FlyingV - 21.06.2005, 14:16guitar fx, amps and all the other guitar stuff
Hi there!
First I wanted to put this topic into the "ask the band" section. Then I thought it would be cool to have a general discussion about any guitar related stuff, maybe the IS guitarists will find their way to this topic, too sometimes.
I hope that everyone that plays guitar or that's interested in playing will take part on this discussion. Share your knowledge, tell about your equipment and so on...
But before I forget why I wanted to post (would be cool if anyone could help me):
I'm looking for a wah-wah. What I have in mind are: The Ibanez Weeping Demon, Morley Bad Horsie II, Boss PW-10. Is there someone in this forum that uses one of them or that tested it and can write any comment about them? Or is there a wah-wah I forgot that has to mentioned? (except the Cry-baby, tested it yesterday).
Thanx.

Hey!
I'm not a technical guitar player, but I can share what I do, of course. I don't know a thing about wah-wah pedals, although BOSS generally tends to bring out good effects (I've used their distortion and overdrive boxes, nice, but delay would be good with them).
I use a LG-33 model guitar (it's a cheap make, and many Asian companies make them. Mine's "Prince"; it gives me the sound I want). Many things are inspired in it by the Strat. Strangely, I don't have an effects processor, analog or digital, that's external. I connect my guitar clean into my Mac mini computer and use "GarageBand 2", a great software (great amp simulation) to do my recording and playing (of course, I'll need to install extra RAM for a performance boost).
How's the sound that creates? Here's a sample at: http://www.icompositions.com/auditorium/showphoto.php?photo=16362
It's around 25 seconds and if you have QuickTime installed, you don't have to download it. Just hit play. The drums are prerecorded, courtesy of 'Drums on Demand'. The guitars and bass is my work.
I don't have an amp. My Mac mini channels audio out through USB to a basic audio interface (Griffin iMic), which channels it out to my old stereo (from the 80s, my mom's). Not the best for bass, but guitars come out great, especially with amp simulation - thanks to my Mac mini and GarageBand. Input is through iMic as well (mostly mic level, but it supports line as well).
Oh, and I play in my own little melodic powermetal project, the only here in Nepal - Atlantis. There's a song, but I'd rather not post it here, the recording quality is, well... let's say 'not good'. ;)
I compose as well, but most are simplistic, following a 4/4 time signature. I've composed about 4 good ones, I guess. My guitar playing is influenced a lot by Kai, Henjo and Piet's playing, but slowly I'm developing my own style. Hopefully, it'll be derivative of their style but something completely new and weird :D One can dream, no? :P
I'm finally recovering from illness so I think I'm talking too much, I'll leave it here. Great thread! :)

Hi again!
Didn't tell anything about me the last time. I'll do it now. I'm 21 years old and play the guitar for 7 1/2 years now. I'm still looking for a band. If you are living in Saarland or southern Pfalz, Germany and play any metal related instrument, it would be cool to get to know you :D .
Sorry atlantis, Nepal is too far away to jam together, maybe with 4 Million Watts and a 1000x12" Speaker :D .
What I could tell about today is a book I use in the moment. It's called "speed mechanics for lead guitar" from Troy Stetina. It's pretty cool and it's worth the money I spend for it. It's not that expensive, I paid 15€ (about 18$ I think).
About the book: (Not for beginners) It's devided into three parts: "mechanics", "rythm" and "creativity". Creativity is the smallest part of them. Some words and interval singing and the "Prelude in D" from Bach slowly and acoustic to bring every note to life. The Rythm part has not that much to do with speed although some riffs are very fast. It's got some cool riffs and you can develop your feeling for rythm with them. What I like most is the biggest part "mechanics". It's got lots of small riffs to increase your speed, train you fingers and the right (or left) hand over to the "Flight of the Bumblebee"(what else :) ), that's a very good "exercise" in combination with the subject "the art of practicing".
78 pages and a CD.
Looks like commercial, eh :D . no, that's not what I have in mind and no, I don't know Troy Stetina. It's just my personal meening, someone else might think different.
Bye, until the next time, then maybe about my amp.

Ah, that seems like a good book. I should really work on my guitar... I mean - I know basic notation (I'm one of those spoiled brats learning off tabs lol) and love some classical progressions - although I'm not a big fan of classical music. :) It's weird that my playing is quite influenced by powermetal directly :o
Oh, I'd love to jam. Maybe when I come around that area someday ;)
Hey, no problem in recommending a book, don't worry about sounding commercial lol ;) I think it helps.
Anyway, which guitar/amp do you use?

Hi!
First the amp: I'm using a "Rath-Amp". I think it's not very famous outside Germany and Switzerland, even inside it's quite unknown I guess. As far as I know Rammstein used to play a Rath-Amp and Sascha Gerstner from Freedom Call. The factory does not longer exist, Rath is now working at "Vintage-Amp".
The model is called Rangemaster. It's a transostor amp with 160Watts, a clean&crunch channel and an overdrive channel. It's very loud :) . The sound is cool, you can have a very nice clean sound, with the boost button you get a crunchy sound. The overdrive channel is what I like most. It's got a very cool metal distortion. No digital stuff in there, the reverb is also not digital but a feather-reverb. Cool handmade thing.
Now the speaker: I'm using a Behringer BG412H with 4x12" Behringer Shark speakers. It doesn't cost a lot of money and that's the way it sounds. If you just want to make noise, you need a speaker for a rehearsal room and play powerchords all day it's okay I think, but for "singing" solos and a warm sound it's absolutely the wrong speaker. I'm really looking for another one.
I'll be back again soon :D

Hi people,
I'm using a lot of stompboxes (Boss MT-2, BD-2, BF-2 and Ibanez TS-10) at home for rehearsing (with an old Roland Cube-20) and recording (with a Hughes and Kettner Red Box Mk III). In the rehearsing room and live I'm using a Zoom GFX-5 and a borrowed H&K Attax 50.
I have three different electric guitars:
- a Mexico Strat from 1990 with a Seymour Duncan JB jr. at the bridge position
- a Ibanez RG-550 from 1987
- a Vester Ambition-I from an unknown year
I also have a cheap bass guitar (Stagg, but it has a killer sound) and two accoustic guitars (one steel string with piezo PU and on nylon string guitar, which was my first guitar)
I'm using Steinberg Cubase VST 5.1 for recordings (yes I payed for it) on my old PIII-750.
Greetings
Yalin

Hi!
I don't know how famous this little program is, maybe you're thinking now "man, you're from yesterday, better post some news...". But what I do know is how useful it can be: The Power Tab Editor. It's freeware, downloadable at http://www.power-tab.net. Perfect to write down your tabs.
Bye :D

Too bad that that's not available for the Mac...
But on the bright side, http://www.guitar-pro.com/ will soon port to the Mac!![/url]
