help of the in that time still in his teenages Armarth Drake. By seeming coincidance a wand he conjured which power was evident, but its source not clear. However at first sight one could see that there was the possible strength to command souls in this wand."
The crowd was silent now, I secretly admired how the near-magical eloquence of the old man had charmed even me into listening helplessly. "In Armarth's young dreams of power and control, he fantasized about himself leading hordes of soldiers following him silently into worldly conquest. Himself at the head on a great white horse with the newly conjured wand in the right hand held upward. As the days went by, the dreams grew stronger and started to haunt him. The feeling grew in him that not Aikanaro was the creater and thus rightful owner of this wand but he himself was the legitimate holder of the artifact. One night, he secretly crawled to Aikanaro's dormitory and put Hondenbrokkenjuice in Aikanaro's bedtime-glass-of-water. Hondenbrokkenjuice's will make a victim helplessly rave and scream for 2 days in a row. Thus happend, after 36 hours of lunacy, Armarth Drake killed Aikanaro and took the wand from him and hid it in his robes. Now somewhere, Drake, currently an aged and experienced magician, is building a legion of world conquest and be ready when that time comes, because swords will no longer help you!"
With bulging eyes the crowd was sitting around the old man. Within some seconds the magic of the story faded. I silently stood up and walked to my bed, where I thought smiling about the told legend. Then I peacefully fell asleep, however my right hand was clutching my crossbow tighter then usual...

OOC: Good start, not bad at all. It will be interresting to see how we will meet in the future. <smiles>

    BIC:
Two weeks had past since I gave the letters to Gendelian. I was now standing outside Frodo's tavern in Thais with a backpack in my left hand and my Trustful sword Avalanche on my back. As usual I wore a black cape over my armor and my face hidden in its large hood. People does not often ask questions when they meet a blackhooded mysterious man with a large sword on his back.
It was a cloudy day. You could smell the fish and smoke all the way from the docks and the merchants was already on their feet. I entered the tavern and walked up to a round table in a corner of the room. I put down my sword and backpack on the table and sat down quietly, still with my hood pulled up.
A girl walked up to me with a smile and asked if I would like something to drink. I tossed her a few goldcoins and Frodo came out with a large ale.
I grabbed a large map from my backpack, rolled it out on the table and sipped peacefully on my ale while searching for the quickest way through the mountains.
At the same time, I wondered if anyone would show up.

The gods have a sense of humour. Two days after the tavern night, High priest Gendalian came to me with a package. Inside was a letter. The coincidance of the content of this letter almost made me doubt the autonomy of my actions.. It seemed as if Fate was stirring me around. Anyways, that is another discussion.
Of course I swung my backpack on my shoulder, bought some fresh bolts and set off to Thais. The guards of the North gate greeted me friendly, and I strolled on to Frodo's, an excited smile on my face. The children looked at my shyly and when I returned the looks they quickly ran into backstreets or hid behind mother's dress.
Several people were sitting in Frodo's enjoying their drinks, but one person stood out to me immediatly. In the corner of the tavern a large, muscular man was examining a big map from under a hood. I stepped toward him and put Gendalian's letter in front of his nose on the map.

As I was sitting in deep thoughts trying to figure out a way that was more comfortable than the mountain road, a shadow suddenly swept over the table. I looked up to see a man standing there, with a letter in his hand. I nodded at him as he put down the letter on the table. Good, I thought, at least one person so far. I took a deep sip from my ale mug and made a gesture at an empty chair with my other hand.

    - Please, sit down. Can I offer you some ale or bread? I usualy prefer wine, but these homemade bottle's here make me sick, and my last one I had in my backpack was finnished on my way over here.

I looked down on the map again, and after awhile I looked back up at the man.

    - So, while we wait for the others to show up, who are you and where did you travel from?

Another sip went down while I waited for any kind of answer.

"Some bread and a mug of ale would refresh me, thank you. My name is Tycho, archer by profession." I made a short bow toward the man, trying to figure our a face behind the hood of his cloak.

"I traveled from Venore, I live in the swampcity. And with whom do I have the honor Sir?"

Re: The legend of the Wand of Shadows.

I smiled and pulled back my hood. I had long dark hair, light skin and dark red eyes. And pointy ears.

    - My name is Calon Silverblade, half-elf from Ab'Dendriel. Calon is the name my mother gave me, and Silverblade is my father's clan name. But in these parts of the world I am more commonly known as Elof.

I took another sip from the mug and waved at the girl to come closer. As many others she looked nervous when my eyes met her.

    - Bread and ale for my friend here.

I gave her a few more goldcoins and she soon came back with some fresh bread and a mug of ale. I looked at Tycho again.

    - My eyes is one of the reasons why I keep my face hidden. It usualy scare people away. Its a long story, you see, my mother worked with young dragons with some other elves back in the day, helping injured young dragons and such things. And one time while she was pregnant, awaiting me, she accidently mixed her blood with a dragon. I am not sure if she had a wound of some sort on her leg and perhaps sat on her knees on a bloody cavefloor while aiding the poor beast, but anyhow, when I was born they noticed that my eyes weren't exactly normal. I have partly dragon eyes. It has helped me to see alot better, specialy in dark places, but, well.. people feel abit uncomfortable with it.

I took another sip and finnished the mug.

