    Sugimoto Hiroshi (Photographer)
    Zitat:

Düsseldorf (dpa) - Familyphotos, Holidaypictures, Adverts: That is the banal Everydayphotography. The japanese Photo Artist Sugimoto Hiroshi (59) holds a total different Pictureworld against this global visual flood.

With the until now biggest Retrospective in Germany, the Artcollection Northrhine-Palastina in Düsseldorf presents the unique Artist, which always shoots his Pictureseries - Meditations in Black-White - with an orginal Plattenkamera. From July 14th until January 6th 2008, around a dozen of this Motiveseries are to see. They will be shown after the Premiere at the Rhine also in Salzburg, the National Gallery of Berlin and Luzern.

If Seamotives of his Pictureserie «Seascapes», which greyshades and far horizons seem to be a little to calculatet, or if clever lightened Photos of Wax figurines of historical Persons: The Question about the proportion of reality and copy, the sceptisism about the «Wahrheit» (truth) in pictures, really makes the since 1994 in New York living Artist think. Sugimoto lets experience himself in Düsseldorf more than a Philosoph with a Photocamera than as a «Bildermacher» (Picturemaker) in the common sense. Brittle Conceptart and scant minimalism ground many of his Pictureseries, like «Colours of Shadow» (2004-2006) as Experiment about the light in the edges and angles of white rooms.

Instead of Eyejoy, which holds back an almost neurotic-penible Accuratesse of Picturelanguage, the techniqual Creation and also the from the Artist himself wantet esthetic hanging, Sugimotos Big Formats let room for mindgames. In colonisation Cinemas of the USA, the Artist let Movies play in front of noone and was holding his Camera open to the dia: As shining white quadrat, which, in this suggestion, «aufgesogen» (sucked in) the whole movie, the dia only reflects its light only until the enourmous decoration of the old Moviepalaces: Who sees too much, sees nothing in the end, could be here the message of Sugimoto, who steps against the -told- likenesscharacter of photography.

The japanese One does «Medienhistorische» (Mediahistoric) roundabouts with his «Portraits» (1999). Sugimoto photographed Wax Figurines of the english King Heinrich VIII. and also his unlucky Wifes, which creative Members of Madame Tussauds createt after Pictures which where made in the 16th Century. Hans Holbein paintet them «nach dem Leben» (like in life). Back into the Twodimensionality, the high Ladies and Gentlemen ask as «Denk-Bilder» now clearly after the strange relation from artificially and naturality.
