    Questions (plural) for Piet.
Greetings maestro, my name is Jon and I'm one of the few but growing number of Savior faithful in the US. I am also currently building a band (I'm doing the lead guitar and vocals) that is within the metal genre. I saw your section about aspiring bands and may take you up on that after we have all needed musicians and have a recorded demo. (And after I can speak German a little better, I have an awful South Philadelphia accent lol)I have many questions, but I'll try to limit it to 4 since I don't want to take up too much of your time.

    1. Were you responsible for discovering the French metal band Heavenly? I noticed that you did vocals on "Time Machine" on their first album along with Kai. I've actually been trying to model my voice a bit after monsieur Ben Sotto.

    2. In addition to being a front person in my band, I also write most of the material. I have been often told that some of my songs are too long. Is there such a thing as overdoing it with a song's length? (My longest song bears the same name as my ID here at the forum, it's projected running time is roughly 16 minutes)

    3. I am currently seeking to have a band consisting of 5 people: 2 guitars, bass, keyboards, drums (I currently am only short another guitar player). But lately I've been in contact with a gifted soprano who has similar musical interests to me and am wrestling with the idea of asking her to join and trade lead vocals with me. We have similar voice ranges, so do you think that such a combination would sound good?

    4. I am what you would call an ecclectic metalhead, I am seeking to combine the different sounds of bands as diverse as Blind Guardian, Rhapsody, Symphony X, Aryeon, Nightwish, Sirenia, Heavenly, Lost Horizon, and Nocturnal Rites (I actually just bought a 7 string guitar). As a producer do you think that these styles could all fit together or do you think they would clash?

    Heavenly: yes
overdoing: yes... example: I realy think, that the latest BG album truly is overdone by far. where is the song in this mass of tracks and different parts...?
female voice: in general nothing wrong with it, but having two main lead/front persons does not sound like a good idea to me...
blending styles: basicly there are no rules, do whatever you think is cool, but keep in mind, that most of the people need something to stick to... if you are too various there will be no way to identify with what you are doing... better decide for something you realy believe in.

    all the best,

    piet

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly, I also sent some of these questions to Tobias Sammet over at the Edguy site, but since so many people have questions for him it may take a while for him to get back to me. I've been a big fan of your work both in Savior and with producing other groups and I place a high value on your opinion in the matter. And I agree with you on the latest Blind Guardian album.
