Should I Laugh or Cry meaning
I'm absolutely in love with this song, but I can't seem to grasp the meaning of the song. Can anyone help?

I've always taken it to be about a relationship and the woman is at the end of her tether. You know when you are so exasperated with someone you don't know whether to laugh or cry? It's all metaphors. A huge favourite of mine, too. I love everything about it, Frida's vocal in particular.

I love that song too....i remember when buying the "one of us" single that I found "Should i laugh or cry" strong and very emotinal.

yeah I go with drimnagh..the person singing is "at the end of her latin"....

Great song.. one of my all-time faves.. I liked it better than the A-side, when it first came out.. I remember I had the single on a picture disc, ..but unfortunately, I've sold it in recent years  Still tho, ..Frida's vocals are superb..

Also, I interpret the song in my own way to mean a woman whose husband/partner is in denial (not just a river in Egypt ) and the 'balloon' reference could possibly be because she's about to burst HIS 'bubble' (balloon)... ''It's over for me..get out! And take that dog with you..(and your too-short stripey pyjamas)'' :rotfl:

How deep!

I just LOVE Frida's voice on this..

I first got this song on the UK compilation album Thank You For The Music in 1983. I don't think the One Of Us single was ever available in Iceland. I remember feeling this song was a bit strange, but when I got used to it I really liked it. I still think it is absolutely fantastic and I am really glad it was released and not just left on the shelf.

I think the lyrics are great. The woman has obviously fallen out of love and the man is quite oblivious to that:

Strange how
dangerously indifferent I have grown
cold as a stone
no more
pain where there was pain before
far away he rambles on
I feel my throat go dry
and I wonder should I laugh or cry

To me, it's a song about a doomed relationship that reaches that critical point of exasperation: the dreaded point at which one person ceases to respect the other - when angry words that once would cause pain are now only heard as sadly hilarious, with a calloused amusement.

I've been to that point, and it's very like the point of no return in a relationship.

What a great song!

Can't say that I have ever given this a lot of thought But I did read the above comments and would have to agree.

I've always figured it was about her realization that she is no longer in love with him. BUT, the question is, when she wonders if she should laugh or cry, for whom? Him, for being what she now envisions quite pathetic, or herself, for having put up with him and wasting her time?

I see it as a woman whose lover has turned into a nuisance and an egomaniac.

If you deal with such a person, you sometimes really don't know whether you should laugh  or cry  . LOL

I'd say BOTH, restareabear.

Or rather, SHE'LL be laughing when HE'S crying because she kicks him out!

Interesting, when I heard the meaning at first, I thought it was a woman thinking of a man changing greatly and she wonders if she should laugh or cry... I never thought of relationship problems...

 I'm no oracle- I simply grabbed the stick and ran with it- it could be about anything at all really.

Perhaps it's her brother and she's wondering whether to buy him some new jim jams for Christmas as the ones he's wearing have become too short.

At first, I too thought it was about a relationship. But then I had a new idea.

The man is her son, who's at the stage in his life where he forms strong political beliefs. The woman is pleased to an extent that her son is becoming more independent, but she disagrees with this new direction he's taking. He's "such a clever guy" after all, so she's disappointed he's using his smarts for a philosophy she disagrees with, or perhaps even finds dangerous.

It explains his apparent ranting; trousers are too short (because he's grown since); and ultimately, why laughing is an option.

This idea may or may not be inspired by the way I felt at the time my peers decided to consider rebellious and radical political movements...

How interesting! I always interpreted the "big balloon" as a metaphor for a huge speech bubble developing as he "rambles on".

Also, I once heard (though I forget in what context) that the song may be about some sort of mental breakdown like schizophrenia. Interesting, indeed, but I still go with the end-of-a-relationship notion.

Re: Should I Laugh or Cry meaning

ABBA-Frid - 05.03.2009, 00:00

I'm sorry, but I don't see a schizophrenic reference to the song ~ (Me And I, perhaps yes)

Like many who have posted here, I have always interpreted the song as the end of a relationship. Where she sees how ridiculous the relationship has become, she no longer loves or respects him and he is so egotistically ignorant to the fact, or is aware and just doesn't care. There are no emotional feelings left, very ironic. Fantastic vocal by our Frida.

I love the fact that this lyric was written by a man!
Frida may have joked on that recent interview in Berlin with her and Bjorn that "Bjorn and Benny might have taken out their feminie side" but that's exactly what Mr. Ulvaeus is doing here. He's putting himself in the position of a woman falling out of love with a man who she obviously once idolised and he tells the story beautifully form this point of view.
She no longer takes him seriously-perhaps another man waiting around the corner? You can add all sorts of intrique to it and I'm sure Phylidda Lloyd has got her claws into this one already! (Miaow!)

Bjorn was so good at putting himself into the female role towards the end of ABBA's era. And he always wore mre eyeliner than necessary on stage. Theories anyone?!
