I played a EE demo and thought it was interesting but I never got to trying it. These are some other RTS's I have played that I can think of:
Warcraft III
Cossacks II
Rise of Nations
Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots
These are some other games I have played but I don't know if they are technically RTS or not:
Galactic Civilizations II
Civilization II
Civilization IV
Caesar III
Caesar IV
Pharaoh
Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom
I did not fancy most of these games, except for Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom, Warcraft III, and Rise of Nations.
Emperor was more a city builder game, but it also had some RTS elements, and you could play it online but hardly anyone plays it now. I enjoyed the game at the time when it was still played but I believe it is pretty much dead now. Actually, that was my first online game I have ever played
Warcraft III I also played a bit, next to Star Trek: Armada II. I that it was very stable, rare to lag, no exploits that I really knew of, even though its just as old as a2. You can played as either the Undead, Human, Orc, or Nightelves. It is mostly a land-based RTS
Rise of nations I played the most, almost as much as I have played Armada 2. It based in this world, and you can start from the Ancient age with hoplites, slingsman, etc., all the way to the Information Age (present) with aircraft carriers, stealth bombers, and nuclear ICBM's, and so on. I always enjoyed ICBM's, anyone who knew me would make sure nukes were disabled if i was in the game or NOTHING will ever survive
In Rise of Nations most of the units were all the same for each race, but there were many races and each had special national bonuses and unique elite units. For Example: (The Germans have the power of Inudstry: They have many bonuses to all sections of industry and military production. They have many special units with heavy infantry during earlier ages, and tanks later on, such as the Tiger Tank) You also could build world wonders to get additional bonuses and benefits, and collect rare resources for same reason. This is a Land, Air, and Sea RTS.
Rise of Nations can have complex tactics, strategies, and builds, like A2, and possibly moreso then A2. Because of such a wide selection of races, and map styles, you have to be very adaptable to do well in this game. This game is not often modded so there is not many maps that are player-made. The only modding that is really done is scenarios for multiplayer and single player. This game is also doing well, it has approximatly 5x the amount of players that A2 has at one time, last time I looked. You usually find at least 10-15 players on at all times of the day, over 50 and sometimes 100 at other times. _________________ All warfare is based on deception. Actually, there is another Rise of Nations out called Rise of Legends... i think. It's basically the same concept but its on another planet in a fantasy world a little more into the future then our present day. I know very little about the game and haven't tried it yet though. _________________ All warfare is based on deception.