    - Nowadays I am simply enjoying the good life. My leadership in the Silverblade clan ended when the Order of Chivalry disbanded. Now I am just an old orderknight walking around drinking wine on regular basics.

I luaghed at myself for some seconds before I calmed down again and looked back at Tycho.

    - So you are interrested in powerful artefacts? I mean if that is the reason you are here. Some people seek treasures, some seek adventures and some seek answers. What do you seek?

Re: The legend of the Wand of Shadows.

    Tychoneus - 22.05.2005, 17:46

    '
    I grinned at Calon.
"Treasure? fun. Answers? fun. But when I saw a man slipping over a banana peeling 3 days ago, that was a lot more fun. No I am in it for the thrill of adventure and to do what I am good at."

I took a good look in the eyes of the elf.
"You say you see well in the dark, but think you are seen well in the dark as well, your eyes would give me a clear target even in the tombs of the Necromant King himself. Not that I would dare to harm you."

I laughed loudly. My bread and ale arrived.

Re: The legend of the Wand of Shadows.

    Elof the Avalancher - 22.05.2005, 19:06

    I luaghed truthfully.

    - Yes, that might be true of course.

As I looked down I started thinking for myself. I sat in silence for a moment before I looked up, almost like an old man who forgot who he was speaking to.

    - So, to do what you are good at, you say. What exactly are you good at, if I may ask?

I smiled and waved at the girl once more.

    - Just some water this time. The ale here is not worthy if its name.

Re: The legend of the Wand of Shadows.

    Tychoneus - 22.05.2005, 19:42

    '
"What am I good at? Mostly I am good at staying cheerful under all circumstances."

I smiled at the serious elf.
"I was raised by an old wizard, the old man saw humour in almost every stiuation, and could make the best ironic remarks. If the closest thing you have to a father is like that, some will rub off. By the way, some say I am good in a fight as well, but I don't want to boast. I love life, and want to enjoy it to the fullest extend, and for me that means putting myself in to a dangerous, surprising and formost changing environment. Those three elements equal an adventure."

I strook my ivory white hair back, and straightened my green and yellow hunters outfit, with a white unicorn embroided in it.

Re: The legend of the Wand of Shadows.

    Elof the Avalancher - 22.05.2005, 20:03

    - Ah, I see. Then I supose its good for me to have a sense of humour then, eh?

I grinned for myself, and then noticed the unicorn on his outfit. I pointed at it with my glass of water.

    - Any special reason why there is a unicorn there?

Re: The legend of the Wand of Shadows.

    Tychoneus - 22.05.2005, 20:46

    '
"Its the sign of the Tribe where I am from, located in Femur hills. Yellow green and a white unicorn were the colors of its shield. Aside from that there is no special reason for the unicorn. Any plans for the coming days?"

Re: The legend of the Wand of Shadows.

    Elof the Avalancher - 22.05.2005, 21:24

    - Ah.. interresting. Well, I was thinking about waiting until everyone was here, but allright. I dont got any perfect plan on how to solve this mysterious quest, if it indeed now can be solved, but our next stop will be Ab'Dendriel. We need to find that diary in their library over there. Thats also the reason I was looking for a special fellowship like this. I need idea's, suggestions and whatever comes in mind for this quest. I am no leader in this group, I am just an adventurer like the rest. And who knows what kind of danger might stand in the way. It might sound silly, but this can be one of the great secrets known to man. I bet there is someone out there who would like to stop us.

"That is right! Lets go as soon as possible, I feel the itches coming up in my stomach allready!!"

As I said this quite loud, many people looked up from their seats what this seeming idiot was up to. I laughed a bit sheepishly scratched my head and sat down again with red cheeks.

Re: The legend of the Wand of Shadows.

    Elof the Avalancher - 22.05.2005, 23:11

I grinned while giving a fellow to the table next to us an evil glare. After some seconds I raised my eyebrows in a cocky way, and he quickly looked down at the table again. I smiled and looked at Tycho as he scratched his head.

    - Thats the spirit right there. But lets just wait abit longer, the book can wait one more day. I'll sit here for abit longer and if no one show up I will rent a room upstairs. And if no one has arrived when I wake up we'll get moving. How does that sound?

I refilled my waterglas and took a sip.

    - hmpf. Not even the water taste the way it should.

"Sounds like a plan there, the more the merrier."

    I yawned.

"Sure you dont want to sleep in the fresh air? I will set up camp in in the south."

Re: The legend of the Wand of Shadows.

    Elof the Avalancher - 23.05.2005, 07:37

    - Thank you, but I've been sleeping on a ship for a over a week. I will take this opportunity to sleep in a bed, you never know when I will get the chance again.

I stood up, grabbed my sword and backpack.

    - I'll see you in the morning, Tycho. Have a peacefull rest.

I walked up to the counter and threw a few goldcoins at Frodo. I pointed at the stairs and he answered with a nod. The girl gave me a key and I walked up the stairs into my room.

Re: The legend of the Wand of Shadows.

    Elof the Avalancher - 23.05.2005, 23:32

I woke up late in the afternoon and enjoyed a few minutes of bedtime, simply laying there thinking about the day to come. At the same time I wondered if anyone had shown up while I was asleep.

I yawned and streched myself, the sun slowly rised in the east and I walked to a small river to wash myself. Then I hurried to Frodo's to see what the new day would bring.
