Now, since i live in the USA, Metal music like iron savior is a rarity. Most of what the radio plays is stuff like B'linkin park and such. I listen to a lot different kinds of music, but my true love lies in stuff like iron savior. whenever i sit down in my car and put in an iron savior cd, my friends just give me this look and go "dude, this sounds like 80's hair metal." First off, no, its not. Second, shut up. I just dont understand why i get made fun of for listening to something i enjoy ya know? I mean, just cuzz its not mainstream, doesnt mean its bad. I mean, i've successfully won over some friends with iron savior, but not many. But thats the way it is over here in the USA. Music like iron savior just doesnt exist on the radio, and most people just give me a strange look, or laugh. But i think iron savior put it best "I got a heavy metal powered mind, i dont need conformity." But i'm just curious, does anyone else out there get these kind of reactions from people when you listen to metal? Am i the only one since i live in the USA?

No darling, you're not alone out there! Here in Italy it seems everybody listens to very commercial stuff, pop for the younger ones and lots of latin music for the older ones. Hard rock/heavy metal is not at the top right now and when you listen to it people look at you as if you were kinda weird old rock n' roll freak, but metal still has a solid fan base here. You just have to look for the well hidden right places... pubs where you can find motorcycle guys, small discos that play rock/metal... not easy to find them, but there's still something around. The funny thing is that there you find a very mixed audience, people of any age: at the disco where I usually go there are many teens but also many peole over 30-40 and nobody cares, music is what matters, you know... :D
As for what people can tell about you and your *weird* (so they probably say) tastes in music... well, if there is something I have learnt in life is that you gotta do the things you like (unless you may hurt someone somehow) but ONLY for yourself. NEVER do anything to impress or please the others, do those things that make you feel good and make you feel complete, don't give a damn about what they say. Just think with YOUR head and ask yourself *Is this the right thing for me and my life?*; if the answer is yes and you don't damage anyone/anything else, than that's your way. Follow it and don't listen to what people say! That's what I call freedom
Btw, you have always this board to find someone to share your interest in music, isn't it? :D :D :D

I get the same stuff from my friends all the time.
IMHO, Iron Savior is not only louder, they have a better beat and superior vocals (by far). If they're willing to dismiss something out of hand as "80s headbanging metal" (which it's not); then I suppose we should be dismissing Incubus, Linkin Park, etc as "Teeny-bopper" stuff.
If I remember the last half of a quote from General Wavell (WWII British), "and remember: the herd is usually wrong."

I get it a lot as well. Don't get me wrong, heavy metal is popular enough here, but people tend to dislike a lot of bands I like, including Stratovarius, Gamma Ray (lol they are almost christian omfg) and, of course, Iron Savior.
People somehow think it's not right to listen to music which doesn't feel it has to deal with today's issues. A prime example is Rage Against The Machine, which just manages to make me stressed. I use music to cheer me up, I don't wanna hear about racism, wars, and all the bad things in the world, I just really want to escape and, for about 5 minutes, pretend I'm somewhere else, watching the Iron Savior destroy the Shadow or likewise.
Well, that's my bit. I hope someone can at least see my point of view.

Well, I have some friends that don't really like metal music, living in th US and all. So when I want to show them some Iron Savior, they don't really wanna listen. I'm like "COME ON!!! THESE GUYS ARE GOOD!!!" Heh. Course, some people are just close minded and only stick to one particular style of music. Like rap. Ugh, no offense to anyone who likes it, but I just don't care for it. But at least I've tried getting into it, so it's not like I don't know what I'm talking about. But I do have friends that have listened to Iron Savior and loved them. Heck, they told their friends about it. Aside from those people, I can understand the whold friends not liking Iron Savior thing. But those that don't like it cuz it's not your normal American music, maybe it just takes a little longer for them to realize how wrong they were to say that. Because Iron Savior is a very good band. They were the reason I started liking metal music. ^_^

I've had many friends in all world thanks to internet , and they all complanit about the same: metal music is not as popular as other music genres. If you review the average album sales of metal bands, you'll discover that none of them compares in popularity with commercial music.
Is not an IS issue, all metal bands face the same thing.
At first, I was amazed of how people could be so blind to quality. But then, in the other hand, I understood that some things are not ment for everyone: that is why they are special
I have witnessed how good things in the wrong hands are turned into crap.
Is like finding an incredibly beautiful place, away from civilization, which you love and respect, and then see how turists go and pollute everything, leaving cans, and plastic bottles, and destroying it forever.
I've taken now a new attitude: sorry to say this, but I don't share or show the music I enjoy to anyone that I don't consider worthy. Perhaps is crude, but it preserves the magic, and keeps tourists away.
Let's face it: this is not popular music, and is better to be few, for it mantains its purity. Bands that become popular taint their style to please the masses (Nightwish...) so it is good to be enough to keep it alive, but not so many as to turn it into crap.
My advice: you can feel when someone "has" this special feeling: share with them, not with the rest, because they won't understand, and be proud to be different. There are very few people in the world like you guys, if you consider statistics, so we are in fact special.

OC, that's SO true.
These days I'm becoming greedy and not giving my CDs so anyone else. I had a bad experience once. I wanted to share my love for Iron Savior with a few friends and gave him my Unification.
Then this guy comes to my website and says "Oh, another powermetal fan from Nepal?". Then he said "Oh I got Unification from Japan."
He plays along all the time (even on MSN) and later tells me he's the brother of my friend!! It was my CD! I'm sure he never even liked it, just wanted to look cool. Geez... :x
Anyway, so now, as OC said, I don't share with anyone unless they're really close or want to really develop and interest in metal :)
As OC said, again, it's special. It's something you can relate to, so not everyone will like it. That's one advantage of not having anyone at all around you who listens to IS :)
Hail, Savior! :D

Be proud to be different! That's my personal motto!! I'm not kidding... I've always been considered the *weird and different* one for many reasons and I've always answered that it's definitely too easy to be like all the others, to be *normal*. Always be proud to be/do something that makes you *different*, it means you have a special spark inside :D
P.S.: Hey Rod!! Welcome back on board, dear latino brother! Will IM you later.
