Second shark bite on N.C. coast

NORTH TOPSAIL BEACH - A teenager was reportedly bitten today by a shark in the surf at North Topsail Beach, the second shark attack in two days, authorities said.
Major Doug Freeman of the North Topsail Beach Police Department said the 14-year-old swimmer was in knee-deep water about 12:30 p.m. when people on the beach saw large fish feeding near him.

They shouted for the youth to get out of the water, Freeman said, and he was bitten on the right calf as he fled.

The youth, who was not identified, was treated and released at Onslow County Memorial Hospital, a hospital spokesman said.

Freeman said local officials did not close the beaches because the incident appeared to be isolated and the result of the swimmer being near feeding fish.

The incident occurred about six miles from the high-rise bridge from the mainland to Topsail Island.

Freeman said the bite was attributed to a shark on the basis of witness accounts.

Officials in Atlantic Beach, about 40 miles north, said Tuesday a woman was bitten on the thigh and foot while in waist-deep water there. She was treated and released.
